Zoinks...Torment-W has found the Blackmarket. I have no clue what this
is all about. Am I in danger? Are all the prices this bad? What should
I do here? What are all the peaceful creatures for?

No inherent danger although the creatures are paid to be
protective of the loot. Prices are intentionally bad but if
you are in need of a specific item or simply want to identify
any stuff you haven't run across previously it can be helpful.
It is also rumored that there are a couple ways to abscond
with millions in stolen loot.

In article <19991011134513...@ng-fs1.aol.com>,

Here's my $.02 about the Black Market:

One-eyed Sam has a lot of cash, so you can sell him your identified
gems.

Sometimes eggs will hatch into baby dragons, which will pick up any
gold they find and carry it until you kill them (outside the shop).

Be careful when you're inside the shop not to destroy scrolls of
scare monster by accident.

Sam also has the following items in his inventory:
Heavily enchanted speed boots, GDSM, and a [SofReflect, Thiefbane,
and a "AoLifeSaving. It's tricky to steal the "AoLS, but if you
kill him you can take the other stuff. Sam can sometimes identify
and/or uncurse stuff for you.

My strategy is usually to sell all my gems, drop all my gold,
buy a slew of identify scrolls, bless them, then use them to identify
as many rings, scrolls, potions, wands, amulets, and so on as I can.
Then I clear out the area around the door to the shop, put all the
useful stuff into my blessed Wallet of Perseus, sell it near the door,
then I use a pet horse and a leash or magic whistle to retrieve
it. Sometimes I just use jumping boots to exit the store, but I
almost never fight Sam.

Happy Hacking.

Good idea for a future game..I'm about ready to run on Gehennom tho,
and I've ditched my gold and gems.

Ingenious! Presumably, other acceptable unpeaceful creature who liked
gold would too (dwarf, et al)

Thought of that. :) There was 1, right up by the door. Left autopickup
off the whole time...no way I wanna get a promising wizard into
trouble this way.

I noticed the GDSM and "AoLS when I probed him, but don't recall
seeing him with a shield or speed boots. He was wielding Thiefbane.

I got a couple uncurses from him...

Hmm, well I raided Ludios and ended up with 67k, and got my 9th & last
protection point that way. I piled up all the unid'ed stuff & id'ed
it. I did buy water potions, id scrolls, a stethoscope, a book of id &
a ?SoGen (the 1st i'd seen all game).
I didn't think about robbing stuff...and the only pets I had were 2
water elementals on one trip, and 2 djinn & a fire elemental on the
2nd. None of these pets seemm willing to pick up items. The fire
elemental managed to wake up the 2 trolls, Thomas & William, & start a
bit of a row with them. I didn;t look back to see if they'd become
hostile...

Indeed, this has been a big help! Slash'EM requires a rather deep
ingenuity...no wonder all my charachters but this one have never even
seen the Quest :p
