It all depends.
Australian players are notoriously lazy. Players who have said they
will turn up are just as likely to not. If everyone that has
expressed an interest turns up, we might be pushing 20-25.
There are a number of Newie players who will be there, 2 from Brisbane
who are def coming down. 4 of you, some of them, and a few of those.

None from this side of the ditch sadly as our event is on the 23rd -
enjoy the games!

Further to this, I don't require Deck Lists. Players are free to
provide them if they so wish, but they will not be mandatory.

There may be spot checks for deck legality during the day however, and
the winner's deck will be cataloged for posterity on The Lasombra's
website TWDA.

Overall, 21 players turned up for the first Newcastle Qualifier for
the Australian Championships in some 4 years. Even a couple old hands
like John Merton and Ashley South turned out for it (they should have
- it was at their house). The number of players was quite good,
especially given the seeming lack of interest from the local players
(only 4 of the 8 or so regular players turned up).

The event was heavy on the combat, with probably half the decks being
geared towards bash of some sort (rush, intercept and bruise/bleed all
being prevalent). It was a bad day to be a stealth bleeder as some of
the players found out.

After the initial 3 rounds of battle, the rankings were as follows:

RANK PLAYER GW VP TP
1 John Merton 3 11 180
2 Jahn Barfoed 2 7 162
3 Chris Arthur 2 6 156
4 Ben Szymkow 1 7 156
5 Brett Tassell 1 5 130
6 Paul Azzopardi 1 4 126
7 Ivor Blockley 1 3 106
7 Eugene Chan 1 3 106
9 Mitchell Hatherley 1 3 96
10 Roger Atkins 0 2 120
11 Craig Kordiak 0 1.5 108
12 Steven Cowie 0 1.5 102
13 Claudio Falcone 0 1 112
14 Justin Woolley 0 1 84
14 Trent Petersen 0 1 84
14 Todd Hassmann 0 1 84
17 Ashley South 0 0.5 82
18 Justin Evans 0 0 84
19 Shane Lamont 0 0 70
20 Alex Davis 0 0 60
20 Craig Johnston 0 0 60

Craig Johnston and Justin Evans were both pre-qualified, and so pulled
out pre-tournie to give other players a shot. In the final washup,
they needen't have bothered as they both failed to deliever in a
rather monumental fashion... (good one boys).

During the day, and before the final I offered up some promos and even
a couple boosters and bag of beads for getting V:TES trivia right. It
took a lot longer than I expected as not many people knew their
stuff. And some only knew half of it. Craig Kordiak seemed to know
more than everyone else combined, but he just kept shouting out
answers to the person playing for the card. Most of them ignored CK's
shouts, and so lost out.

Chris Arthur pulled out of the final as he wanted to get back to
Sydney early, thus elevating Paul Azzopardi into the final.

Seating in the final was thus:

Jahn (weenie CEL with WWS, Zip Guns and Camera Phones)- John (!Bru
bash) - Ben (FoS Typhonic Beast Bruise/Bleed) - Paul (Malk/!Malk
stealth bleed) - Brett (!Tor Wall with .44s)

John went in only dropping 2VP the entire game, which was an excellent
performance given that he hasn't played in around 2 years or so.
Brett likewise hadn't played in around 2 years and was using someone
else's deck which he quickly tweaked before the day.

John wasn't sure what the settites or the celerity deck were, and put
himself between them which was probably a bad move. Jahn likewise
didn't know what the !Bru were, thinking they might have been some
weenie presence deck when John's first 2 vampires were Frederick the
Weak and Evangeline. His rush (the first of the game), didn't go so
well when his vampire ended up in torpor on 0 blood and minus an arm.
Evangeline was still full at the end of the combat. However,
likewise, Johns attempted assault on Ben's Bupe ended with Evangeline
in torpor on 0 blood, and the 3 combat decks sat around trying to work
out how best to strike. Ben steadily bled Paul who was building up
with Pulses and bleeding into Brett who was flicking bleeds around the
table thanks to My Enemey's Enemy and Telepathic Misdirections. Brett
got lowish, but still managed to have Venere Carboni and Jessica out
with .44 magnums, a KRCG News Radio and Communal Haven.

Eventually, Paul couldn't stand up to it, and the non-combat deck went
first. Jahn followed soon later when Brett dropped a Palla Grande and
bled heavily. John tried to make a deal with Brett to kill off Ben
and then the 2 of them fight it out and Brett agreed. John tried
hunting and bloating a bit to get out another minion, and Brett
stabbed him in the back, bleeding him down to 2 with a newly played
Palla Grande. John then suicided into Ben, losing all of his minions
but for Sarah Brando who was on 0 blood. John died to his own
Dragonbound that round, leaving just the Followers of Set and the !
Toreador.

Brett had now gotten out a third minion to compete with the 3 mininos
that Ben had. But Ben's only maneuvers came from unblocked rushes and
Slams. Granted he could get plenty of presses from superior Typhonic
Beasts, but Brett's kung-fu was the stronger. In the final washup,
Ben managed to torpor one of Brett's minions, but had lost of his own
in the process. Brett then bled him out and won in 2hr and 5min.
Thankfully it was a 2hr 30min final.

Thanks again to all those that made the trip, especially Jahn and
Mitchell from Canberra and Ivor from Brisbane. It was a great day and
though I was knackered at the end of it, I really enjoyed running my
first V:TES event.

A decklist will be forthcoming in the next week or so, when I get it
off the winner.

Not that it mattered in this case, but the 'i'm already qualified so
don't count me' rule went away - had either Craig or Justin done well,
they'd have re-qualified (and blocked other folks from qualifying),
and such players don't get to opt out of that situation (before or
after the tourney) anymore.

(And for that matter, players can no longer go 'I'm not going to make
the championship, so don't count me' either.)

Well, Oscar apparently confirmed with David Vega (prince of Sydney)
that it does work that way still. We will need to confirm again I
guess that this is still legal to do.

It may well work that way for Australia, since you guys tend to have
different qualifying rules than the rest of us. And if Oscar already
okayed it, then you're good. :)
