Whenever I have enough food, I always wonder which is better to hang  
around for exp or to go down quickly. What do you think?

By the way, I'm playing rogue 3.6.3 from the rogue restoration project.

in general you want to keep moving down. early in the game you might
hang about for experience, but not too long. dying of starvation is an
all too common end to an otherwise good game. the point of food in the
game is to keep you moving.

I never hang around.  I might need the food later, and there's the
possibility that instead of experience I get killed.

IIRC, there's a guarenteed food every 3 levels, which is enough for
normal diving.  If you happen to have a surplus...

I've died many times from starvation when simply checking all rooms
via the shortest logical routes. Keep going down.
