my buddy says that theft of vitae runs off of rafastio ghoul when
she's at 2 life, because allies cannot have more than their starting
life. I cried foul, because I saw no rule that states such a thing as
ally and life limits.

So I believe that if my rafastio ghoul manuevers to long with
"backstep" then strikes with theft of vitae, if my opponent has no
long range strike and doesn't press, rafastio ghoul should have 3 life
after combat. Am I right or am I wrong?

You are right. Allies can have more life than their starting life
amount.

The prime example being Ossian and his assault rifle ;)

Ossian
Type: Ally
Cost: 3 pool
Unique werewolf with 4 life. 2 strength, 0 bleed. Red List.
Ossian may enter combat with any vampire as a +1 stealth (D) action.
In the first round of combat with a vampire who has played a card that
requires Auspex [aus] during this action, that vampire cannot use any
maneuvers or strikes. Ossian gains 1 life at the end of each round for
each blood the opposing vampire used to heal damage or prevent
destruction that round.

Have your friend read 1.6.3 in the rulebook, where his opinion
is directly contradicted.

Actually, this is a very BAD example, BS, since his friend would
still argue his point and Ossian's cardtext doesn't contradict his
opinion. But 1.6.3 in the rulebook does, so I'd show him that.

Actually, i was not referring to his freinda argument any more at this
opoint but to an ally that can gain one hell of a lot of life...
