I agree that alot of the new artists are pretty good. DiTerlizzi was my
favorite up until Anson came back. About your not liking Anson's pictures,
he the BEST! Alot of his stuff is abstract, but there are alot fewer of his
pictures I don't like than any other artists. Besides, look at Null Rod in
Weatherlight. No where near as abstract as his older stuff like Maze of
Ith etc... Seems likely he's been doing some more realistic stuff in the
interim.
But some people just don't have any "realism" like Quinton Hoover, and the
Foglios.
Don't send me any death threats, I mean it's just my opinion.
So what if there's no realism in their art? The Foglios [Phil, at
least, I don't know about Kaja] do comic books and generally go for humor.
[look at the original Imposing Visage or Apathy, for example] They *can*
do serious and realistic work [well, as realistic as you can get in a game
where realism doesn't exist!] - look at Phil's Killer Bees or Kaja's
Sorcerous Queen.
Quinton Hoover is also a comic book artist, as far as I know [if you see
this, please correct me if I'm wrong!], and his style is quite normal for
the black & white scene [lines all clearly defined andrigid, for example,
like on Regeneration or Vesuvan Doppleganger, lots of angularity]
Drew Tucker is one 'non-realistic' artist you didn't mention, which
suprised me. His methods are best for the unwholesome and icky things
that grow in the dark, like Necrite and Night Soil. He should definately
stay away from lighter subject matter - his Hurr Jackal isn't very good,
and should stay with doing cards for Black or the darker side of Green...

Yeah, I like Anson's art. Avon and Giancola are awesome, but they
can't top my favorite AD&D-turned-MtG-artist, Brom. BROM RULES!
I like a mix of realism and abstract (but not Drew Tucker abstract).
I also like the Foglios. Their art is very stylized.
But Chris Rush is still my favorite artist.
Also, while we're on the subject or art, does anyone agree with me in
thinking that actual Photographs don't belong on Magic cards (and yes,
I am referring to Cliff Nielsen!)?

I love the Foglios artwork. :)
I know this is probably against the rules replying on your own post but
what the hell. I love foglio's work it brings humor to the game I think
personaly Quinton Hoover is amazing and Richard Kane Ferguson is cool to
with all the funky lines and Avon and Detrellzi <spelling> and Rush are
amazing but I still dislike most of Maddock's work some of the newer
stuff is ok and about Tucker he has some good cards they are few and far
bettween and I can't remember the names but it is ok

I despise Ferguson's artwork. His "new" WL artwork only reassures my
belief that he sneezed on a canvas and shaped it into something
recognizable. Is it just me, or are Dissipate, Boomerang, Arcane
Denial, and Flux all the same picture?
Definitely have to agree that RKF's one of the better artists.
Dakkon, and Arcane are some of the best pictures I've seen around.
He and Anson Maddocks.
'nuff said.

I have to disagree; RKF is going downhill in a hurry. I love
Dakkon and the Swamp King, but a lot of his recent work is nearly
undecipherable when shrunk down to 2" by 2". Flux, Recall, Boomerang,
Animate Wall and several others are just masses of color without meaning.
Of the new artists, D. Alexander Gregory and Donato Giancola are
my personal favorites, Giancola especially. His work at drawing hands is
really first rate, especially Sisay's Rings and Crystal Rod.
My two cents,

Personally, I liked Kaja's work in Jyhad/V:tES. Their magic artwork was a
bit silly for my personal tastes, but I can understand/tolerate other's
appreciation of silliness.
It's just not for me, though; this stupid iron rod someone shoved up my
ass at birth to replace my spine doesn't permit it ;)

Yet again, I am at odds with the majority opinion....
I like the new art insofar as they have got rid of the really crappy
artwork. Thank god the old Counterspell is gone, for instance. However, I
think they have gone too far. A card like Remedy is as annoying as
Counterspell was, or Flight. And, in the old sets, the artists were
allowed more freedom to be experimental; I _love_ cards like Holy Light,
and Kaja Folgio's cartoonish arts. The less realistic art, the less
representative pics, had more character, more of a "mood."
Personally, I'd like to see a mix: realistic art, and more
impressionistic, non-representational art. Of course, I don't expect most
people to be on my side, to agree. Most people prefer realistic,
representational art; it's been that way since non-representational art
started to appear in galleries in the 19th century....
: (if you have no idea what iam talking about this is what happened: WOTC
: said they would no longer pay royalties to artists so the artists left

Yeah, you would forget them, wouldn't you. The artists who help make
Magic....
When those artists left, there were predictions by the old crew that the
new art would become dull and soulless -- especially with the strict
guidelines etc. they give artists these days. Guess what? One the whole, I
agree. The cards may look more like photographs now, but, gee, they aren't
quite as fun to look at as they used to be... sigh... But, of course,
everyone who plays Magic seems to buy into the whole newer-is-better
philosophy; it's either the new stuff kicks butt, blindly accepting
whatever WotC does, or people whining about any little change, about every
card being banned, format changes etc etc. Not a lof of thoughtful
discussion amongst Magic players, is there? Maybe you are all geeks after
all.....
I love Tedin, he's a sick, twisted, morbid bastard, right up my alley.
: But some people just don't have any "realism" like Quinton Hoover, and the

Here I disagree... the lack of realism is what makes these artists cool.
Kaja's art just gets better and better... The colours!!! When I got my
Suleiman's Legacy from a VS booster, my thought was, "Wow! Cool colours.
This is a _pretty_ card." And, with the nifty colours, the cool swirly
design, all framed by the gold borders -- it's an awesome-looking card.
Maybe you think I'm silly.... I dunno...

Death to you!!! <g>

Pretty much....
Actually, I like RKF the first couple of cards I saw. Then I realised
they are _ALL_blue swirls with some red firey stuff thrown in for contrast
or something. It was cool once, fine twice, tired as hell 5 times later. I
was thinking about RKF just the other day, actually.... I guess I have too
much time on my hands....

I agree with you, here. A photorealistic picture of a human being
in some boring pose may be a good picture, but it isn't good art. I value
experimentation and imagination in artwork. And on that basis, I have
been sorely disappointed by the art in Mirage, Visions, and 4E. Yuck.
Weatherlight art is pretty good, though, even by my standards. There
are some great non-humanoid creatures (Bogarden Firefiend, Abyssal Gatekeeper
and Hidden Horror are my favorites), some well-done action sequences
(Goblin Genadiers, Desperate Gambit, and Aboroth spring to mind) and some
neat impressionistic experimentation (Odylic Wraith and Mind Stone are
successes, IMHO; Dwarven Thaumaturgist and Boiling Blood are failures. <:) )
Seems as though the art team found a good balance between their creative
side and their assigned topics.
Setting followups to this thread to *.misc, as this isn't strategy
discussion... :)

I like Terese and Cliff Nielsen...... they look like photographs ( maybe
they are??) I don't think they sneezed on the canvas/photographs...and even
if they did ...I'm SURE they did't shaped it (gross :) ) !!! Could be
wrong there though.... :) And no you're not the only one Ryan...they
look the same to me too .... but thats what makes them artists special
...so I would'nt fault them on that ......... :)
