This week's Quiz Quilt title undoubtedly appeared several times as a
onscreen exclamation on the early 1980s show "That's Incredible!".
ABC's answer to NBC's "Real People" featured a wide variety of mostly
human stunts, some worthy of "Guinness Book of World Records"
recognition, others more fitting for David Letterman's "Stupid
Human Tricks".

Dunno. ACE?

Okay, I don't get the incredible bit, but VIOLET is on the upward
diagonal. So VOLLEY for #6, and NESBITT is a name that fits #1.

No idea, but the 6th letter is T. Is there somebody named LEGGETT?
I'll guess that.

I thought I knew all the people who could have said this, but all I
can say is that the 2nd letter is an I. Maybe it's NIXON (Richard), so
I'll take a shot at that.

Robert Jen:

>> What animal does the Milky Way constellation Aquila represent?

Bill Daly:

> EAGLE (Aren't all the constellations in the Milky Way?)

Depends on what you mean by "constellation" and by "Milky Way".

"Milky Way" can mean the galaxy (a word itself derived from the Greek
for "milk") we are located in, but it can also mean the band of light,
visible when the sky is dark enough, where we are looking more or
less edge-on along the central plane of the galaxy.

"Constellation" can mean a group of stars visible in the same part of
the sky, but it can also just mean the part of the sky containing
those stars (astronomers have officially divided the whole sky
into 88 constellations with definite boundary lines between them).
Since you can see an indefinite distance into space, a "constellation"
in this usage is better thought of as a direction, from the Sun,
in 3-dimensional space.

If you use the first sense of "Milky Way" and the first sense of
"constellation", then you're right, all constellations are in the
Milky Way -- no individual stars farther away than that are bright
enough to see at all (except for supernovas in the Magellanic
Clouds, like SN 1987A).

But if you use the second sense of "Milky Way" and the second sense
of "constellation", then it does make sense to call Aquila a Milky
Way constallation, because part of the Milky Way in that sense runs
through that section of the sky.

On the other hand, it's really the constellations in the first sense
that "represent" things.

Incorrect (although it's an uncommon last name, there are producers
named Leggett, but not this one; right last three letters though).

Correct, correct, and incorrect. When you said "Elastic Girl", I
thought you were referring to "Elastigirl", who was played by Holly
HUNTER in the 2004 movie "The Incredibles". Violet was Elastigirl's
daughter and was played by Sarah VOWELL (I consider both HUNTER and
VOWELL too difficult/obscure in this context for quilt solutions).
