These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and refer to current events of approximately one
week preceding those dates. They should be interpreted accordingly;
if it matters, you are expected to give the answers that were
then correct.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information see
my November 25 companion posting on "Cellar Rats Questions from
the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCICR)".

All questions were written by members of the Cellar Rats team and
are used here by permission, but have been retyped and may have
been edited by me. This posting completes the current events
series; next I will start with regular rounds from Game 1.

* Game 9, Round 1 - Current Events (played 2009-11-30)

1. A shortage of supply of what Kellogg product is occurring
in the US, due to flooding and plant renovation?

2. What 1970s band, with plans to release their first album in
20 years, played a 2-night stand at the Phoenix last week?

3. A parody of Sarah Palin's recent book was released on the
same day and has a similar title. What title? Include the
subtitle for full points.

4. 2,300 people attended a sold-out speaking engagement at Roy
Thomson Hall by what chef?

5. Who is suing Rogers to force it to abandon its longstanding
claims to have the "fastest" and "most reliable" wireless
network?

6. Who won the 37th annual American Music Awards Artist of the
Year and four other awards?

7. Two hockey dads invented a product to combat foul-smelling
hockey bags. What did they call it?

8. Chaos erupted when Toronto realtors lined up for the
first-come-first-serve sale of condo units in what project,
to be built over the next 5 years?

9. Six SUVs, all of the same make and model, were stolen on
the same night in the Davisville area. Name the make
and model.

10. Thousands of Toronto Muslims attended a celebration of Eid
Al-Adha at the CNE on Friday. What was being celebrated?

* Game 10, Round 1 - Current Events (played 2009-12-07)

1. On Tuesday, what caused the evacuation of three federal
office buildings in Gatineau, QC?

2. December 3 was the anniversary of what major environmental
disaster?

3. Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk landed back on Earth Tuesday
after spending a record-breaking amount of time on the
International Space Station. How long?

4. The infamous adultery web site ashleymadison.com this week
offered a $5,000,000 endorsement deal to which celebrity?

5. Which actress came out as a lesbian on the "Today" show
this week?

6. This week Italian police crashed their most expensive patrol
car, damaging it beyond repair. (Either it was clipped by
a moving car or swerved to avoid it -- reports vary -- and
then it crashed into parked cars.) The car was outfitted
with gun mounts and the latest in electronics. But why else
was it their most expensive car?

7. On November 30, Loblaws announced a joint venture to renovate
and refurbish Maple Leaf Gardens. One partner is the
federal government. Name the other major partner.

8. Google announced on Tuesday that it would allow publishers
of paid content to make a change to the way users can access
web sites. What is the main aspect of that change?

9. When the mayor of Regina lost his Grey Cup bet to his Montreal
counterpart, he was required to do three things. One was
to wear an Alouette jersey. Name either of the other two.

10. Google announced its "fastest rising searches in Canada" and
"fastest rising news searches in Canada" this week. Name any
of the top three celebrities on the list.

11 fans of The Who were killed and dozens more injured in a crush of
people trying to get into the riverfront coliseum in cincinnati, ohio
when thousands of fans with festival seating tickets rushed towards
the locked doors when they mistook the sound check for the concert
having started; the bhophal chemical accident also occurred on the
same day in india, but less people paid attention to that

I've submitted my answers, so now I'm browsing the others, and I have a

And Stephen Perry wins the current events game. Well done! Now
we will do regular questions for the season, starting next with
Game 1, Rounds 2-3.

Eggos. 4 for Dan and Stephen.

Devo. 4 for Stephen.

"Going Rouge: Sarah Palin: An American Nightmare". (Palin's book

3 for Dan.

Jamie Oliver. 2 for Boot.

X2.

Toyota Highlander.

> 10. Thousands of Toronto Muslims attended a celebration of Eid

The festival celebrates the offer by Ibrahim (or Abraham) to sacrifice
his son to God (who settled for an animal instead). I accepted any
reference to sacrifice. 4 for Stephen and Joshua.

> * Game 10, Round 1 - Current Events (played 2009-12-07)

(Freon) gas leak.

Bhopal disaster. 4 for Marc, Pete, Boot, and Peter. 2 for Stephen
and Rob.

> 3. Canadian astronaut Bob Thirsk landed back on Earth Tuesday

186 days. It's only a Canadian record. The expected answer as given
at the game was "6 months", so I'm allowing a half-month's leeway and
accepting 171-201 days for people who answered in days. 4 for Pete,
Peter, and Stephen.

> 4. The infamous adultery web site ashleymadison.com this week

It was a Lamborghini. 4 for Boot, Peter, and Stephen. 3 for Joshua.

Ryerson University. It is indeed the university nearest to MLG,
but I still did not accept "the local university" as close enough.

> 8. Google announced on Tuesday that it would allow publishers

The number of free articles available to a user from one web site
will be limited. 4 for Peter.

> 9. When the mayor of Regina lost his Grey Cup bet to his Montreal

Fly the Alouettes' team flag at City Hall; buy two Alouettes season
tickets and donate them to charity.

Justin Bieber (he came up in the last set, remember?), Susan Boyle,
Natasha Richardson.

I don't get it. Natasha Richardson died in March and Susan Boyle's
moment of fame came in May. Why are these searches "rising" in
December?

I (Mark Brader) posted a Cellar Rats question:

>> Justin Bieber (he came up in the last set, remember?), Susan Boyle,

Marc Dashevsky:

> I don't get it. Natasha Richardson died in March

That one puzzled me too, but a Google News search gives the answer:
the story is back in the news because of statements by her sister
Joely Richardson.

> and Susan Boyle's moment of fame came in May.

Her first one. She's now capitalized on it by releasing an album.
