Good evening.

My play group came accross an interesting moment the other night.

Someone played an aggravated damage strike on Chaundice, who had an
Armour of Terra.

Can Chaundice use his special ability to prevent the aggravated damage
in this circumstance? We were undecided.

Thanks for your time,

-Tim

Chaundice, 8, FOR POT VIS vic, Gargoyle, 4,
Sabbat. Tremere Antitribu Slave: Twice each combat,
Chaundice may prevent up to 2 non-aggravated damage from the opposing
minion's
strikes that round. Flight.

Armor of Terra, Action, 1 blood, Visceratika/Thaumaturgy
+1 stealth action.
[tha] Put this card on a slave Gargoyle you control.
The Gargoyle with this card treats aggravated damage as normal damage.
Burn this card if this Gargoyle goes to torpor.
A Gargoyle can have only one Armor of Terra.
[vis] As [tha] above, but put this card on this acting Gargoyle.
[VIS] As [vis] above, and the Gargoyle with this card may prevent 1 damage
each combat.

He may not. The damage is still aggravated damage, it's just when
Chaundice has to resolve it (after damage prevention), he just burns a
blood to heal, instead of first one wounding him, and latter ones burn a
blood or be burned.

No, she cannot. The damage is still aggravated even if the vampire
treats it as normal when it is resolved.

I would argue that Chaundice can prevent the damage.

The examples and rulings linked to by others in this topic are cases
of combat cards like Soak and Leathery Hide trying to handle the agg
damage. They don't work because the text on Armor of Terra says, "The
Gargoyle with this card treats aggravated damage as normal damage" not
"The Gargoyle with this card, and cards this Gargoyle plays, treat
aggravated damage as normal damage". However, because Chaundice's
damage prevention is inherent text, it is encompassed as being a part
of "The Gargoyle with this card".

I may be totally off base on this though. So maybe a more official
ruling is in order.

?
The official ruling was cited.

Then would that mean the text on a crypt card is not considered a part
of that minion?

No, it doesn't mean that.

Could you specify then, that treating aggravated damage as normal
damage during combat is only pertinent during the second step of
damage resolution?

Because how he ends up handling the damage (burning blood to heal in
the case of normal damage or any damage treated as normal damage, or
burning blood to prevent destruction in the case of aggravated damage
or ay damage treated as aggravated damage) doesn't change the nature
of the damage. It's still aggravated. And his special is "prevent up
to 2 non-aggravated damage".
