Why 22? You clearly want Uta (as otherwise, why have 5?), but with 22
minions, the likelihood of drawing her, even when there are 5, is
tiny. 5 is a good number for a superstar with 12 minions.

Generally speaking, unless you have some sort of wacky reason to have
more than 12 minions in a crypt (having 100+ Hermana Menor is always
good to confuse people; having a large number of Tupdogs is
reasonable; some kinds of crypt mill decks can get milage out of large
crypts), but if you have just a regular deck, 12 is the right crypt
size.

8 Master is low in this kind of deck--20% masters (i.e. 18 in 90) is a
good place to start, master wise, and adjust up or down based on the
specific deck. You generally want to have enough masters so that you
can usually play 1 a turn, but not so many that they gum up your hand.
In a deck like this (i.e. one that doesn't cycle cards at an unusual
rate), somewhere between 15-20 is not at all unreasonable.

> Reaction (17 cards)

> 2  Telepathic Misdirection

Telepathic Misdirection is one of the strongest cards available to
this deck--bleed bounce is incredibly strong, and that it can double
as intercept in a pinch is fantastic. Going up to, like, 8 (assuming
you have that option) is completely reasonable.

Cauldron of Blood and Drain Essence are bad cards--that you *must*
play them on the 2nd round+ is a huge disadvantage for what you get.
Blood to Water is kind of the same, but at least it is very powerful
if you can play it. I'd probably take out all the Cauldron of Blood
and Drain Essence, and at least one of the Blood to Waters. Walk of
Flame has the same problem, but at least is very potent (2R Ag is
strong), so really the only good second round strike. Having a few of
those is generally reasonable. Turn the 8 or so open card slots into
more Apportation and Theft of Vitae.

Hope this helps.

Why 22 cards? Do you think there's any way you'd ever get out all 22? I
know you've got Paul Cordwood in there (but not Malgorzata), but you only
have one copy, so you aren't really likely to draw him to use his special.

Either pick the best 12 or stack your crypt with Paul and Malgorzata so
you can use the big crypt to fuel their specials.

> Library: (90 cards)

This is a horrible waste of master phase actions. Master cards are the
strongest in the game. Plan to play a master card every turn.

Psychic Projection is a very weak card because it only lasts a turn.
Heart of Darkness is really only good for trick decks. I could see
wanting it if you were running Burst of Sunlight, but you aren't. Even
with 5 copies of Uta, you still only have 6/22 vampires that can play this
card. You might never see them.

The rush actions aren't a bad idea at all, but overall your deck has too
many actions that aren't just bleeding. Speaking of which, I think this
deck could use a couple more Governs and some Conditionings.

Fast Reaction is a very weak card. The intercept you have here is fine,
but you might want more wakes or a big wad of Deflection so you can leave
one guy up to Deflect bleeds.

I see 14 cards only usable in the 2nd round and 3 Apportations, 2
Telepathic Tracking and 2 Traps to get you there. Do you see something
wrong with this picture? I know you have Hawgs, but you might not draw
them and they only work for one minion. Plus sometimes opposing minions
press to end. Read Intentions doesn't gel with your strategy at all. Do
you want to hurt people or dodge? Pick one. You would do much, much
better just running like 10 Theft and 8 Apportation. You could keep a
couple Walks of Flame. In general 2nd round strikes don't work that well.

I'm not sure why you'd have Palatial Estate at all, much less two of them.
Palatial Estate is often worse than hunting. I don't see the
infastructure to support the expense of Helicopters. The other stuff
might have a place here, but I think you'd be better off with unique
equpment like Ruins of Ceoris, Ivory Bow and Bowl of Convergence, if you
have access to them.

Combat gets an overhaul...

Combat (38 cards)
8 Apportation
4 Blood Fury
2 Blood to Water
6 Telepathic Tracking
10 Theft of Vitae
4 Walk of Flame
4 Weather Control

This combat package will probably get you at the range you want, will
let you get around SOME Majety-type combat and leaves you with some
nice second-round material in case you meet Animalism "Death of 1000
Bats" or Celerity pressing for multiple rounds. Won't save you
against Fortitude Traps or Trap-Apparitions... but then little does.

Action (17 cards)
7 Govern the Unaligned
3 Harass

***2 Recure the Homeland

3 Rumble
2 Rutor's Hand

Recure the Homeland will let you get Uta and Paul out of some trouble
if there is some hardcore combat floating around. The rest seems okay
to me. Maybe change the Rumbles to Nose of the Hound (nothing like
Stealth-Rush)...

Equipment (8 cards) WHY OH WHY????

2 Flak Jacket
2 Hawg
2 Helicopter
2 IR Goggles

You have 2 Rutors Hands. Either make MORE Rutors Hands or toss in
more untaps. Helicopter is kinda woeful for the other options you
have. I have Helicopters in a deck where a 2cap Tzimisce Baubles
itself to become the Helicopter... cheaper, but it more conditional in
return. Plus, you'll get blocked. No stealth floating in this thing.
The rest of the equipment is nice, but you'll get blocked. Tremere
trying to get Hawgs is going to be blocked. Flak Jackets are a waste
of your time mostly, IR Goggles are shiney but not that shiney. Not
Bowl of Convergence shiney, not Gran Madre di Dio shiney...

Action Modifiers = 0
You've got some decent Dominate going on. Why not just toss in a
couple of Conditionings or Mirror Walks (used mostly at [tha] not
[THA])...

Still, 22 minions is not a good idea. Unless there is a specific
reason to use more than 12 (is there a specific reason you are using
22?), go with 12.

Still need more than 10 in 90. Again, like, 20% is a good place to
start. Which is 18 in 90. You want to play a master card every turn if
you can.

Really--Drain Essence is not good. At superior, it costs 1 blood and
gains 3. Which is one more than Theft. Except you can't play it on the
first round. And can't play it if you have no blood. Just more Theft
is infinitely better. And Cauldron of Blood isn't much better. Just
have good first round strikes (i.e. Theft or maybe Blood Fury to hose
fortitude and torporize) and some Walk of Flames is really the optimal
THA combat package.

Weather Control is actually something you might want to use more of--
it is food for killing retainers and torping guys you block hunting.

Well, blood fury helps against fortitude traps - just not against UP
traps.

With uta as the primary focus the cost isnt much of an issue.

and in response to all the awesome rares people have been suggesting,
rares cost too much money, upgrading my deck from what i have is going
to cost $22NZD

Drop the heart of darkness, I would turn them into either more enter
combat or more bleed, if your not taking out their minions, you want
to be doing pool damage, this should be determined by the number of
minions you plan on bringing out and their discipline spread, if u can
get a lot of cheap vamps with Dominate then run a lot of Governs to
get big bleeds after Uta clears a path, If your vamps are larger then
you need to not be blocked as often when bleeding big, so other vamps
need to help clear a path.

This looks good, 2 Eagle Sights for 1 of each of the Precogs and
Spirit's would be nice but not necessary.

I have found that Thaumatugy combat to be very week compared to
Animalism and Celerity Gun's long rang combat, Animalismcan can
control the press step and stop you from using your equipment and
Celerity will out maneuver you out press you and out Strike you, that
being said Theft of Vitae is one of the most powerful cards in your
arsenal and your combat should revolve around it. I would run somting
like this...

Combat [38]
8x Apportation
5x Aura Reading
2x Blood Fury
2x Blood to Water
2x Telepathic Tracking
9x Theft of Vitae
2x Thoughts Betrayed
2x Trap
4x Walk of Flame
2x Weather Control

Keeps some of the utility of yours with a focus on long range.

> Equipment (8 cards)
> 2  Flak Jacket
> 2  Hawg
> 2  Helicopter
> 2  IR Goggles

Drop a the Helicopters, their expensive, the only useful if the first
action was successful( most your actions are at zero stealth, so a
smart prey will block your first action as often as possible), and you
can only have 1 vehicle per minion, turn them into more bleed or
rush.

Couldn't make myself go past a tremere topic without a word ;)

I would greatly suggest dropping Hector Trelane out of it. Yes, his
special looks strong at first. But he comes with an in-build anathema
tattooed on his forehead, so you essentially giving 4 free pool to
whoever want's it. He's just THAT fragile.
5 Haven Uncovered is an overkill. You really don't need that much with
Uta's special and 6 enter combat actions.
I'd leave 2 at most and exchange them for Spirit Summoning Chamber /
Perfectionist / Pentex Subversion / Rötschreck / anything you see
appealing.
Still drop Drain Essences. Add anything else - it will be a better use
of cardspace. you could add Burst of Sunlight to use together with
Guardian Angels for a first-round aggravated. Or Rego Motus, if you
have them or can afford them.
Ruins of Ceoris is way better than Hawg. At least swap one, since
Ruins are unique.

Reasonable. Assuming you are fairly new to the game, the good rule of
thumb is plan on a 12 card crypt, unless you have a good, concrete
reason to do otherwise.

> what master cards would you recommend?

Perfectionist to gain blood, Giant's Blood if you can get one (they
come in a lot of starters these days). Vast Wealth if you have
equipment. Elder Library to increase hand size. Dreams of the Sphinx
or Fragment of the Book of Nod or The Barrens to cycle cards. Fame to
make your prey lose pool when you beat them up. Minion Tap to get
blood back from a big minion. These are all good, generic (i.e. non
strategy specific) masters to use if you lack other good plans. Even
more Blood Dolls is reasonable.

> With uta as the primary focus the cost isnt much of an issue.

Sure, but the cost isn't the main issue (although for every other
minion *but* Uta, it is significant). It is that Drain Essence (and
Cauldon of Blood) are completely useless in your hand unless you have
a press also. And don't pay off enough when you can play them. They
are simply too conditional and not good enough to be worth the effort.
Again, with Drain Essence, you are gaining 1 blood (2 if you are Uta)
over Theft, but very often won't be able to play it ('cause you don't
have a press or your opponent has a press to end). The trade off just
isn't worth it.

In terms of Tremere combat, these cards are generally the ones worth
using:

-Theft of Vitae. Very strong. Flexible. Ignores damage prevention. A
strong card.

-Blood Fury. Not bad. Ignores fortitude. Does 3 damage. Good in
moderation.

-Walk of Flame. Suffers from being second round, but 2R Ag damage is
often worth the effort (as it can burn someone if you get lucky). A
small splash in a Tremere deck can pay off.

-Weather Control. Good, non preventable environmental damage. Kills
retainers.

-Apportation. You like being at long. You often want to press, even
just to play more Theft or a Blood Fury.

Other than that, most other Tremere combat cards are fringe worthy, at
best.

> and in response to all the awesome rares people have been suggesting,
> rares cost too much money, upgrading my deck from what i have is going
> to cost $22NZD

Sure. Don't worry about the crazy rare cards. A deck like this can do
very well with mostly commons. Govern and Conditioning are incredibly
strong in, well, any deck. Wake/On the Qui Vive, Telepathic
Misdirection, and a smattering of intercept will keep you alive. All
commons.

Rego Motus - prevent 4 from the opposing minion's strike is huge. If
he play uta, it's free.

Ah, yes. New. And thus easily overlooked. But correct.

Much better. But still unclear on why 13 instead of 12. If you really
want Uta, the more minions in the crypt, the less likely you are to
draw her.

Not horrible. Contrary to a previous opinion, having a Hunting Ground
is in no way out of the realm of reason. And maybe turn one of the
Haven Uncovereds into another Blood Doll. Probably don't need 2
Guardian Angels.

Assuming your first round of combat works (you steal some blood or do
3 damage), and you successfully press. And then play Blood to Water,
the 4 Drain Essences aren't going to be able to do anything (as your
opponent won't have any blood to steal). Really. Drain Essence. It is
bad. At least Walk can burn someone--you drain them of blood on the
first round and/or Blood to Water them, and then Walk, if it hits,
they vanish. If you are good on the first round of combat and then get
to the second round, there isn't any blood to steal.

5 in 13 is almost perfectly optimised for star decks, one extra minion
in crypt and it still gives a high chance of drawing her in opening
crypt.

Sure, but the deck is 4 in 13 if you're thinking of Uta as the star.

I generally go 5 in 12, and still am reliably disapointed by not
drawing the important vamp. Just started a game of JOL with 5 Anarch
Converts in 12. Not a single Anarch Convert in my opening crypt.
Again.

So 5 in 13 is certainly better than 4 in 13, but either way, I'm not
seeing the advantage over 5 in 12.

I have about 6 decks with thau as a key focus, and i think maybe _one_
has been slightly tweaked to include Rego Motus. Damn new cards being
all shiney and good, and me not having time to actually PUT THEM IN DECKS.

Although i have finished work for the year. yay me! that should free up
8 hours a day or so to work on decks....

I like having both. permanents can be handy. if you can find one, Ruins
of Ceoris is a !Trem equipment (that becomes a location when in play)
that gives you a maneuver OR press. Is very handy for decks like this.

On a related note, when I'm playing a superstar deck, i like 5 in 13
rather than 5 in 12. Gives me that satisfaction that i will likely draw
them, but just takes the psychological edge off worrying that i'll draw
an uncontrolled region of *all* superstar.

She has a title and a pretty cool special, but her disciplines for her
cost don't recommend her much, based on your library (lots of THA).
maybe ditch her and go down to 12. Yes I know you have Paul.

> Library: (90 cards)
> Master (14 cards)
> 4  Blood Doll
> 2  Effective Management

Probably unnecessary. Replace 1 with a Dreams. Maybe replace the other
with a Barrens? It is very hard to find reasons not to include those
cards in a deck.

> 2  Haven Uncovered
> 2  Guardian Angel

These are good but expensive. Can you really afford them? Maybe some
experience with the deck will tell you.

> 2  Mob Connections

Definitely don't need 2 of these, especially as they are unique. Ditch
one for maybe a KRCG.

> Action (15)
> 8  Govern the Unaligned
> 2  Harass
> 2  Rumble
> 3  Rutor's Hand

Decent. Maybe go down to 2 Rutors.

> Reaction (19 cards)
> 3  Enhanced Senses
> 4  On the Qui Vive
> 3  Precognition
> 3  Spirit's Touch
> 6  Telepathic Misdirection

Eagle Sight is a very useful card at super and every vampire in your
crypt has AUS. Maybe ditch 1 Precog and 1 Spirits for 2 Eagle Sight?

> Combat (38 cards)
> 7  Apportation
> 5  Aura Reading

Maybe only 4 of these. Replace with an Apportation.

> 3  Drain Essence

Ditch these. Replace with 2 apportation and 1 theft. You want to do
well in the first round. Every combat has a 1st round. Not every
combat has a 2nd round.

> 2  Trap

These aren't quite as good as you might think, but see how you go.
Will depend a lot on your metagame. If you are facing hitback, war
ghouls, magnums, etc., these are not useful. If you are facing
prevent, they are very useful.

> 3  Walk of Flame
> 2  Weather Control

Yeah I think both of these cards a bit overrated, but again, will
depend a lot on your metagame whether they work for you.

> Equipment (4 cards)
> 2  Hawg
> 2  IR Goggles

Drop 1 of each. Replace with a Ruins of Ceoris (ESSENTIAL for this
deck, you must have one) and maybe a Kevlar Vest. Permanent prevent is
very good, especially for a vampire getting in a lot of fights like
Uta will be.

Congrats. You win the most improved award! Just a few points:

* 4/90 wakes is kind of low. This means you'll frequently have to leave
vampires untapped or you won't be able to defend yourself. Either add
more wakes or play some Deflections so you can use them untapped.

* You are rushing so you might as well add a Fame or two.

* You will rarely ever need 90 cards in a deck like this. If you lower it
to 75 or 80, it will increase the consistency of your draws. I used to
scoff at those who gave me this advice, but I tried it and it really just
makes the deck better. Don't worry. You won't run out of cards.

* Some of your picks like Hawg may work out great or you may find it's not
worth the time, so keep tweaking the deck to find what works best. You
may want more rushing, more Govern, more Theft, more reactions.

* Drain Essense is almost never a better choice than Theft of Vitae.

It's very playable.

Any improvements that are going to be suggested are mostly just personal
preference. For example, I'd not use IR Goggles (meh equip actions..) but
just play 2 more apportations and I'd not use Drain Essence but instead play
2 more Thefts. I'm also not a fan of Guardian Angels though. Too expensive
and it doesn't really help against anything you can't handle without them.

Just play it a bit and see what happens.
