Note: I played with some patches to get more information at the end of
the game (Show_born, Show_extinct, dump-file patch).

Be warned: The story is really long and has spoilers inside.

Patito grew up in a really harmonic family of neutral gnomish-healers.
All of his brothers and sisters had sworn never to kill any living
creature. They even refused to harm undead creatures. After his big
brother Patosso had accidentally harmed a creature Patito was sent to do
it better. And so he entered the Dungeons of Doom with his kitten
Felini.

Because he always had been bad in surgery, he decided not to use his
scalpel and to heal all creatures bare-handed.

Soon he noticed that most of the creatures he met were really mad and
reacted aggressively when he tried to heal them. So he always had to run
away and wait until his pet Felini killed the mad creatures.

He soon found a food-shop and a general-store, bought an amulet that
Felini seemed to like and put it on. He also found an orcish helm and a
pair of hard shoes somewhere.

Soon later he found the entrance to the Mines, where a lot of peaceful
gnomes lived. He fell through a trap door and only because he used his
wand of sleep he made it back to Felini. Patito was a bit frightened and
decided to get out of all this darkness.

Back in the main dungeon he descended a few levels and was suddenly
attacked by a few rats. He healed his wounds and prayed, but that helped
only a few turns. He passed out.

When he woke up again his amulet had disappeared and Felini killed the
rats within 5 turns. Patito noticed that he still had all of his healing
potions and decided never to be such a cheapskate again.

Going much deeper was too dangerous, so Patito went back to the Mines to
reach the Mines-town, where he immideately spoke to a friendly neutral
priest. Now he had the good feeling that his god was protecting him.

He quaffed a few healing-potions and got enough HP to survive even
terrible gas spore explosions. He also picked up a new helm, armor and a
cloak of invisiblity.

He sold useless and unidentified stuff, bought a magic lamp, a magic
marker and donated some more gold to the priest.

Armed with a pick-axe and together with two tame cats he returned to the
Dungeons of Doom, where he tunneled to 2 chambers that contained a lot
of gold. He used the gold to buy a big and a small oracle. With now
Xp-Lvl:3 Patito felt a lot safer.

Patito decided to explore the mines a bit deeper. While doing that he
found the bones of a poor gnome that must have been a cheapskate with
his healing potions. There was a lit magic lamp, and a lot of cursed
food on the poor gnomes grave. Patito also tamed his 3rd cat and a dog.

Because it was difficult to keep all these pets together one of them
(Felini) was left behind. A poly-trap polymorphed the other pets a bit,
and Patito reached the bottom of the mines together with
dog/troll/centaur. A luckstone was quickly found behind a secret door,
and another poly-trap helped one of his pets to become a big mastodon.

Back in Minestown the mastodon deserted two shops. Patito had to lock
two doors to protect Izchak and the priest.

Together with the mastodon Patito descended deeper into the main
dungeon. He found the bones of another poor gnome and got an amulet of
ESP and some potions. He also found a BoH and after a game of sokoban an
amulet of reflection. He chose to use the amulet of ESP and switched to
the amulet of reflection whenever a dangerous creature was near.

Patito found another neutral priest, an ancient rouge level, the portal
to the quest, the entrance to Fort Ludios, and a book shop. None of the
dragons on the quest level left useful scales, and Patito wasn't
accepted for the quest because he wasn't experienced enough (XP:3
HP:44).

Finally at about Dlvl 20 Patito found a magic whistle. The whistle made
life a lot easier and helped him to get a new pet-team: black naga,
black dragon, and mastodon. Now Patito took all the gold he found and
bought more protection.

He also found some jumping boots, a shield of reflection, a
hawaiian-shirt, a robe (the mastodon somehow found the poor priest) and
a magic marker. Soon later he gained a few levels (1xwraith, 2xfoocobus)
and started his first alchemy-session (XP:6 HP:>100).

Somewhere below level 20 suddenly a trap door sent him 3-4 levels deeper
into a maze. Patito concluded that he was now on a level between
Medusa's island and a legendary castle.

Without a pet Patito danced around for a while, but finally decided to
wish for a figurine. So Patito rubbed at one of his magic lamps and got
a mighty Archon. Patito was still indecisive how to cure Medusa, so he
went down to the castle. Because he had no magic resistance he always
kept a huge distance from the Liches. And finally he found a /WoW(0:2)
and wished for GDSM.

Patito got a scroll of mail that contained a diagnosis for Medusa: She
definitely needs some sleep. So he went back up to Medusa, and asked the
Archon to be quiet and to stay downstairs. After Medusa was snoring
loudly the Archon came upstairs. Somehow Medusa must have had a really
bad dream. She never woke up again.

Back upstairs the Mastodon had gone wild. Patito gave 2!oGL to his
Archon, but all he did in respond was killing the mastodon. While
exploring the level Patito found another poly-trap and one turn later
the Archon had polymorphed into a jackal. (sigh)
Patito used another wish for a new Archon and hoped to find a special
scroll soon. (His /WoW was at (0:0)) In fear of trap-doors he leashed
Archy2.

Patito found some speed boots and after a quick visit at fort ludios he
zapped a wand at a lot of old useless stuff and got new (mostly useless)
stuff. He enchanted his armor and after another alchemy-session he felt
quite healthy (HP:357 AC:-42 Xp:8)

He went down, bribed Asmodeus and Baalzebuba, and Archy2 killed Juiblex
quickly.

He made new friends and had a nice team:
Yellow Dragon, cockatrice, black dragon, Archy2
But sadly he lost the cockatrice to a desintegration breath, and the
yellow dragon to a poly-trap.

New pet-team: Grey Dragon, Grey Dragon, Archy2

Then Patito fell through a trap door into Orcus Lair. And a few steps
later he fell through another trap door. Only the leashed Archy2 was
still at Patito's side.

Patito didn't want to go back up (He had no plan how to deal with Orcus
anyway). From now on Patito always used a =oLev to explore the dungeon.

Finally Patito got shock resistance and desintigration resistance.

He tamed an Arch Lich and lost it to a purple worm, then tamed some more
pets and soon had: 2 Mater liches, Archy2, Black Naga, Black Dragon

Patito reached experience-level 11 (foocobi) and marked the Vibrating
square by reading a ?oLight.

Orcus: Patito gave a !oGL and a !oSpeed to Archy2. Orcus escaped a few
times, but had no chance against Archy2. Then Patito lost one of his
Mater liches (he was confused by an umber hulk and died in a
pet-combat).

On Orcus Level were stairs to Vlad's tower.

Vlad's Tower: Patito got the "oLs and deposited some stuff in a box to
get only burdened. Vlad was no problem. Patito tried to sit on his
throne and he was granted a wish! He wished for ?oCharging (the only
scroll Patito never found in the entire dungeon). After that he
polypiled a bit and got a spellbook of charm monster, a magic
marker(1:36), wands of enlightenment and cancellation. He decided to go
back up, buy candles and to use up a few more /oPoly charges.

Back to the Quest. Patito didn't have more patience to wait for foocubi
and wraith-corpses and quaffed 3 !oGL. (So he had only one left)
He wanted to get unburdened again, so he did some alchemy: 200 extra HP
and 5 !oGL. He dropped all spellbooks except charm monster and extra
healing. Dropped some wands, a pick axe, an expensive camera, a figurine
of a xan, enchanted some armor (and equipped the Archon with a +4 shield
of Reflection)

On the quest Patito found a !oGL, and a magic lamp (wished for c?oGeno)

Patito offered the Cyclops to solve the conflict peacefully. The Cyclops
should have listened. Patito took the staff of Aesculapius which seemed
to have a strange malfunction. Instead of healing creatures it drained
life from them.

Patito used the last charge of the last \oPoly to turn useless stuff
into even more useful stuff. After that he used all
\oCreateMonster-charges and sacrificed a bit. Got the intrinsic speed
(ugh.) and a spellbook of cure sickness. After that he identified the
charges of all his wands.

Then he powered up the pets a bit, switched his +4 dwarven helm against
a +6 elven leather helm and gave it to Archy2.
Archy2: XP:37 AC:-25 fast, invisible, +0 Sunsword, unicorn horn, "oLs
Arch Lich: XP:37 AC:-34 unicorn, "oLs

Down to the Wizard. Patito opened the Wizard's chamber with a \oDigging
and met him for the first time. The pets needed a lot of time to get rid
of him.
Down at the VS: After a special invocation suddenly new down-stairs
appeared.

In Moloch's Sanktum Archy2 behaved like a berserker. 3 wraiths left
corpses, and Patito's black dragon ate them all. The Wizard stood next
to Molochs altar, but this time Archy2 got rid of him a lot faster.

Patito here made an inventory-checkup, got unburdened and took a few
useful items out of the bag into the main inventory.

So Patito was ready for the run. But the Wizard doesn't like fast
movement and immideately stopped him on the way to the stairs. Archy2
made a god job, but the black dragon just didn't want to stop eating all
those corpses that lay around. After a while he was ready to go up.
Upstairs again: Wizard-alert. While Patito went to the stairs his
Arch-Lich steped onto a level-teleporter. Bye-bye Lichy. Hope to see you
soon. (his cold-attacks never caused serious damage anyway).

Dlvl:43 The wizard again... suddenly Yeenoghu appears and gets beaten a
lot by Archy2. Yeenoghu escapes upstairs. Archy2 kills 2 wizards, but
somehow the amulet is gone. After a while the wizard comes back again
and his corpse leaves the amulet. Upstairs: (every time Patito wanted to
go upstairs the black dragon was ALWAYS eating and the wizard usually
used the lunch-time to show up, so Patito decided to leave the dragon
behind)

Demogorgon!!! Upstairs still was Yeenoghu (seriously wounded and
fleeing), another wizard (I don't know how often this guy
double-troubled). The Wizard double-troubled again and while Patito was
walking to the next staircase another purple & showed up. Oh no.
Demogorgon. (I had hoped that this would never happen). Luckily Patito
had made a good inventory-checkup in Moloch's Sanktum.

After some fire graffiti the floor looked a lot better. He dropped the
amulet and prepared for a level-teleport, but changed his mind and threw
a scroll with a nice scary poem towards the downstairs. It hit Demo on
the head, but didn't hurt him. Hm. This demon is poetry resistant. After
some turns the path was free and Patito stepped on the space where the
scary scroll fell.
The Amulet!! I forgot the Amulet! Too late. And of course:

Demogorgon picks up the Amulet of Yendor.--More--

Patito then built a road of Elbereth to both staircases.
Ok. Demogorgon wants it the hard way. Picked up the dragon from
downstairs and caused conflict. And immediately Patito's dragon died.
Used a wand to revive him. Yeenoghu and the 2 wizards fled upstairs.
Then Patito blocked the upstairs and the dragon finally killed Demo.
Demo left a !oHealing and the Amulet. Another demon had lost a bullwhip
and soon Archy2 had a +6 Sunsword.

Patito decided to keep the brave dragon (black dragon lvl 25).

After Demo was gone Patito chased Yeenoghu a few levels. Sometimes the
amulet was stolen. After Orcus-Town Yeenoghu was finally killed, then
Patito got about 4 times teleported down below Orcus-Town. Patito gave
his last !oGL to Archy2(lvl 38). And the Wizard reached lvl 40, so
Patito had to drain him with the staff of Aesculapius.

Patito met the wizard never again in the DoD.

On Dlvl 5 a peaceful Arch Lich showed up.

Last inventory checkup on Dlvl 1.
On the Plane of earth Patito drained the Wizard with the staff of
Aesculapius. The ?oGD revealed a portal, that was just one zap of a
/oDigging away.

On the Plane of Air the portal was far away. Patito used a steam vortex
as a teleportaion device and evaded all Air Elementals.

On the Plane of Fire the portal was only 10 steps away.

On the Plane of Water the Wizard showed up. As usual the staff made a
good job before Archy2 finished him quickly.

So Patito finally arrived on the Astral Plane, where a small Guardian
Angel joined him. The Amulet of ESP revealed that Famine was in the
middle and Death on the right side.

Patito chose to visit Death first. The altar was chaotic.
Next middle: Famine - the altar was lawful
Here he met also: Dean the Collector (an archeologist), Mike the Canon
(a priest) and Kevin the Necromancer (a wizard).

So Patito had to visit Pestilence. Somehow the brave black dragon was
killed and sadly he revived wild. Patito also met Ken the Traveler, a
tourist with the greased +8 fire brand.

Finally Patito reached the right altar. Before he sacrificed the Amulet
he had some fun and used up a few special scrolls (he had used all his
magic markers to write these scrolls). ;-) And finally sacrificed the
Amulet of Yendor on the right altar.

You produce a strange whistling sound.

You're kidding, right?
I suppose the S-o'-Aesc could drain levels to where he'd no longer be
so magic resistant as to resist taming. How were his HP afterwards?

Heh. My next wizmode test will involve a blessed figurine of Pestilence :-)

Not to diminish your other accomplishments, but ascending with
Pestilence as a pet is the coolest thing I've seen ever, I think.

Would it work with Stormy, I wonder?

First of all I want to say that I am really impressed!
You are really good with animals I must say :)

Still I have a question. How come it says you never genocided while there
are 3 species genocided?
Or would it poil to say how you did that?

Stupendous. Congrats.

Does pacifist exclude zapping wands of Fire/Death/Striking/Drain Life,
etc? Did you do this at all?

They are extinct. Meaning he killed them all.

(Or rather, his pets did)

Some species have a limit of the number ever generated: for many species
that limit is 120, I don't know the details.

Does it get strangled by the leash or something?

Oh yes, trapdoors in Gehennom are ugly.

Pet instakill is a sad and terrible thing... My tourist lost a
master lich pet to a trapper. Not that liches make very good pets,
since all they do is cover the enemy with frost.

Pet Archons seem to be fantastic. Never had one yet, though.

Ah! You could have nightmares with this.

Wow! I can't quite believe it. Pestilence for a pet! That rocks!!
I didn't know it was even possible. What are the odds of his
resisting the ?oTaming, I wonder?

I suppose you could try taming Rodney himself for your next
APAP :)

A tame Demogorgon sounds like fun, as well. (I'd like to see
him in action against Pestilence :) ).

[snip]

What can I say? I'm stunned, awed, thunderstruck. Maybe in
another million years (give or take a few hundred thousand)
I'll think of doing a pacifist myself.

And taming Pestilence... I'm going to have dreams about that.
(Although I'd prefer to kill him over and over and over... the
horrible creature assisted me in a YASD last night)

Congratulations!

Ever wondered how many ways are there to kill monsters?

Spoilers below!

A pacifist is a character who has never directly killed a monster. Monsters
killing each other at your behest is OK. Softening a monster up so that
other monsters can kill it more easily is OK. Only actually being directly
responsible for its death is bad.

There are many ways to kill a monster. They are, in no particular order:

* making a cloud of poison gas that kills a monster
* reflecting a gaze-attacking monster's gaze (eg, Medusa) that kills it
* crushing a monster under the Castle drawbridge
* kicking a monster to death
* creating an explosion (eg, blowing up a gas spore) that kills a monster
* being polymorphed into a trapper/rock piercer/etc and falling on a monster
and killing it
* stoning a monster to death (eg, when polymorphed into a cockatrice)
* stoning a monster which then attempts to unstone itself (eg, by drinking
acid) but the attempt kills the monster due to damage from the acid.
* being polymorphed into a monster that has a "passive attack" (eg, an acid
blob automatically splashes acid on anyone who attacks it) and thereby
killing a monster that attacked you.
* being polymorphed into a mind flayer and mind-blasting a monster to death
* being stuck inside a monster while some god is angry at you and having a
bolt of lightning or disintegration beam come down from the heavens killing
the monster
* turning some undead can kill them
* reading a scroll of earth that drops a rock on a monster, thereby killing
it
* throwing holy water on an undead or werecreature, thereby killing it
* throwing acid on a monster, killing it
* polymorphing a monster that dies of system shock
* draining the life out of a monster entirely
* cancelling a monster can sometimes kill it
* there are too many wand-based attacks that kill monsters to list easily
* steering a steed into water/lava where it can't survive
* in some rare cases dismounting a steed can kill it
* stealing gloves from a glove-wearing monster who is holding a cockatrice
corpse
* creating an earthquake that causes a monster holding a cockatrice corpse
to fall into a chasm
* making a chameleon in the form of a stoning-resistant monster which is
holding a cockatrice corpse become a non-stoning resistant monster. (I
don't understand this one fully. Can someone explain?)
* badly failing to untrap a monster stuck in a bear trap can kill it.
* poisoning a monster to death
* burning a straw golem to death
* erasing the spell that keeps a clay golem alive
* rusting an iron golem to death
* decaying a wood or leather golem to death
* exploding while polymorphed into an exploding monster, thereby killing
another monster
* eating a live monster (while polymorphed into a purple worm), killing it
* flashing light at a gremlin, killing it.

oh, and I almost forgot:

* hitting a monster with a weapon until dead. How dull.

Hey, someone want to add that list to the spoilers?

If a chameleon is polymorphed into a golem, and it picks up a cockatrice
corpse, it will immediately become petrified into a stone golem. If you
subsequently zap a wand of polymorph at it, causing it to become an orc, then
it immediately becomes a statue of an orc. See?

Holy cow, they really DO think of everything... :-)

No kidding.

Correct, but the MR=100 doesn't change. The chances to succeed with a
scroll are IIRC (10/11)*(10-Lvl)%. I don't remember the exact HP
(35-50), but there was never a danger of killing him with one hit.

No. Only cursed leashs strangle pets.

Demogorgon can't be tamed. Famine can be tamed, but as a Healer Patito
was primarily interested in "taming Pestilence".

The special attacks of the riders and some of Demo's attacks aren't
implemented in monster-monster combat (mhitm.c). So, there won't happen
much if they fight each other.

My second almost-ascension was a Valk that got poisoned by Pestilence.
What you now need is:
- a death by drawbridge
- dying surrounded by 5 Archons on the plane of Air
- .. lava, eels, Yeenoghu, Master Kaen, ...

I think that it has been answered what a pacifist is allowed to do.

I didn't use wands or spells to hurt creatures, and weapons (except in
rare cases the staff of Aesculapius) only accidentally.

Thanx. But after Demogorgon that wasn't too difficult.

sure

Your spoilers were really useful to me. In all my previous games I never
used Elbereth and only once met Demogorgon. So I didn't know too much
about all that.

Demogorgon as a pacifist would indeed be incredibly difficult, sure.

But Pestilence as a pet is just so _cool_...

Hell, I may have to try it sometime...
