What ARE your character presets?
Some examples of incompatible ones would be if you had gender
set to male and role set to valkyrie, or race set to gnomish and role
set to monk, or alignment set to lawful and role set to barbarian.

No, this is actually a bug.

I've fixed it now and have tagged 4.0.4, so there will be a release with
the fix later today.
