These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and refer to current events of approximately one
week preceding those dates. They should be interpreted accordingly;
if it matters, you are expected to give the answers that were
then correct.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information see
my November 25 companion posting on "Cellar Rats Questions from
the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCICR)".

All questions were written by members of the Cellar Rats team and
are used here by permission, but have been retyped and may have
been edited by me.

* Game 7 (played 2009-11-16) - Round 1 - Current Events

1. Last Sunday, what arrived by plane in Alert, Nunavut, the
northernmost permanent settlement in the world?

2. The 20th anniversary celebrations of this event last week
included the symbolic toppling of 1,000 giant foam dominoes
made by students. What was it the anniversary of?

3. This American murderer, who with an accomplice engaged
in a 2002 killing spree that left 10 dead and 3 wounded,
was executed by lethal injection last Tuesday. What was
his name or how was he referred to in the press?

4. Ontario's deputy premier announced last Monday that he was
leaving provincial politics to do what?

5. What important discovery was announced by NASA on Friday?

6. The CBC last week reported on (and offered a retort to)
satirical talk show host Stephen Colbert putting us "Canadian
iceholes" "on notice" for what alleged mistreatment of the
US speed skating team?

7. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit that
began on the weekend is focusing on economic and environmental
issues. Where is it being held?

8. This past Saturday was World <answer 8> Day, observed every
November 14 to promote awareness of which disease?

9. Which trouble-prone American sports figure ran afoul of
the law again last week when he assaulted a cameraman at
the L.A. airport, drawing blood and leaving a nasty gash
with a single punch to the forehead?

10. A Canadian couple was in the news last week for winning
one of the largest lottery jackpots in Canadian history.
Name either the family or the province they live in.

* Game 8 (played 2009-11-23) - Round 1 - Current Events

1. US Attorney-General Eric Holder has announced that the man
accused of masterminding the 9/11 attacks will be tried by
jury in New York City. What is his name? (We need more
than just the surname.)

2. Patrick Kennedy, son of Ted and a member of the US House
of Representatives, was this week barred -- in response to
his political activities -- from doing what?

3. The web site virtualtourist.com this week released its list
of the world's ugliest buildings. What Toronto location
made the list at #8?

4. "New Moon" broke "The Dark Knight"'s record for the most
successful opening day ever. Within $5,000,000, how much
money did it make last Friday?

5. Name the Canadian university professor who made headlines
this week by denouncing Michael Ignatieff on Facebook,
or her famous husband.

6. Astronaut Randy Bresnik, working on the International Space
Station this week, was awaiting what news from Earth?

7. Proctor & Gamble recalled 120,000 bottles of what, after
bacteria was discovered during routine testing? (Type of
product is sufficient.)

8. Police on Long Island had to shut down an appearance by
a Canadian pop idol after thousands of girls showed up and
went wild. Name the 15-year-old singer whose new CD was,
according to HMV, the top seller in Canada last week.

9. About 300 homes had to be evacuated in Western Canada
last Friday due to flooding. Where did the evacuation occur?
(Town or general locality, more specific than a province.)

10. The US Preventive Services Task Force caused controversy
this week with a recommendation that women not begin taking
regular mammograms until they reach what age?

Interesting range of guesses. I'm tempted to score one of them as
almost correct so you get penalized for making the other.

I'm impressed. In Toronto we've set an all-time record this year
(where "all-time" means "since 1847") for latest first snowfall of
the winter -- we haven't had it yet. (Probably any day now.)

entered from the hotel in Kissimmee, FL before packing for the
airport. the kids were thankfully asleep already. after seeing the
world showcase at epcot, and the nice fireworks and laser show at the
end of the evening, it was a struggle to get the wife and kids settled
in. yeah, I know I said it would be 168 hours before they calmed
down, but I had hope they would succumb to exhaustion. it almost
worked, they succeeded in exhausting me. the answer was clearly a
sign that my train of thought was still boarding at the station.

I have friends who live down that way, they took pictures of
themselves and the kids making snowmen and using makeshift sleds
created from what looks like the remains of garbage cans and
refrigerator boxes. for many of them, it was their first actual
encounter with snow.

I am typing this from the MCO airport where the sun is peeking out for
the first time in days. It brings to mind a puzzle, but I'll start
another thread for that.

And this past afternoon:

Apparently I was mistaken -- I didn't see it or hear about it, but
today's news indicated that there was a trace of snow on December 1.
This was still an all-time record. This ends the weather-reporting
subthread.
