Tucker should never be allowed to work in the gaming industry again. His Work
BLOWS.

I'm sure he doesn't get to pick what he does or how he does it. You should
complain about the company publishing it.

Then don't buy it or look at it.

This is the same "CptKaso" who was mindlessly trying to
start arguments over Netrunner a few weeks back. He's a troll.
Responding just makes him happy.

Actually, I think Drew's art is an acquired taste. He does have
skill, but perhaps his style isn't popular. They have said similar
things about many of the better known artists of this world:
Picasso, Van Gogh, etc.
Not to compare Drew to these artists, but perhaps our perspectives are
all different. (Imagine that!)
I would prefer to say, "Drew is not an artist I a like. I don't like
his style, and, in my opinion, he makes the scene incomprehensible."
To which I would say, "That is a valid opinion, but not one that I
share." And everyone's happy!

*SIGH*
And here I am replying to what's an obvious attempt to start a flame war...
You may not like Drew Tucker's art. I may even see how you may not
like it; his style is very personal, and not in the style of recent
trends in, say, Magic art: very descriptive; if the card title has the
word "Goblin", most likely it will show something that is very easily
identified as a goblin.
I happen to like Drew Tucker's art. It leaves much more to the
imagination.
There are other artists whose work I don't like. But then, I don't
feel an urge to post attacks against them on Usenet...

Well, IMHO, one should be a little more specific than "it blows" if one is
going to get that nasty. Why, exactly, does it blow?
Personally, I'm a Tucker fan and think his work is some of the most truly
expressive around.

Besides the fact that appreciation of art is obviously a matter of
taste, the fact that Quinton Hoover made it a point to disagree on this
matter should really give you some sort of clue...
If you think Mr. Hoover is blind, you should go to the link he left in
his message (to his homepage), and check out some of his art.
Personally, Drew Tucker's art isn't really my favourite. But I do
appreciate the skill in it, and, unlike some of the more photo-realistic
"art," it invokes an emotion in me (I agree with Mr. Hoover that it is
some of the most expressive around). I also like variety, and Mr.
Tucker certainly doesn't fit into the mold of the common CCG artist.
While flaming on USENET can be fun, you should really use some
intelligence, as it makes posts interesting rather than just sickening.
If you have no intelligence to use (probable, from your posts), then
just steal other people's thoughts and put your name on them. We'll all
thank you.

Heh...I really don't mind people not liking an artist's work, including my own.
Truthfully, I'd be offended if everyone liked what I do. I just hate it when
someone just says something foolish like I Sucks. If you wanna define why,
that's cool, but remember, it's art, but it's also a job--I wouldn't go into
McDonalds and tell the frycook he's flipping the hamburgurs wrong unless I
could offer an idea of how he might flip them better...
That isn't a good analogy. Art is art; flipping burgers is a method. As
such, the latter can be objectively criticised, requiring a suggestion for
improvement to be honest criticism. Art can only be subjectively criticised.
I don't need to know how to make a movie to tell if a movie is good or bad. I
don't need to know how to paint to criticise a painting.
And I really like Drew Tucker's art; I like yours for different reasons.
Tucker's is moody and complex; yours is clean and shows good colour sense. I
think Tucker's compositional skills are better; I think your characterisation
is better.
I don't need to know how to paint to make these subjective criticisms, and
they are just as honest as the criticism of someone who says "Drew Tucker's
art sucks".

Well, no, it's more honest--you gave a reason why you liked or disliked
something. "It sucks" is useless to the artist and the viewing audience. What
the hell can either learn from it? I don't always agree with my detractors,
but when I do I appreciate it if they can point out something that I may have
missed. It's difficult at times for me, as an artist, to see beyond the
technique, so if a person can point out a flaw to me so that I can see what it
is that's wrong, I truly appreciate that--even in the event the person hates
the particular piece of work.
The greatest appeal for me with Drew's work is that it is exactly the opposite
of my own--there's a freedom of expression in it my anal-retentiveness won't
allow me to capture in my own work, and I'm envious of his ability in this
regard.
I would like to chip in my 2 cents. Mr Hoover I have always liked
your work because it is candy for the eye, visually compelling, the
medium is the message. I have always liked Mr. Tucker's work because
his message seems to come from a dream state, it comes around a corner
and behind me. I know he is saying something but the rational part of
how I view the world doesn't get. I like that.
Greg
Yeah--Drew's art is cool because it hits you on a purely emotional level. He's
one of the few artists working in this field that doesn't make me deconstruct
his technique.
