unofficial report+TWD : French Championship Qualifier, Nancy, France (febrary 8th 2008)

which was held on sunday, febrary 8th 2008.
There were 24 players for this sanctioned, constructed tournament (3
rounds+final). 1GW 5VP was needed to hit the final.
Seating of the final was :
Orian (1st seed, Khazar's Diary) -> Thomas (3rd seed, Giov Gr4-5 toolbox) ->
ZBA (4th seed, Shambling) -> meh (5th seed, !malk S&B) -> Marius (2nd seed,
ani/pro intercept combat)
Marius didn't know at all what I was playing, hence his choice of seating.
Orian seated knowing full well what everyone was playing, though.
I knew Orian's deck generates an insane amount of minions in a short time,
so tried to go as fast as I could in order to become his predator, pounding
on Marius' pool. Thomas got del Giorgio or wazzit out (the one hunting for 3
blood by removing cards in ash heap), ZBA got some Giovanni and 1 Shambling
very fast, Orian started spilling Embraces and allies around, reaching 9
minions in 13minutes.
ZBA and I agreed on an unstable truce of no rush vs no back-bleed and I
moved forward, downing Marius to 4 pool. ZBA breaked the deal and tried to
oust me with "yo-yo Fame"+heavy bleed, but failed. Then Marius was ousted,
but Thomas and I were still the weakest players on the table, as Orian was
slowly but surely grinding Thomas' pool with sheer swarm and ZBA was getting
one more Shambling out. Orian had Carlton and Unmasking.He actually didn't
put into play Khazar's Diary during the final. I thought it was because
there were 2 other players with Giovanni that could have benefited of the
Diary instead of Orian, but he told me afterwards it was because he simply
didn't draw it at all.
Thomas and I agreed on a deal which was 3/2 or 1/4, depending on whoever
would win the duel. So I pitted all my resources against ZBA (back-bleed,
intercepting the shambling recruit actions, anything that would make me blow
some steam after his betrayal), eventually ousting him. But Orian had grown
wayyy too strong and simply killed Thomas and I in the right order with
swarm bleed after 1h40min or so.
Overall Orian wins the final with 3VP. Congratulations to him ! As a side
note, he had also won the same qualifier in 2007 in the same city (now it's
a "ghost tournament", with archon results lost and never sent to WW).
Thanks to Raspael for organizing a smoothly-run tournament and for judging ;
thanks to the Arcadia shop and to Gwen for hosting the tournament, Nancy is
a nice city and the local players were equally nice. See you around next
year.
