These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-01-22,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 2, Round 2 - History - The Philippines

1. In 1521, what explorer claimed the Philippine Islands for the
Spanish crown?

2. For over two centuries the Philippines were administered as
part of which Spanish colony?

3. General MacArthur left the Philippines in May 1942 promising
to return. What was the name of the island, off Manila, that
he retreated from?

4. What was the name of the World War II death march that saw the
forced transfer of 60,000 to 80,000 Filipino and American
prisoners of war from the mouth of Manila Bay to a point about
100 km north? The march was characterized by severe physical
abuse and wanton killings, and was later judged by an Allied
military commission to be a Japanese war crime.

5. What is the name of the revolution that overthrew President
Ferdinand Marcos in 1986?

6. Who was the first woman to become the president of the
Philippines? She assumed power after the <answer 5>, her
senator husband having been assassinated 3 years earlier.

7. Apart from Vatican City, the Philippines is the only country
in the world not to have passed laws allowing this, and therefore
this act is not permitted. What act?

8. In office since 2016, who is the current president of the
Philippines?

9. This volcano in the Philippines was dormant for centuries until
1991, when it produced the second-largest volcanic eruption of
the 20th century. Name the volcano.

10. Imelda Marcos, wife of Ferdinand, was famous for the wealth,
and particularly the shoes she accumulated during her
husband's presidency. In 2010, she ran for country's House
of Representatives to replace her son, who was running for
a senate seat, and won. In 2016, she was re-elected to her
third and final term as Congresswoman. *What province* is
the district she represents located in?

* Game 2, Round 3 - Geography - Small Countries of Africa

tell us which number it is on the map:

4. Malawi.
