Yes. We're recovering slowly. :)
Powerbase: Los Angeles was a nice 3-day event that began with Friday night V:TES and Texas Hold'em at Mike Courtois' house. We had maybe 15 people there (some who wouldn't be able to make it to the tournaments and some early arrivers for Saturday's and Sunday's events). Lots of good games to get us warmed up. As well, Poker newbie Albert came looking for some poker lessons and ended up leaving with the majority of the money. Three players were all in on the first hand and Albert had pocket rockets and won. He ended up leaving early that night. I cleaned up the remaining dollars. A bunch of psychos played until the sun was nearly up.
Saturday we had breakfast and got the Citibank Community Center setup for play. Our art gallery contraptions weigh a ton and it is a lot of work to unwrap and hang all that art.
We began the first tournament at 11:00 AM. Our pal Reyda was in town (though exhausted). Other visitors included the Tatus, Brian Moritz and friend Fletcher (from Seattle) and Fred Scott from Arizona. Lists of winners will follow (I'm not the owner of the archons).
Around six PM we played for the Southwest Region Championship. After deducting for already qualified players we had 4 qualifying slots to give away in the event. Reaching the finals were Darby Keeney, Fletcher (I forget your last name Fletcher, sorry), Steve Fazio, Brian Moritz and Alex Harmon. I believe Brian went on to win. Congrats to Brian. Fletcher finished in 5th and didn't qualify but all 4 of the players that qualified are attending GenCon this year. Last year we had several qualifying slots eaten up by players who weren't attending.
Again, people played till sick hours--some probably even sleeping at the venue. Next day we had another tournament beginning at 11:00 AM. The finals were really intense. Mike Courtois played a big vampire deck that had an assault rifle and lots of damaging votes. Brian Moritz and James Lin, playing swarmish decks, were greatly punished by an Ancilla Empowerment and Mike eventually took out his predator and prey. He and STeve Fazio (Ahrimanes) helped each other out and then fought it out at the end. Lots of tense moments and table talk. Could have gone a number of directions. Congrats to Mr. Fazio.
The last event still had, if I remember hearing correctly, 3 tables going. This was great attendance for the last event since people are usually pretty exhausted by then. It began around 6:00 PM and probably ended about midnight or 1:00. I wasn't there. Don't know who won.
I also heard that the Seattle crew and Robert Scythe and Mike Courtois played all day Monday. Sick!

Ah, now I remember. Dennis Lien won with a deck based on "Diversity". Lots of vamps from different clans. Diversity pool gain.
Brian's deck that won the Regional Championship may have been a Legacy of Pander deck.

So 2005 is the V:tES Year of the Swarm?
If I had the time now, I'd check how many decks built to swarm are in the TWD archive this year. Our qualifier had at least two swarm decks at the finals, though they didn't win, and I saw at least two more in preliminary rounds.

There've been lots of years where weenie vampires made big aggressive bleeds or votes. I used the term swarm as oppossed to weenie because instead of immediate assaults they use the Week of Nightmares modus operandi; build build build and then attack when there's maybe 20-30 minutes remaining. Saw Tumnimos, Embrace, web of knives recruit, and so on.
Seems a continuation of last year's glut of Palla Grande decks (just with more diverse approaches now).

Yeah, that was pretty much the approach to the term "swarm" I was referring too. One of the two finalist decks mentioned was mine, a Tumnimos one (without Weeks because I unfortunately don't own any, but nevertheless a build-up-and-oust-when-the-opportunity-presents-itself deck). The other was a Foundation Exhibit/Embrace/Consanguineous Boon/Palla Grande deck.
I'm still trying to round out a Web of Knives Recruit deck for tournament play, but couldn't. Maybe aroud Amaravati and his DOM OBF.

It would be great if this deck could join the Tournament Winning Deck archive. Only one thing is missing.

The decklist I mailed to Reyda--identical to the one I handed Robin--had a min/max/avg. left over from a previous all-Pander version of the deck. The correct min/max/avg. is min 4, max 19, avg. 2.333
Also, it's funny that Jay Kristoff and I talked strategy about Smiling Jack and Panders in Germany, and the next deck I saw on the archive was his PANDER DECK! So I try to win immediately after him, to put our decks together on the clan-sorted archive...and Karol Magda wins (with Panders) on the same day!

Incidentally, the switzerland open has been won by yet another pander deck, played by a french player. His was stuffed of change of target to deplete transient intercept. :)

Not intercept. Wakes. =)
Change of Target kills Wakes. Sure, if all your actions are at +1 stealth, it can help to knock down transient intercept, but the real biggie is that you can always tap your prey out with weight-of-minions, forcing him into his untap resources before he wants to, and then use Change of Target to get the Wakes out of his hand. Once you can be assured he has either 0 or 1 untap cards, you can plan the oust accordingly.
Works best with inherent +bleeders of course (more likely to draw a block, saves your own cards), but Pander aren't noted for that.

One more thing to support that 2005 is the weenie/swarm year... (Pander or not)
David Cunha from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil won this year's SAC yesterday with a weenie politics deck. More to follow in its appropriate thread as soon as I get the archon and decklists in electronic format.

Non-discipline-based decks are magic by themselves, Pander or not ;)
The winning deck was not discipline-based, just the plain old 1- and 2-caps crypt who tries to make a Prince before anyone could bring votes to the table. You know the type.

Good job Brian, Fletcher. Nice to see some names I know making VTES pilgrimages of their own and doing so well at it!
