Repost of sports trivia question...no right answers yet.

What was the Anthony Carter rule in the USFL??

Guesses so far dealt with tearaway jerseys and territorial draft rights, but
were incorrect.

First to post correct answer gets the pride that goes with knowing that you
were first to post ghe correct answer!!

I'll give it one more shot...
Didn't it have to do with the jersey numbers? He was allowed to wear
number 1 on his jersey even though that number was normally reserved
for placekickers.

Absolutely correct!  The USFL assigned groups of numbers to various
positions...I think the 80's were reserved for wide receivers...but
Anthony Carter said if they didn't let him wear his # 1 from college he
wouldn't play in their league.  SInce they thought he would be a big
drawing card playing for the Michigan Panthers after having gone to
college in Michigan they decided to save face by allowing each team to
have one player be allowed to wear any number they wanted, as long as
everyone else conformed...hence...the Anthony Carter rule!!
