vamp A is in combat with vamp B. B has a Wolf Companion (animal retainer)
and Mr. Winthrop (mortal retainer).

Can A play Invoke Poison Glands, targetting either the Wolf Companion or Mr.
Winthrop ? I don't think they are "opposing animal/mortal", just "opposing
minion's animal/mortal", but I'm not sure.
thanks,

Unless you are playing Target:Retainer, then no. IPG does not allow
you to target a retainer, it allows you to burn an opposing minion
that meets its criteria. It does not allow you to over ride the
standard rukles which only allow you to target retainers at long range
with a R strike.

Correct. The retainers are the "opposing minion's retainers". There are only two
combatants at a time. Only minions oppose each other.

If you use Target:Retainer, would that allow you to burn the retainer,
or just hand strike it at +X damage?

Yes. Target:Retainer allows you to target the retainer as if xe were the
opposing minion.
