On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information see
my 2011-05-23 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI5GNM, QFTCI11, QFTCIMM)".
I did not write either of these rounds.
* Game 6, Round 2 - NHL Deals and Steals
1. We begin as usual with current events. Or to be more precise,
the first *two* questions in this round will be about a
very recent deal. Name the 6'5", 216-pound prospect that
the Leafs acquired from Boston as part of the package in
return for Tomas Kaberle ("KAB-er-lay").
2. Toronto also received a 2011 first-round draft pick, and
another draft pick that will only apply if one of two things
happens this year. Name *either* of the two conditions.
3. Montreal traded what goaltender to St. Louis in June of 2010,
despite his sparkling play in upsetting Washington and
Pittburgh in that year's playoffs?
4. In another puzzling move, Chicago let this goaltender go to
San Jose after winning the 2009-10 Stanley Cup. Name him.
5. Colorado acquired two veteran defensemen in 2000 and 2001.
Neither of them was Rodney Boyd, but they both shared his
first and last initials. Name either one.
6. Comparing the 2009 end-of-year standings to 2010, what team
went from first to worst in the NHL after signing Ilya
Kovalchuk to a $100 million contract?
7. A lopsided deal in 1986 saw Vancouver receive Barry Pederson,
while Boston got a 1987 first-round draft pick -- along with
what future Hall-of-Fame forward?
8. In another lopsided deal, in 1988 St. Louis swapped Rob
Ramage and Rick Wamsley to Calgary for Steve Bozek -- and
what future Hall-of-Fame forward?
9. In US dollars, within 20% of the true number, how much cash
did Oilers owner Peter Pocklington acquire from Los Angeles
as part of the Wayne Gretzky trade?
10. Speaking of <answer 9>, that's also the amount that went
to Quebec City, along with a slew of players and draft picks,
when Philadelphia acquired what center in 1992?
After completing the round, please decode the rot13: Vs lbh nafjrerq
"Uhyy" on any question, go back and supply the first name.
* Game 6, Round 3 - Literary Techniques
For each of the following passages, identify the literary device or
figure of speech used in it. We'll tell you that answers will not
repeat, and since pretty much anything could be said ironically, none
of the answers will be "irony".
1. "The kettle is boiling."
2. "All hands on deck!"
3. "If only I had known then the reason for Sir Lechly's
penetrating look, I would have left the castle immediately."
4. "Good grief, Godfrey, get that greyhound out of my gloxinia
garden!"
5. "I yanked the door open and the hinges squealed in protest."
6. "It's *hot* and it's mo*not*onous."
7. "The rain pattered down and the worms squished under my
boots as thunder began to rumble."
8. "This round is as stale as week-old toast."
9. "You're an angel, darling."
10. "Just then a complete stranger entered. 'I confess,
Inspector Hodge,' he said. 'I killed Lord Blenkinsop.
Please pardon me for omitting to appear in this story up
until now."

Joe Colborne. 4 for Stephen.

Boston reaches the Stanley Cup final (which they did, winning it);
Kaberle re-signs with Boston for next season (which he didn't,

> For each of the following passages, identify the literary device or

This was the worst-designed round of the season, as we did not give
nearly enough consideration to the possibility of questions having
alternative answers other than "irony". One entrant who noticed
this asked what source the round's author used; I replied, "I think
it was 'I used to be an English teacher, so I know this stuff.'"
The trouble was, when the team reviewed it, *we* mostly knew the
expected answers or nothing.
To properly address the problems would have required a complete
rewrite, so I decided to just post the questions here "as is" and
accept a lot of alternate answers that came up on protests or that
otherwise seem sensible. But I'm not accepting grammatical terms
like "statement" or "exclamation"; the round is about literary
techniques.
> 1. "The kettle is boiling."
Metonymy. We accepted the vivid present on a protest. 4 for Joshua,
Stephen, and Dan Tilque.
> 2. "All hands on deck!"
Synecdoche. Sorry, no bonus points for correct spelling. I'm also
accepting metonymy, although it's not quite the same thing.
4 for Joshua, Stephen, Jeff, Dan Tilque, and Dan Blum.
> 3. "If only I had known then the reason for Sir Lechly's
> penetrating look, I would have left the castle immediately."
Foreshadowing. We accepted hindsight on a protest, although it's
not exactly a literary device, but "perception" is too vague. I am
accepting hyperbole, as statements like this are often exaggerated.
4 for Marc.
> 4. "Good grief, Godfrey, get that greyhound out of my gloxinia
> garden!"
Alliteration. 4 for everyone -- Joshua, Stephen, Marc, Jeff, Peter,
Calvin, Pete, Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, and Rob.
> 5. "I yanked the door open and the hinges squealed in protest."
Personification. On protests we accepted onomatopoeia (this being
the etymological origin of "squealed") and anthropomorphism, and I'm
also accepting imagery. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Marc, Jeff, Peter,
Calvin, Pete, Dan Tilque, and Dan Blum.
> 6. "It's *hot* and it's mo*not*onous."
Assonance or internal rhyme. Since I'm generally being generous
in this round, I'm accepting plain "rhyme". 4 for Joshua, Stephen,
Marc, Peter, Calvin, Dan Tilque, and Dan Blum.
> 7. "The rain pattered down and the worms squished under my
> boots as thunder began to rumble."
Onomatopoeia. I'm also accepting dramatic visualization.
4 for Joshua, Stephen, Marc, Peter, Calvin, Dan Blum, and Rob.
> 8. "This round is as stale as week-old toast."
Simile. We also accepted metaphor on a protest. Apparently some
authorities define it in a way that includes simile, although none
of the dictionaries we checked (including the OED) do. 4 for Joshua,
Marc, Jeff, Peter, Calvin, Pete, Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, and Rob.
> 9. "You're an angel, darling."
Metaphor. We also accepted hyperbole on a protest, darling.
4 for Stephen, Marc, Peter, Calvin, Dan Blum, and Rob.
> 10. "Just then a complete stranger entered. 'I confess,
> Inspector Hodge,' he said. 'I killed Lord Blenkinsop.
> Please pardon me for omitting to appear in this story up
> until now."
Deus ex machina. We also accepted twist ending on a protest, and
I'm accepting "satire" (because of how it's written), "breaking
the fourth wall" (which is normally more of a stage/film/TV term),
and "revelation" (although it's not exactly a literary technique).
4 for Stephen, Peter, Calvin, Pete, Dan Tilque, and Rob.

how is my answer of "they finish first" not what happened? I understand that reaching the final game and winning it are not the same, but I thought I was 'close enough' with my answer.

Stephen Perry:
> how is my answer of "they finish first" not what happened?
That would refer to the regular season, not the playoffs. In fact
Boston did finish first in the Northeast Division, but only third
in the Eastern Conference, which are the more relevant level of
standings -- but in any case that has nothing to do with the trade
agreement.

apparently what I meant and what you interpreted it to mean were not the same thing. that's the problem with this medium, where subtlety, nuance and intent are often lost. ah well.

Well, that's apparently because what you said and what you meant were
not the same thing.
And even if this was the Olympics or a knockout tournament in bridge,
where winning the finals *is* equated to finishing first, your answer
would still be wrong, because the criterion was that they made the
finals, not won it.
> that's the problem with this medium, where subtlety, nuance

That's often true.
