In some ways I miss this discussion board as the main forum for vtes
players. Some aspects of the vekn site are taking me awhile to get
used to. I think I'll start posting some thoughts back here every now
and again.

Me too. I liked usenet. I don't really like the webforum all that
much. I mean, it's ok. But I miss usenet.

Damn - there's no 'like' button. How do I 'like' this thread?

Whereas from an admittedly non-fanatic* perspective, I've completely
ignored the webforum stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with
webforum stuff, it's probably better for the general masses. But from
a personal perspective, if it's here, I'll read it. If it's not, I'll
not go looking elsewhere..

compulsion.

Yeah, the Webforum is getting worse as time goes on. The moderators
have now taken to locking threads down 'cause they seem to think that
they are unnecessary or are taking up too much data space. Yaa.

I don't have much time to discuss (read/post) about VTES these days. Or even to play, for that matter.
But one thing that I would do for sure, should I be actively discussing the game, is to double-post any discussion I started, one post on the forum, and another here.
On the forum, to be in line with the community trend. Here, to try and keep this NG alive (even if barely).
To double-post is a hassle, sure, but one I would be willing to endure because I like RGTCJ.

Really? Well, that blows. One of the things I liked about the
discussions here, were that the threads could meander on, and evolve.
And if it got too bad, you just set up a kill filter for the thread,
and didn't worry about it afterwards. And moderators do tend towards
censorship (not saying that's happening there, but it's a common
byproduct).
Actually, that's probably the main reason I prefer newsgroups over
web-forums. It's a lot easier to have control over what you need to
bother with. Kill-Filters and Watch-Filters being two, but also a much
easier time of keeping current. Most Web-Forums have a "View New
Posts" button, but those tend to hard-refresh. As in, if there's three
pages of posts, I only have time (or energy) to read one page worth,
if I come back later it just tracks what's new from my last visit.
Here, it sits there indefinitely (if you download text bodies*
automatically). A lot easier to read intermittently.
* And no, I don't mean o+< o+< :)
And if they're having storage issues, that's not a good thing either.
But then again, Newsgroups as a whole do seem to be a dying form. My
ISP recently completely abandoned them, and I had to source an
alternate news server. So there's that on the downside.

Well, it is going that way, if this last week is any indication.
Someone opened a stupid (but harmless and about VTES) poll in the poll
section, and that got locked down, and then there was a discussion
going on about whether or not moderators should be doing stuff like
that, and the moderators locked down the discussion about whether or
not moderators should be locking down discussions. Hilarious.
> And if they're having storage issues, that's not a good thing either.
I suspect the "storage issue" is just bullshit to help justify
shutting down discussions that the moderators don't think should be
going on.

The alternative indication is that re-running polls to death because you
didn't like the answer? Not considered appropriate.

Well, to be fair, that isn't actually what was going on.
And really, the issue that is most egregious was that the moderators
decided to lock and shut down the discussion that was about whether or
not moderators should lock and shut down discussions.

A) Someone posts a bunch of polls with 8 different choices each about
various cards in the polling section.
B) Discussion occurs.
C) Discussion dies down.
D) Time passes.
E) Kevin posts three very focused polls that have a two selection poll
choice. Some or all of these three polls (I don't recall of the top of
my head) address a card that already was polled about.
F) Discussion occurs.
G) Some cranks start complaining about there being another poll about
Parity Shift.
H) Someone posts a joke poll about polls.
I) Joke poll about poll is locked and shut down.
J) Someone posts a semi-joke poll about moderators locking and
shutting down discussion.
K) Discussion occurs.
L) Moderators who apparently completely lack a sense of irony lock and
shut down discussion about moderators locking and shutting down
discussion.
If that looks like a duck to you, I can't help you.
To be clear here--I don't care about the polls. I think internet
discussion forum polls are completely pointless and silly. But I do
care about moderators locking threads and shutting down discussions,
especially when they are discussions about whether or not moderators
should be locking threads and shutting down discussion in the first
place.
My main issues with the 'official' forum are the horrendous colors
that make it hard to read and the non phpbb software that doesn't even
load properly in Firefox on any of my pcs. If space is an issue,
archive old threads not in the rules forums. They're servicable but by
far enjoyable, but since I can't get to them at work so it doesn't
impact me much in any case.
Though people complaining about polls shouldn't visit the polls forum?
Though nothing is stopping the VTES community from using the NG
again. It all but died because LSJ was no longer going to be involved
in the NG, but since that part doesn't matter anymore by all means use
it again.

LIKE!
That's pretty much the same view I have about this matter.
People actively choosing to rant about topics/polls/stuff in the
forum/NG they could easily just ignore give me creeps.
And moderators shutting down discussions/polls give me
creeps^2.
This doesn't smell like a duck.
This smells like censorship to me.

That's because usenet has threading and forums do not. It's a serious
design flaw, IMNSHO.
