Frankie (Lucian bleeds for 9) -> Martin (AUS/PRE Bleed & Bounce) ->
Csaba (Fleurdumal Bleed & Vote) -> Me (VDA) -> Floppy (Temporis
Bleed and some Vote)
I couldn't pass any votes without VDA because both my prey and predator
had titled vampires on the table, so I just made some Embraces and
tried to stay alive with Con Boons/Parity Shift.
Csaba eventually got ousted by deflected bleeds and Martin stole my
Carlton before getting ousted himself.
I managed to get Floppy thanks to My Enemy's Enemy and swarm bleed,
then played Pentex on Lucian, Con Boon x3 + First Tradition so Frankie
conceded.
Me GW3, Frankie 1VP, Martin 1VP
Csaba (Lucian) -> Martin (Vignes) -> Me (CEL Guns) -> Frankie (Some
Laibon deck) -> Floppy (Puppeteer Powerbleed)
My prey equips an Ivory Bow on something like turn three, I don't draw
any guns and am ousted.
Floppy get Csaba before being ousted himself and Frankie goes into the
endgame with 2x No Secrets and >18 Pool so it's impossible for Martin
to oust him.
Frankie GW3, Floppy 1VP, Martin 1VP
Back to our room, more 1vs1's. It takes me about an hour to convince
Martin to play Uncoiling in his Tremere deck.
EC DAY 0
========
Being already qualified, I decide to play a type of deck I've never
played in a tournament before, intercept. Martin plays Tremere
Intercept.
Round 1
-------
Me (Weenie AUS) -> Tzimisce Wall -> Frankie (Lucian) -> Lucian Again ->
DOM/FOR Bleed.
Frankie and his prey contest Lucian. I make one huge mistake by
bouncing one bleed to my prey instead of my crosstable, so Frankie is
ousted too quickly. Once Lucian is back in play, my new grandprey ousts
my predator.
I can't convince my new predator to play stealth on deflected bleeds
(even though he already has a Pentex on Lucian - played by my prey to
contest my Pentex on Lambach). Eventually I run out of everything and
the Tzimsce win the duel easily.
Tzimisce GW3, Lucian Again 2VP
Round 2
-------
Turbo Baron -> Me -> Anarch DoC Vote -> Aching Beauty -> Slaughterhouse
I shut down my predator completely, never letting the Baron out of
torpor and his 60-card deck is getting milled away by ~8
Slaughterhouses.
My first prey is ousted by swarm bleed. At this point, my predator
offers to help me get the GW for 1VP (with me withdrawing after ousting
the other players) to which I agree.
My prey takes exception to this and announces that he will play
`defensively' from now on. Luckily he has only 5 pool and I contest
Isabel de Leon, leaving him with only Alexandra. Le Dinh Tho and swarm
bleed do the job, so he's ousted two turns later.
The Slaughterhouse deck has Heart of Nizchetus in play and needs about
5 minutes to decide whether to burn 2 or 3 Slaughterhouses for Insurance
Scam each turn, so the game times out.
Me GW 2.5, Turbo Baron 0.5VP, Slaughterhouse 0.5 VP
Round 3
-------
Gratiano/Yoann (Tzimisce) -> Mike Nudd? (Stanislava Baltimore Purge) ->
Me -> zkopiosy/Patrick (Ravnos Eldest are Kholo) -> Tomasz Pietkiewicz
(Weenie ANI Rush with Nana Buruku)
I lock down my predator and prey, sending most of my prey's minions to
torpor. Tomasz tries Gratiano's hand and ends up in torpor too. I play
Smiling Jack and announce that I will allow it to be burned once it has
three counters (leaving my prey on three pool). I get Ossian, and bleed
out my prey, somebody burns the Smiling. Tomasz and I wait for Gratiano
to oust Mike, spending our turns hunting and discarding. Once Mike is
out Tomasz offers to go full forward if I don't bleed him, to which I
of course agree. Thankfully Yoann keeps trying to win and Tomasz takes
a few losses. On the last two turns of the three-player game, Tomasz
taps out and has to use a Cats' Guidance to block a Fame hunt.
I equip the Ivory Bow. Tomasz plays a third Tablets and gets Bobby
Lemon. After several turns of duelling during which I manage to
torporize several minions with Ossian+Target Vitals, bleed Tomasz down
to 4, have to go down to 1 myself to pay for another minion and a
Pentex on Bobby I have the critical wake in hand to block Tomasz's
final two rushes on my famed Isabel de Leon.
Me GW3, Gratiano 1VP, Tomasz 1VP
This was one of the most interesting games of the weekend for me.
Thanks to Tomasz and Yoann for a great endgame!
7th place with 2GW5.5
After spectating the finals, it's time for more friendlies!
Martin (TGB Midcap Vote) -> Me (Imbued Toolbox) -> Robert Doktorow
(Gwendolyn Rush) -> David Tatu (New Tremere Fatties) -> Roger Carhult
(Some Laibon Deck with Grapple)
I don't draw Travis, so I spend the first two thirds of the game trying
to stay alive and keeping my prey from getting a VP (DI/Society of
Leopold/etc.).
David ousts his prey, then mindrapes one of Martin's minions to keep
him from ousting me (after some table talk - me: ``Let's be honest;
nobody likes Martin. Don't let him get a VP'' David: ``Ok!'').
I finally draw some Strikes and oust my prey with Laptop/Vigilance,
then burn Mistress Fanchon (David's last minion) with a Society of
Leopold. The endgame is hopeless for Martin, who has to take a Pentex
or a DI every turn, in addition to a bleed for 6-8.
Me GW4, David 1VP
Martin (Weenie DEM) -> Me (CEL Gun) -> ? (Carna) -> Robert
(Couriers) -> Dietmar Range (Reckless Ravnos Breed/Vote)
I deal with Dietmar for three turns of peace after backousting Martin,
which I do with Tension + backrush, but I'm left with one pool, 4
minions, 1 gun.
I spend my first turn hunting and clearing my hand (Vessels). My prey
has built up with 5 minions, Kevlar Vest, ~10 Pool.
My prey makes and attempt at his prey, leaving Robert at two pool.
On my next turn I torporize all but one of my prey's vampires and get
her down to two as well, setting myself up for two VPs on my third turn
of peace. Dietmar breaks and ousts everyone in one turn.
Dietmar GW5
Some more 1v1's and deck tweaking.
EC DAY 1
========
Martin plays Tremere again.
1GW4 to make it to Day two, so I play...
Round 1
-------
Richter (Nossie Vote/Progeny without combat) -> Florian Prosper (Edward
Vignes) -> Me (Edward Vignes) -> Malk Weenie Auspex Madnet
Florian plays Troublemaker turn 1 and puts two on a minion, so I
recognise his deck right away. My prey gets Zoe. Richter gets
Nikolaus. Florian gets Vignes, I contest. My starting crypt is
Boss/Catherine/Edward/Diana. I wonder whether to get DOM for
multi-deflect or PRE for multi-act, and get Catherine. Florian gets
Ingrid Russo and Peter Blaine and bleeds me a bit. My prey gets Ivory
Bow/Sniper/Bowl, 4 minions, then starts win-dealing with Richter. I'm
not too fond of this so I burn his Ivory bow with the Troublemaker,
yield Vignes, play Giant's Blood on Peter Blaine, bleed for 6 with
Daring and transfer out (a turn or two too late probably). Florian
can't kill the Weenie Auspex in one turn and Richter doesn't want him
to have another (mistake, I think). Weenie Auspex wins the duel.
Weenie Auspex GW2, Florian 1VP, Richter 1VP
Round 2
-------
Palla Grande -> Lutz Derangement -> Josha Duell (Arika Rape & Purge) ->
Me -> Nergal Wall
I have Misdirection/2xMajesty/2xSlaughtering on my starting hand, so I
decide to cycle some cards. Misdirect Nergal, bleed for three, he
pays. Hm. Bleed for 6? No wake. First VP on turn 4 with two Seductions.
Josha starts table talking against me. I only just manage to convince
the Lutz deck not to crosstable me (we settle on prey/prey/duel). I
start deflecting Lutz's bleeds back to Arika instead of my prey while
carefully ousting the !Toreador, then stop for about 4 turns while
Josha is wearing me down (he has Arika, Gratiano, Marcus, Carlton).
Finally, I'm on 7 pool, 5 Minions low on blood. 2 of my remaining 4
deflections in hand.
Lutz has Lutz + Umanda, something like 12 pool. Arika 4 pool.
Arika bleed for 6. I ask Lutz if he can oust Arika on his next turn if
I deflect back - ``Yes''. Deflect to Lutz. Josha offers to backoust
Lutz for 1VP, I decline.
My turn: hunt, hunt, hunt. Lutz bleed for three, Arika deflects, I
deflect back, no modifier. Arikas turn, bleed for six, I'm on one pool.
I'm not completely happy with this so on my turn I oust both Lutz and
Arika for the sweep.
Round 3
-------
Matt Green (Victor Pelletier + Toreador Vote/Bleed) -> Assamite Swarm
bleed with combat -> Me -> Kiasyd Stealth/Bleed -> New Titled Ventrue
I have a fairly good start, managing to pass some superior governs.
My prey bleeds my grandprey, who shows a lot of deflects. Matt calls a
KRC against his prey and bleeds once with Aire of Elation, but I don't
recall him taking any other actions during the game. I bleed my prey
down to one (bonding instead of conditioning) and tell him to take his
VP. He goes full forward with four minions, but apparently the Ventrue
Deck is 25 Majesty/25 Second Trad/25 Deflect and a few Villein/Parity.
Prey transfers out. Ventrue get Matt with bleeds for one (I delay
Reins). Hrm! Assamites have build up by now with ~7 minions, 2
intercept locations, and start Loss bleeding me. I try bleeding the
New Ventrue but he still has heaps of second/majesty. Still get him
down to less than 10. Villein. Backshift. I'm out of blood, the
Assamites burn my minions. I didn't watch but I expect the Assamites
took the rest.
Assamites GW3?, Me 1VP, Ventrue 1VP
1GW6 => 12th.
Martin got 7th place with 1GW?, missing two wins due to time-out.
Finals were extremely exciting to watch.
I was especially impressed by Vincent who managed the table perfectly.
Really, really strong player!
After dinner with Erol and a phone call with Walter Paolini I decided
on Weenie DEM for Day 2.
Too tired for friendlies. Must. Sleep.
EC DAY 2
========
Didn't write down starting player for this day, but I never went first
or second, I think.
Round 1
-------
Me -> ZBA (Weenie ANI) -> Ventrue Anti -> New Tremere Vote and Bloat ->
Martin (AUS/PRE Bleed & Bounce)
I bleed out my first prey on turn three or four, the !Ventrue don't seem
to have a lot of intercept. One bleed gets deflected to the Tremere,
then Martin, then back to the !Ventrue. The Tremere play KRC's on
Martin and I keep some of my dem minions untapped so I don't have to
take too many bleeds (Jost is often busy Enchanting down for bloat).
!Ventrue die but I'm out of library, having had to bleed through ~50
pool (and crypt, with 9, later all 10 minions in play). Tremere play
Villein/Golconda for 18 pool, but giving me the vote lock with
Fabrizia/Sean Rycek/Edge. I swarm the Tremere, Martin stays in the game
and bleeds me. When I get the Tremere I'm down to maybe 3 (?) and tapped
out. I die the next turn.
Me GW3, Martin 2VP
Round 2
-------
Me -> Adam Esbjoernsson (AUS/DOM Bleed & Block) -> Black Hand AUS
Block -> Gangrel Vote + Garou -> Eurayle Weenie DOM
On turn 4, Adam is on ten with 2 minions (one tapped), I'm on five with
three (DEM) minions, My predator has Eurayle, Keith Moody, and two more
dom weenies. I have Misdirection/KS/KS/KS/Eyes/Confusion in hand. I ask
Adam whether he has a wake in hand - yup. I stay untapped, Eurayle
ousts me two or maybe three turns later. Gangrel backoust the Black
hand blockers. Adam has to handle a Garou in the endgame but plays
very well and takes his GW.
Adam GW3, Gangrel 1VP, Eurayle 1VP
Round 3
-------
Me -> Inaki Jimenez (Tremere Multi-Act Powerbleed/Vote) -> Jakub
Hrbacek (Una) -> Mumra (Army of Allah) -> Gratiano (Ahrimanes)
I have a terrible crypt draw with all five dem minions amongst my first
7 crypt cards. I have Bitter and Sweet Story in my starting hand so I
play it before seeing the other decks, a mistake which possibly cost me
the game.
I need GW3 or 4 but I don't think I can pass the Assamites or the
Ahrimanes without Inaki so the plan is to keep him low on pool but let
him oust Una, the Assamites and work on the Ahrimanes then oust both of
them in the endgame. There is some talk about Una, but she gets
Pentexed, FD gets DI2'd and Inaki takes his first VP.
Inaki gets the Assamites too but I manage to keep him on <10 Pool. I
have a Pentex for Howler and bleed in hand, but Inaki gets one more
turn, and with handsize 11 and the Heart in play manages a bleed at 4
stealth with his first minion (Dominate Kine/Bonding/Mirror
Walk/Gerald Windham's Special) and Govern/Daring/Conditioning with his
second minion for the third VP. I oust him on my turn.
Should have pentexed one of Inakis minions of course, but I forgot
about Dominate Kine (Howler had two Raven Spies, Gratiano's other
minions could play SwS/CG/FE).
Inaki GW3, Me 2VP
Great game, and Inaki signed my TBASS afterwards! :)
At 1GW5, Antonio and Kamel were ahead of Inaki and me on tournament
points only => tied for 7th.
Final... maybe another thread.
We played some more friendlies with Frankie/Csaba, Robert Doktorow, and
Ivan Marin-Rivas - didn't take any notes but I think Robert won all of
them.
On monday we played even more friendlies. Frankie got GW4 in one with
Nosferatu (backousted my VDA). I got GW3 in one with CEL Gun
(backousted extrala's Warghouls-without-Warghouls deck, Ousted Martin,
got Ivan in the duel). Martin got GW3 with Vignes (I played VDA again,
messed up the crucial turn because I misread Fee Stake). We didn't
finish the last one but I think Ivan would have won with Weenie
AUS/FOR.
All in all a fantastic EC, huge thank you to Damnans and his team!
It was great to meet and play with VTES players from all over the
world, especially Inaki, the Tatus, Team France, Team Germany, Team
Sweden, Tomasz, and of course Csaba/Frankie/Martin.
cheers,
-jakob
I got Lucian contested. On a 150 player tournament. wtf.
:))
Excellent report. Shame on your luck for not quite making the cut to
any of the finals.
I'd ask for decklists but Weenie Aus, Vignes & Weenie DEM really
shouldn't amount to anything new. All are established archtypes.
Drain
Thanks for the great report! Had a lot of fun (though a *lot* less
VPs :D) at the EC, and was great meeting and playing with a lot of
people, once again.
...but I do have to ask: how does a "Puppeteer Powerbleed" work? I'm
obviously missing something here, but an ally that has 0 bleed doesn't
exactly seem like the cornerstone of a powerbleed deck. :)

Oh, and the idea is - prey doesn't have a lot of minions => bleed for a
lot with Call/Seduction, prey has lots of minions => steal some of them
then bleed for a lot with Call/Seduction (though Orian doesn't play
Seduction apparently). Also, you have a fairly solid defense with
unmasked Puppeteers and FBI.
cheers,

Ok, thanks. Cool deck :).

Great Report indeed!
I've been one of the new players there and I had a blast. Really great
vacation.
I'll make my own report, but I must finnish the Storyline first and
make a detailed report for the folks here in Portugal.
Cheers,
Tiago
Yeah, that was a car crash game for me. I particularly liked the bit
where the Kiasyd player asked incredulously what my deck did after I
got a 6 then a 4 point bleed deflected to me at stealth (that I had to
take).
"It gets ousted by you cross-table...?"
Great report! Thanks for posting. It gives a great sense of the
event.

Interesting. I wonder if the contesting rules were different, if this
game would have been more fun for everyone? Lucian does seem to be a
key vamp. It seems like the Lucian Again deck intentionally contested
as a defense mechanism. If the rules were different, then Lucian
Again would have had to use whatever other defense mechanisms s/he had
included in his/her deck.

Interesting! Edward Vignes seems like a very popular vamp, so maybe
not so surprising that you contest. And you even anticipated
contesting from turn 1, and intentionally did so anyway. I wonder if
the contesting rules were different, would people at the table have
had more fun?

Did you consider going forward anyway, hoping that Adam was bluffing?
Why sit there and die, and let Adam win? Maybe the weenie dom would
have ousted you in 1 turn if you had gone forward and failed?

Here's all I know about the final:
Results EC 2009: European Championship (Day 2)
Copied from http://www.sevenoaksart.co.uk/flags.htmHere are the
results from the European Championship (Day 2) tournament that was
played during the VtES European Championship 2009 on November 15th,
2009 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. 40 players participated in this EC
tournament, the standings in the finals were:
1. Martin Weinmayer (AUT) -- 1 GW 7 VP -- 3 VP -- Weenie/Midcap
Toreador antitribu Bleed&Bounce
2. Joaquim Miquel Cuesta (ESP) -- 1 GW 6,5 VP -- 1 VP -- Beast/
Theo Bell Anarch Rush Combat
2. Kamel Senni (FRA) -- 1 VP 5 GW -- 1 VP -- Toreador Grandball
Anneke/Anson
2. Erol Öngün (GER) -- 2 GW 7 VP -- 0 VP -- Stanislawa & Friends
Vote/Bleed
2. Christophe Baltazar (FRA) -- 1 GW 5,5 VP -- 0 VP -- EuroBrujah
The seating order in the finals was Martin --> Christophe --> Joaquim
--> Kamel --> Erol. Congratulations to Martin for winning the European
VtES Championship 2009. Martin is the first player that one the
European Championship twice. The first time was in 1999, so like ten
years ago.
I'd love to hear more, and see decklists!
Great report,

I don't expect that many Lucian, the Perfect decks have a backup minion to
replace Lucian if he is unavailable. I mean, with some of the different
contestation proposals you might live a little longer, but probably
wouldn't have much of a game.

Depends on how different. Would Florian have yielded if he could've
gotten whatever blood was still on Vignes back? Probably not. This is a
case of aggressive contestation, not "oops, I guess we both influenced the
same guy." I didn't see the game, but I assume both players wanted Vignes
and used contestation the way Nergal intended it to be used.

I watched the last half of the game (after winning the draft final which
only took like an hour). Erol had just been ousted by Kamel, apparently
after losing Stanislava to a Temptation of Greater Power. Martin had a
few !Tor out (Jost, Remilliard, Lolita and one or two others). Christophe
had Donal, Constanza, Volker and Lupo. Joaquim had Theo and Beast and had
just dunked all of Kamel's guys (Anneke, Anson and Mariana Gilbert).
Kamel still had a lot of pool, but couldn't really get new guys out
because Joaquim would just murderize them. Joaquim's deck is mostly
combat. He's not going to fail to draw mighty strikes and grapples.
Christophe Parity Shifted Joaquim for 4, so Joaquim went backward, torping
Lupo and Volker. Christophe asked for a truce because he'd obviously just
die if Donal and Constanza went down.
Ultimately some kind of deal was struck between everybody but Martin
wherein Christophe pulls Anson out of torpor, Joaquim doesn't kill Anson
right away and Anson calls a Political Stranglehold, giving 6 pool to
everyone except Martin (Theo and Beast were above 7 cap with Fortitude
skills). I was expecting Martin to delay the vote, but he didn't have it.
After that, Martin started bleeding Christophe and things were looking bad
for him, although Martin couldn't really bring the thunder right away.
Looked like he didn't have much bleed in hand. The only thing he seemed
to never run out of was Majesty as he was blocked a few times by
Christophe. Joaquim went back to killing Kamel's guys, but Kamel really
had a mountain of pool. Kinda looked like the game might go to time.
Martin was encouraging Joaquim to kill Kamel and promised not to go
forward until it was a 2 player game. Christophe tried to oust Joaquim,
but couldn't find enough bleed and died to Martin. Joaquim finally got
the stuff he needed, an Anarch Revolt and Dragonbound. Kamel accepted his
fate and the last few turns of the game went by pretty quickly. As soon
as Kamel was dead, Martin put a Pentex Subversion (two actually, but the
first was Washed) on Beast. Theo tried removing it a couple times, but of
course was blocked. Martin had enough juice to finish Joaquim with more
than five minutes to spare.
That's what I could see from my perspective. Good game. I was glad it
didn't go to time. The players used their time wisely, attempting to gain
the upper hand through dealing and promises when the cards weren't always
in their favor, but nobody tried to talk the game to death and the players
who met their ends did so gracefully. It's interesting that the only
really important minion on the table that wasn't from the WotC days was
Theo Bell.

I'm sure it would have been more fun for Frankie, but Lucian Again
would have died pretty quickly, possibly leading to less fun for him.
I never heard anyone express dissatisfaction with the current
contestation rules all weekend (at least not on any VTES tables;
perhaps the Battlestar Galactica players who also attended the event
feel differently).

I'm not really sure what your idea of fun is. On this table,
contestation created a fairly interesting setup which both Richter and
the Weenie Auspex could, with good timing and careful play, have
exploited to take GW3 or 4 IMHO (a lot more difficult for Richter
obviously).
Florian and I were screwed, with our only means of pool-gain out of the
game (getting anything more than 0.5 was pretty much impossible for me;
Florian's plan was to backoust Richter, then win the duel with daring,
I think).
Since the Weenie Auspex apparently only felt up to a 2VP win deal, I
decided to see whether Florian could come up with anything more
inspiring.
So in summary, for me, it is not `fun' to watch a Weenie Auspex player
who cannot take GW3 with a bleeding predator and a no-bounce prey,
whereas it is `fun' to watch a strong player nearly win a very difficult
matchup. It would have been more `fun' still of course, to have a
chance at taking the GW myself, but I accept the fact that I may be
hosed from time to time when I'm on the wrong side of the mirror match
(due to a rule which makes games a lot more interesting in general).

Why would I ruin somebody's game for no gain? I would have done a
1VP/transfer out deal with the Weenie DOM of course, but no such luck.

Erol was sitting between the two strongest other players, rarely a
winning proposition. Christophe was actually playing EuroBrujah with
Beast and Theo Bell, but didn't draw either. He eventually ran out of
Grapples and Seconds and that was that.
Martin managed to keep Joaquim focused on Kamel, which was good for
Martin and bad for Joaquim who could never possibly have won the duel,
Pentex or no Pentex.
