... and before anyone wonders why I'm not pouncing, there's no reason to.
This is legitimate use of .misc - the item is related to Magic but not
related to play, and has no other appropriate group in the hierarchy.

Could we, just for once, die without all this bickering?
Well, yes, but isn't it still an auction? The FAQ that posted here
states, "Sales, auctions and trades are absolutely forbidden on this
newsgroup." Is this exempt because it isn't about singles or boosters,
but is art instead? The FAQ doesn't make that very clear.

Yes, though if it wasn't a Magic-related piece of art it would of course
still be spam.
This being the rec.games.trading-cards.* hierarchy, the things that should
be sold in the marketplace groups are items required to play the game -
cards and other paraphernalia. Those things should not be sold here.
However, selling things like original art, graphics kits, store displays (by
which I mean the likes of mobiles and silk screens, not display boxes) and
books is fair use because it's not really what the marketplace groups are
meant for.
Whilst I wholeheartedly disagree with your normal methods, this
exception seems based on a whim. The FAQ is quite clear:
"FAQ (no trades/sales/auctions here)"
and again:
"*** 1.2 What is not allowed ***
Post with HTML-controls and/or attachments (even plain-text
attachments) are not allowed.
Sales, auctions and trades are absolutely forbidden on this newsgroup,
and a 'zero-tolerance' policy is maintained. Don't post any
advertisement for sales/trades/auctions here!"
Nowhere does it say "we'll let people off if it's art".
rec.games.trading-cards.marketplace.misc seems an entirely appropriate
place for Graham to post his auction.
Why the double standard? Fan of original Magic art?

The FAQ also doesn't include the standard Usenet rule of "misc groups are
for things that belong in the hierarchy but don't specifically fit
elsewhere".
IMO, it fits better in here than in marketplace.misc; those groups are meant
for selling game-related stuff, and their misc group is meant for selling
stuff related to games that don't have their own marketplace and discussing
selling issues that aren't directly related to STAs. rgt-cmm is for Magic
stuff that isn't game related, in which I would include art. A friend of
mine has collected a set of Mirrodin-block silkscreens, which I'd say was
about as misc as you can get.
> Why the double standard? Fan of original Magic art?
Not really, though I do have the original draft of the Arena Disenchant. :)
It's not likely to come up all that often anyway, but I think the yardstick
should be "is it interesting?" So, straw poll: which of the following are
interesting enough to be sold here?
Original card art
Artists' proof cards
Pro Tour/Worlds Competitor T-shirts
Other competitor-only items (lanyards, playmats etc.)
Other non-card promo items (lanyards, fridge poetry, sew-on patches etc.)
Pre-release banners and mobiles
Store posters and silkscreens
I'd say that all of these were fair game because they're unusual, rare
(often less than 500 existing) and hard to get hold of. What follows I'm
dubious about, but vote on them anyway.
Official artists' art prints
Original Magic-related art
*Empty* vintage booster-wraps and display boxes (yes, I have seen this done)
Godbooks, magazines and novels
T-shirts (non-competition)
That's special, but it isn't what the FAQ says.
> So, straw poll: which of the following are interesting enough to be sold here?
I don't think anything should be sold here.
Now, if someone not at all affiliated with the seller happens to be browsing
eBay and notices a cool and unique Magic-related item, and posts it here to
comment on it, or because he thinks it will be genuinely interesting to the
readership of the group, that looks OK, because it isn't advertising.

nope - it's too easy to just change your handle for a while or write
from your friend's computer... i'm against anything connected with
selling here...
