On sunday the 24th of August 2008, 18 Methusalah's gathered to try and claim
Tilburg for their own. It was a very well organized day with a large variety
of decks being played. I've seen Anarchs, I've seen Kiasyd, I've seen
Salubri, I've seen the usual bleed decks and weenie walls and I've, as
always in Tilburg, seen a load of rush. Some of it played very well, some of
it abysmally poor. I even saw a Red List deck go through literally every
moving part red-list has and manage to claim a few trophies. Too bad I was
on the receiving end of that :-). I didn't see a vote deck though, but I was
told there was a voter out there as well.

Only two tables timed in the preliminary and in a remarkably short final,
yours truly managed to win the day.

The final standings were:

Final Rank // Name // Prelim GWs // Prelim VPs // Final VPs // TPs
1 Izaak Havelaar 2 7 3 168
2 Peter Bouwman 1 7 2 156
3 Paul Wiggers 2 7 0 1 48
4 Ralf Lammert 2 7 0 144
5 Manuel Nieman 1 4,5 0 120
6 Jeroen van Oort 1 4 106
7 Hardy Range 1 2,5 112
8 Yuri Nuyten 1 2 112
9 Mark Huyser 0 4 126
10 Prim Ramsaroep 0 2,5 120
11 Ronald van Oostrum 0 1,5 106
12 Koen Tabak 0 1 104
13 Rene de Wolf 0 0,5 82
14 Debbie Nuyten-van den Broek 0 0,5 72
15 Bart Lagsher 0 0 74
16 Herman Jacobs 0 0 70
17 Bart de Nijs 0 0 64
18 Joachim Tresoor 0 0 60

The final looked like:

Manuel (pre/dom seduction bleed) >> Peter (for/dom Spirit
Marionette/Heidelberg) >> Paul (Nakthorheb) >> Anarch weenie >> me (AUS/DEM
wall-ish)

Peter starts out very strong bringing out Eurayle Gelasia Mylona and Esora.
Esora bleeds heavily into Paul while gets out Nakthorheb. Peter steals one
of Manuel's minions (who happens to have dom/for) and burns it with a Daring
the Dawn while landing another big bleed on Paul. Ralf is playing is sitting
at the worst possible place as he is trying to get Undue Influences through
to get his machine running, but I bring out Kite as a first minion and once
I equip it with a .44 Ralf is pretty much out of the race for a VP. Nothing
worth mentioning really happens, as most players at the table just spend
their turns playing bloat masters and bleeding into their prey. Manuel is
playing Social Charm with Seductions, Peter steals and bleeds, Paul plays
Public Trust/Enticement, Ralf plays Undue Influence and I'm doing Kindred
Spirits. The amount of wakes on the table is amazing and literally every
bleed gets blocked or, eventually, bounced. Since Paul is the only one
without any intercept or bounce he is quickly done for and Peter takes the
first VP. Since Ralf is effectively shut down, I can bloat at my leisure
while taking potshots and Manuel's pool with Kindred Spirits and Confusion.
Most of it gets bounced all over the table and most of it ends at Peter, who
is still in a strong position, but not at that much pool.

A few turns later Ralf also succumbs to Peter's spirit marionettes and
perma-stealthed bleeders, but by that time I have also brought Manuel down
to 3 pool. I lunge at Manuel to oust him, but he produces 3 wakes and 2
deflections and survives 1 pool remaining. All I have untapped is a Carlton
van Wyck and I'm out of wakes. Peter sees his only chance to get past the
wall and goes all-out to try and oust me, but fails to topdeck more
conditionings and leaves me on 7 pool. I oust Manuel the next turn with a
bleed for 1 and with over an hour on the clock I know the game is mine. We
play for 2 more turns, but Peter realizes he can't possibly get past my
defenses and forfeits when I shoot Eurayle to torpor.

Finals: Me 3 VP, Peter 2 VP.

Very well-played by Peter and any other seating of the final table, would
probably have resulted in him winning the day.

Now for my decklist:

Deck Name: The wall that is not really a wall
Created By: Izaak Havelaar

This deck originally started as mono Auspex deck with guns and Black
Hand-tech for bloating purposes, but evolved into something that can
actually oust players as well. The gameplan is to feign being a bleed deck
that's not drawing into its payload while bloating enough to bring out a few
minions and equip one or two Magnums. Once you feel you're pretty safe from
your predator, start actively blocking your prey's minions with Eagle's
Sight and bleed hard into him. Once you have secured a VP just bloat and
block some more and be the last man standing for the 3 VP gamewin.

Taste of Vitae is vital to keep your bloat going and the Target Vitals act a
nasty surprise that deters combat decks from picking a fight with you. It
can also be used to knock out a weakened minion or put a rather painful dent
into a Warghoul or some other ally. Other than that it's really just a wall
with a healthy amount of stealth bleed to go with it.

I'm quite happy the deck did exactly what it had to do. I got the 3 VP
gamewin in 3 out of 4 games and I would have gotten it in the first game as
well if the combat guy at the table hadn't decided that it was a good idea
to give his prey 12 more pool (long story). I actually had pretty bad draws
all day long, at one point sitting on 6 masters. People were also quickly
picking up that blocking a bleed for two and let me flush my stealth isn't a
really good idea and so combined with the fact that there wasn't really a
lot of stealth around on the tables I played, I was jamming quite a bit on
both intercept and stealth.

The finals were really not that interesting as I could pick a spot and just
placed myself between the deck with no backwards options and the +1 stealth
weenies. From there on it was just making sure Peter didn't catch me with a
Spirit Marionette / Heidelberg. The prelimary games were a lot more exciting
and required a lot more thought on how to act.

Regardless, as always in Tilburg, I enjoyed a well organized tournament in a
good location and look forward to being the rush magnet next time around :-)

This deck looks great (both strong and fun to play).

Did you consider Deny or Nose of the Hound?

That's a great strategy that comes naturally to these types of
decks.
Great job!

Nice deck! No disguised weapon?

Did you have any problems in equipping the magnums the hard way?
Intercept might not be a problem because of your stealth but I usually
find equipping the normal way seems like a waste of an action (you
could be bleeding or staying untapped for intercept) so i almost
always use concealed weapon or disguised weapon if the disciplines
allow it. It also allows for the surprise moment when you whip out a
gun and start blasting with target vitals hehe imagine the look on the
rusher's face

So, is there a reason why you wouldn't consider your deck 'a toolbox'?

Interesting that you won with it while having such a feeling of
control AND bad flow. Toolboxes sometime do well, but I've not
regularly seen them done so without good flow/card control. Unless
it's mental table mojo.

Anyway, well done!

<snip own text>

Since there seems to be a small misunderstanding between me and the
tournament organizer.
For all intents and purposes, consider the above report a point-of-view
report and not in any way official.

Herman will post an official report in either a new thread or in this one.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Well to be honest, Izaak more or less described everything what there is
to say about the tournament. The only thing he forgot to mention was that
the theme of the tournament was the Anarch movement. This way the
participants were inspired to use the cards from the Twilight Rebellion
set.

As a matter of fact three Anarch decks competed. An Anarch Brujah Bruise &
Bleed deck, An Anarch Assamite Tap & Bleed deck and an Anarch Weenie
Presence deck. The last one even reached the final as you can read above.
Maybe this is proof that the Anarchs are not only suited for casual play.

See you all at the next tournament.

Herman

I was wondering the same thing, and figured that "toolbox" being a
dirty word was the most likely reason. :)

Well... I got *really really* lucky in one of the preliminaries. If I
wouldnt have been first seed Peter would have taken the table I think. But
yeh, it was nice to win once again :-)

> So, is there a reason why you wouldn't consider your deck 'a toolbox'?

Because it doesn't play like a toolbox. It's actually pretty focused at what
it's supposed to do, but on the tournament's metagame I was just sitting on
intercept and stealth whiel trying to find cards I could actually play.
