Rotating Quiz 254 is over. With Stephen Perry abstaining and Gareth
hiding in some unknown place despite the rock'n'roll questions, it
was a very tight race with six entrants within a margin of two points!
Two entrants were in a tie, but I ruled Calvin as the winner on the
grounds that Peter Smyth was way off on the canasta question. Calvin
was alone to miss the Gaijin question, but he had hedged with the correct
answer. And his addition on #9 was hilarous.
So Calvin, come on and set Rotating Quiz 0xFF at your liking! Here is
the full scoreboard:

Here are the answers:
> 1. The catalogue of which director includes titles such as "Women
> on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "All About My Mother"?
Pedro Almodóvar
Those are two very good films. The first his a hilarious comedy and
"All About My Mother" is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.
> 2. Dalia Grybauskaite is President of Lithuania. Is she married or
> not? Justify your answer!
She is not married. We can tell this from that her names ends with -aité.
Had she been married her last name would probably have been Grybauskiene
and her husband's last name would have been something like Grybauskas.
I see on Wikipedia that recent laws now permit Lithuanian women to use only
-e as the suffix if they wish not to disclose their martial status.
> 3. How did Sophie Chotek von Chotkova and Wognin die? Be sufficiently
> specific.
Shot by Gavralo Princip on June 28th 1914 in Sarajevo. Yes, she was the
wife of Franz Ferdinand.
> 4. The debut album of which iconic rocker included titles such as
> "Spirits in the Night" and "Blinded by the Light"?
Bruce Springsteen.
Both songs have been covered by Mannfred Mann's Earth Band, but on
different albums, of which none was the debut for the Earth Band and
even less for Mannfred Mann.
> 5. And, speaking of rock'n'roll, which classic rock group does
> potassium permanganate make you think of?
Deep Purple.
The crystals are indeed very purple to the colour.
> 6. How many cards in total are there in a game of canasta?
108.
Two full decks with jokers.
> 7. Joseph Kony is a true scumbag. Which organisation does he lead?
Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)
I gave partial credit for Children of the Lord's Army.
> 8. Easter Island belongs to which country?
Chile.
Almost all entrants got this one right. I will have to admit that before
that I started to read the guide book for Chile that I might have guessed
on one of the regular colonial suspects.
> 9. What does CONCACAF organise?
Football in North America (and the Carribean, as if that is not included
in North America. Surinam and Guyana also team up with CONCACAF.) And,
yes, as Calvin indicated, CONCACAF has been severely struck by
corruption.
> 10. In the company of strangers... In which country are you if someone
> calls out "Gaijin!" and means you?
Japan.
> 11. And among which people are you if you are being referred to as
> "gadjo"?
Gypsies.
> 12. Later this month, with the final on Saturday 13th, is the
> Eurovision Song Contest. In which city is ESC held this year?
Kiev.
Stockholm was last year. (I think. At least it was in Sweden.) The way
it works is that winning nation gets the honour to arrange it the next
year, just like a rotating quiz. Despite the name, it is not really
restricted to Europe anymore. Among the competing countries, you find
Australia.
> 13. And towards the end of the month, the 27th, starts what period that
> is important for many people on this planet?
Ramdan. Everyone knew this.
> 14. Reporters Without Borders recently published their World Press
> Freedom Index where they rank countries from best to worst with
> regards to the freedom of the press. Your task is to identify
> the top-ranked country for each continent. To make the question
> a little easier, for continents with many countries, I will permit
> you give any of the top countries as specified below:
Yes, this was difficult! Below I give the total list position in
parenthesis after the name.
> a) Europe (any of the top 3):
Norway (1), Sweden (2), Finland (3)
I feel sorry for the entrant who had Denmark(4).
> b) North America (any of the top 2):
Costa Rica (6), Jamaica (8)
No, I would not have figured that out myself. So Costa Rica was maybe
not a total surprise, but Jamaica? As for Canada, we will return to
that.
> c) Oceania (the top 1):
New Zealand (13)
The easy one.
> d) South America (the top 1):
Surinam (20)
Wow! Completely unexpected. Uruguay (25) and Chile (33) seemed like
reasonable guesses.
> e) Africa (any of the top 3):
Namibia (24), Ghana (26), Cabo Verde (27)
> f) Asia (any of the top 3):
Cyprus (30), Taiwan (45), South Korea (63)
You may recall from my similar question on Transperancy International's
ranking that Singapore ranked #5 that year. But when it comes to the
freedom of the press in Singapore, the situation is really bad. They are
on place 151.
> My definition of continents is strictly geographical. To save space,
> I don't detail them, but I will leave the hint that there are no
> trick answers here.
>
I made this comment with Cyprus in mind.
As for other "difficult" cases, I decided to ignore them to not make the
questions even more difficult, but had anyone been smart and entered a
country on a continent where is in the top, I would have approved of that.
Greenland has some autotonmy from Denmark, but then again Greenland
is not on the list of its own, so you could say that they are best in
North America.
Strictly geographcially, Iceland sits on the crack between the European
and North American plates, with the majority of the people living on
the North American side. Being #10 globally they still trail behind
Jamaica, but before Canada (22). I had already decided to only ask for
the top 2 when I made this realisation.
Portugal(18) is also a country that possibly crosses the plate barrier
in the Azores. More important is that the island of a Madeira, an
integral part of Portugal, is definitely in Africa, so it could be
said to be the top country in Africa.
What about France then? France has departements and territories in about
every continent - except in Asia which is the only place where it can
compete with its position as #39.
Spain(29) has several African outliers, but it still trails behind
Cabo Verde.
