Finnish National 2010 - report (no TWDA)

Right. Better late than never, eh?
The tournament was held on Saturday, May 29th in Tampere, Finland.
Place was the same as last year, Sofia-sali right in the center of
Tampere.
Initially I was a little afraid we'd get less players than last year,
but managed to pull in some "new faces", if not to the game, then at
least for VEKN. As I recall, I added four or five new players that
day. I could be wrong, too.
Everything went rather smoothly, seatings were randomized with less
hassle than last year, but I think the dice rolling at EC and other
big events is really the most effective and simple method, combined,
as opposed to giving each player their seating on a card. A crypt card
in this case, five of each clan for each table.
Games were quite varied, and the level was quite high as well, as you
can see from the results. 2GW+7VP's and Matti was still not making it
into the finals. Harsh.
I was unable to scout a lot, but I did see a lot of different decks,
nothing that really stood out as prevalent this year. Naturally,
Villein's were played in plenty.
Can't recall everything about the finals, but here are the seatings
and decks;
Are played his Fat Tremere-deck
Pauli was playing weenie-pot, of all things.
Teemu was playing Toreador Grand Ball, and I think I may have spotted
and Alastor + Assault Rifle there.
Arto's deck I cannot recall. I believe it had Nephandii in it..?
Same goes for Henri's deck as well.
As memory serves, Teemu was the first to drop due to being preyed on
by potence rush, crushing his minions to bits and leaving him little
room to play. This lead to Arto having pretty good seat and having
somewhat easy time to take out Henri. Are was happily bloating and
being Fat & Tremere at the same time, though I recall some combat took
place between Pauli and Are along the way.
In the end, Are took out Pauli with some maneuvering and by then, Arto
was unable to take him out due to heavy bloating and by now, votelock
and heavy permableed.

Note it's somewhat inaccurate in some parts due to tournament fatigue
& hangover. I'm not sure if it was me or Teemu who dropped first, for
example. By the way I think the new drinking rule was nice, in any
other event they'd just have banned alcohol, but here we had a nice
compromise that, unusually, I don't think left everybody angry.
IIRC 49 participants, drinking starting on round three, a rainy,
gloomy day like what you'd expect of finnish summer. I didn't much pay
attention to what happened at the other tables as I had been awake for
~36 hours and had been drinking four days straight.
Game one :
I don't remember who started. There was me - Otso Saariluoma (Dominate/
obfuscate S&B with allies, Sebastian Goulet and Preston Varrick) - was
that Timo or Teemu or something from Tampere (Presence weenie bleed) -
some dude (antimalk stealth bleed with Persephone, Midget etc.) - Jyri
from Turku (Protean !Tremere, I think, Blood of Sandman and Form of
Mist dominate bleed). I played Lasombra stealth bleed with around ten
Nocturns and no suprises.
Malk stealth bleed started bleeding jyri with midget for some fours
and such, which I think hit target, I get rushed with Ossian and
Imdunpulu and sadly have some trouble bypassing allies with Unmasking,
presence weenies oust malkavians, I start bleeding with four Lasombra
for 3-6 and at some point Otso runs out of Deflections (er, PRE
weenies drop before that as I deflect a huge bleed to them, as I
didn't want it deflected back to me) and dies. Jyri seems to be pretty
strong against my one-blood Ermenegildo, empty Henri Lavenant and Dame
Hollerton (I think), but can't oust me (something like one or two pool
left after his turn) and on my turn I get blood from The Coven and
Giant's Blood and bleed a bunch for oust.
Second round, I'm half comatose from eating a large pizza and feel
pretty sick. Anyway, there's me - some dude (Saulot, Uriel, I don't
know what the deck did), some other dude (well if I had ever heard
their names I probably wouldn't remember them by now. Anyway Gustaphe,
potence dominate rush deck I think), Otto Kukkasniemi (Prince of
Tampere) (Kindred Spirits), some dude (I don't have the faintest idea
who, and what he played, maybe some gangrel or ahrimane or somesuch).
My predator gets ousted, Otto gets some rush action from his predator,
Saulot drops at some point when he doesn't have much bounce, rush deck
doesn't dig Nocturns and runs out of deflections, Otto almost ousts me
but is one +1 bleed modifier short, then I bleed for a bunch with a
large hand size (Dreams, Bitter and Sweet Story).
Third round, the beer flows.
Me - Kari-Pekka Vieno (Mictlancleptluchtli, Rico Loco, Talbot's
Chainsaw, Bombs) - some dude (G2 Kiasyd bleed) - some oddly familiar
dude (Arika) - that guy who ousted me in the finals, Arto Heinonen (G4
Kiasyd bleed with some intercept and swords maybe). I don't remember
who started. Shortly, Micktlancheluthi rushes Ermenegildo down, the
Arika deck gets bled a lot, Mick rushes some kiasyds and conjures a
Heart of Nitzchetus, I bleed him out with dominate, the Arika deck
falls, I collect some Faerie Wards fun and can't oust the kiasyd, the
other kiasyd ousts me and then they bleed each other, Arto wins.
Finals, very tired now. Coin toss between me and Arto who gets to
choose last, I win. I don't know what two of the guys play, but it
ends up me - Are Vaskeala (big Mirror Walk / Obedience vote Tremere) -
Pauli Kiova (Prince of Pori) (weenie Potence, I didn't want to sit
next to him and figured if I could sort of get my minions safely up,
oust my prey I could have nocturns and such up so I could also oust
Pauli without losing too many minions) - Teemu Sainomaa (Toreador G2,
don't know exactly what sort of toreador) - Arto Heinonen. I can't
remember the exact order of what happened, but Pauli gets haven on one
of Are's Tremere, torps it, torps some toreador and in the end ousts
him, the Toreador Golconda's Are's haven-stuck tremere, Arto bleeds me
thorough the game (I should have been sitting there instead, but I
didn't see that it was such a no-predator spot) and in the end I can't
drop some second tradition/obedience (he also nicely untapped some
deflected Arto's Kiasyd with obedience) /bounce deck out of 20 pool it
seems, so I drop out first. Later in the game the weenie potence drops
with it's two minions (sorry, I don't know what exactly happened, I'm
guessing Obedience is too much for two minions) and Are wins the heads-
up against Arto, and the teeth pass on to the new champ. Well done.
It was a pretty good tournament I think, I didn't see any bozoing
around, good gameplay overall. For me this was the first time I tried
a real Lasombra stealth bleed in a tournament, I only recently
realized that a stealth bleed doesn't in fact need that much stealth.
This is also the first time I realize how nice that Tremere package
actually is.

Huh. Seems a little light on the Pentex for a European deck. Is the
metagame shifting?

It seems odd that this deck's contents would be considered worth
keeping secret. The plan is very simple: Survive long enough to get
vote lock, then stealth through big nasty votes. Lots of Obedience to
keep rushers/bleeders back. Is it rocket science? Not when nearly
identical decks are already in the TWDA.
