These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-04-27,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 2, Round 7 - Arts & Literature - Comic Books

1. Mjolnir ("mule-near") is the weapon of what Marvel superhero?

2. Who was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics?
He is also the former king of Wakanda.

3. Name *any 2* of the 5 original X-Men (not including Prof. X).

4. Name *any* member of the original Alpha Flight.

5. Who is the Scarlet Witch's father?

6. Who is Nightcrawler's mother?

The remaining questions ask about *current* alter egos of
superheroes. Who is the alter ego of:

7. ...the Green Lantern?
8. ...Storm?
9. ...Hawkeye?
10. ...the Thing?

* Game 2, Round 8 - Science - Scientists and their Passports

Sure, you know their scientific achievements, but can you identify
their country of birth or nationality?

For questions #1-9, name the *present-day* country that includes
their place of birth.

1. Marie Curie, pioneer in the field of radioactivity.

2. William Osler, father of modern medicine.

3. Linus Torvalds, software engineer and chief architect of the
operating system Linux.

4. Nobel-winning physicist Niels Bohr, best known for his
contribution to quantum theory.

5. Ernest Rutherford, father of nuclear physics.

6. Edward Teller, father of the hydrogen bomb.

7. Carl Linnaeus, the botanist who is associated with the modern
biological naming scheme.

8. Gregor Mendel, founder of genetics.

9. Alexander Fleming, Nobel Prize winner best known for his
discovery of penicillin.

10. For Nikola Tesla, *either* answer the same question as above
*or* give his actual nationality at birth -- but you must say
which answer you are giving.

What a completely messy question! I suppose the quiz makers wanted to
cover the fact that Tesla was born in Croatia, but ethnically was Serb.
But in such case they should have asked for ethnicity, not "nationality
at birth" which would have to be the state to which his birthplace
belonged at the time, which is Austria. And not Hungary or Austria-Hungary.
The double monarchy was not established at his birth.

I knew he was Serbian, and sort of assumed that he was born in Belgrade,
in which case the nationality of birth would have been Ottoman Empire,
although, Serbia at the time had a level of autonomy.

Or did you misread the question?

Actually Tesla was born in 1856, so both of Calvin's guesses are impossible.

True. What I wanted say was that "nationality at birth" would refer to
the country of which he originally was a citizen. Not that this distinction
seems to matter in Tesla's case. In any case the answer seems to be
"Austrian" and not "Serbian", if that is what the quiz masters intended.
But it is certainly not clearcut, and it will be interesting to see
what the ruling will be - and what it was in the original quiz.

> 1. Mjolnir ("mule-near") is the weapon of what Marvel superhero?

Thor. 4 for Joshua, Dan Tilque, Björn, Dan Blum, Stephen, Gareth,
Marc, and Erland.

> He is also the former king of Wakanda.

Black Panther. 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Stephen, and Gareth.

> 3. Name *any 2* of the 5 original X-Men (not including Prof. X).

Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey). 4 for
Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Stephen (the hard way), and Gareth.

> 4. Name *any* member of the original Alpha Flight.

Aurora, Guardian (aka Weapon Alpha, Vindicator), Northstar, Sasquatch,
Shaman, Snowbird. 4 for Stephen (the hard way).

> 5. Who is the Scarlet Witch's father?

Magneto. 4 for Dan Blum, Stephen, and Gareth.

Stephen asserted that his own answer was wrong due to a retcon.
Dan Blum also wondered if his might be. According to Wikipedia,
there was a retcon some time this year and the answer is now Django
Maximoff. However on Marvel's own web site it says here

http://marvel.com/universe/Scarlet_Witch_%28Wanda_Maximoff%29

that Magneto is correct, and I'm taking that as definitive.
If their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing,
that's not my problem.

Hal Jordan. 4 for Dan Tilque, Gareth, and Erland.

This time it was Dan Tilque who asserted that his own answer was
wrong, and again Wikipedia seems to confirm this, but DC Comics'
own web site

http://www.dccomics.com/characters/green-lantern

confirms it as correct and I'm taking that as definitive.

Ororo Munroe. 4 for Stephen.

Clint Barton. 4 for Stephen and Gareth.

Benjamin Jacob Grimm. 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Stephen,

Czech Republic. I didn't know either.

No, Czechoslovakia is not a present-day country.

UK (accepting Scotland). 4 for Dan Tilque, Björn, Dan Blum, Stephen,
Gareth, and Erland. 3 for Joshua. 2 for Calvin.

> 10. For Nikola Tesla, *either* answer the same question as above

His birthplace is now in Croatia. As to nationality at birth,
I'm annoyed to find out that Erland's pre-complaint that this is
not clearly defined is valid -- at the time different groups within
the Austrian empire were declaring themselves to be "nations" and
demanding rights accordingly, so it depends on whether one accepts
their position. The originally expected answer was Serbian, but I'm
also accepting Austrian (but not "Austro-Hungarian"; that came later,
after the Austrians accepted the national claims from Hungary).

Only nobody gave either answer anyway. Those who got it right all
named the present-day country. So it's:

4 for Stephen and Marc. 3 for Joshua.

This is certainly correct, but I think my answer of Kate Bishop is also
correct - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkeye_(Kate_Bishop)
(Marvel's site seems kind of useless.)

No, I won't.

Yeah, but Hal's been coming and going ever since and is still active, I believe.

Having said that limiting ourselves to Sector 2814 we also have Guy Gardner as current GL and probably John Stewart (wasn't the last Inquisition about him?). Add in the rest of the Galaxy and we've got 3599 others to pick from. (My favourites were Kilowog and that one who looked like a squirrel).
