Arial, though similar, is not the same thing AFAIK.

"typeface" or
"font face".

Many answered Times New Roman which, as I pointed out, is correct for
Office 2003 and earlier, and you did not specify the version. Arial is
also a default font in Office 2003 for the Heading styles, so it could
be construed to be correct as well, although that would be to bend the
question a bit. But I would suggest that Times New Roman should be accepted.

He's got a point there. I have to use a Micros--t computer when I'm at
work, and I just double-clicked on the Word icon, which is Micros--t
Office Word 2003; and the font pulldown did indeed show Times New Roman.

Sure, but the question said "is", not "was". Times New Roman hasn't been
the default font face since 2003, ie three versions ago.

I don't think that's a reasonable interpretation of the question.

Your contest, your decision. But as I said, I double-clicked on the
Word icon in front of me and it said Times New Roman was the font.
That's "is".

I would agree here. The default font in Office 2003 still is Times New
Roman. Office 2003 did not self-destruct just because Office 2007 came out.
It would have been a different matter if Microsoft had sent out an update
through Windows Update that had changed the default font.

(And I can't absolutely not blame anyone who sticks to Office 2003. I'm
still not on terms with that ribbon.)
