I had a hard time getting going as I couldn't find early sources of
either magic resistance or reflection. Unwilling to do the quest or
Ludios (which appeared at a quite early level in this game) without
them, I eventually had what I thought was a clever idea. I had already
blown my usual no-polyself conduct by stepping on a polytrap, and in
the meantime had come upon a ring of polymorph control. So I became a
gray dragon and laid some eggs (one of the main reasons I always play
female characters, just in case!). It took forever to raise my babies
to adulthood, and in fact all but one died before maturing. The final
one I fed to a fire elemental, and, what do you know, no scales. Back
to the drawing board. Eventually I was able to rev-geno more gray
dragons and get scales that way.
With magic resistance I felt confident enough to go for the castle,
and wished for an amulet of reflection there. I could then go back and
do the quest (wand of death - easy), Ludios, etc. with confidence. A
number of altars had appeared before this time, including a cross-
aligned temple, which helped in gaining protection without having to
go all the way back to Minetown. I got Frost Brand but gave up on
waiting for Grayswandir, and settled for Frosty plus my original
katana (enchanted +7/+6 respectively). I figured the katana did more
damage than a saber other than the silver damage, and while two-
weaponing would allow me to use both weapons at expert skill.
I found many scrolls of genocide and so eliminated L h ; , my usual
set when not playing no-gen conduct, and disenchanters. Wanted to
bribe Asmodeus but dropped and forgot my change; he disappeared for
awhile, digging down whenever I got close. Did bribe Baalzebub. Didn't
manage to kill Orcus before he depleted his wand of death, but I'd
already found many more (and not just in the quest), helpful when
Rodney reappeared twice before I even made it out of the Sanctum.
Found a spellbook of charm monster and managed to charm a couple of
purple worms at one point, though one turned into an iron golem (not
bad, till he fell through a hole) and another died somewhere on the
way back up.
When I found a cloak of magic resistance in Gehennom I decided to rev-
geno silver dragons and change my armor. I was gunshy after the last
oh-so-close Samurai attempt, and wanted to wear an amulet of life
saving instead of reflection. Fortunately I didn't need it; the first
altar visited on Astral was the right one, and I offered for my 14th
ascension, 13th and final NAO class. Whew! Time for a Nethack
vacation...

Oh, well and splendidly achieved!

Spiffy ... was 17 your highest XL attained?

Aw, thanks! I wondered if anyone would visit my homepage when I posted
in the demographics thread ;-)
- funcrunch (and congrats on your impending nuptials!)

Thanks - And yeah, I guess it was! Not enough wraiths (I let the
purple worms eat some) or gain level potions I guess, and I didn't
feel like dancing with incubi...

You got me curious so I went through 26 of my NAO ascensions.
Just over 15% are at XL 17, and another 11.5% are XL 15-16.
Most common XL is 18 (27% of ascensions), and over half (53%) are XL18
or lower.
All are XL 15-22 except for one at XL24 (a priest, ton of wraiths
dropped on the quest) and once at XL 26 (a ranger, I think I stumbled
across a big graveyard). I don't play particularly fast or slow in
general; those were 40K and 36K turn ascensions respectively.
Also, max HP range from 184 to 435. 50% are 236 or lower. 29% are
over 300. Only the one is over 400 (an XL19 dwarven Valk, he found a
bones of hellstrom's with lots of potions in in to alchemize; 31K
turns).

40K turns would be lightning-fast for me ;-) I'm a terribly
inefficient player, but I get the job done. I normally get over XP20,
but saw no reason to try in this game; I got my last intrinsic,
stealth, at XP15 (though it was stolen by a gremlin - thank you for
not stealing PR) and got my extra HP through alchemy, so the only real
advantage of leveling further would have been improved spellcasting.

Well, yes, for me too. Fastest I can find is just over 61K, slowest 92K.
XL usually ends up in the twenties though I ascended a level 15 W with
124 max HP.

Status of Raisse (piously neutral): Level 8 HP 63(67) AC -3, fast.
Back in the day I think mine were around 80k turns, but I only
ascended a few times (a half dozen?) before moving on to other games.
(Probably it was back to Civilization.) I always want to add some
"flair" to the game (hopefully not the Office Space kind) so I'll
spend/waste time collecting stuff or whatever. For example, right now
I have a caveman (taking a break from the healers) who I think should
have a good collection of elven spears. And of course later he should
have a stack of silver spears. Duh.
Heh, still in the mines, the black dragon breathes a disintegration
blast! The blast of disintegration hits you! DYWYPI? Time for another
caveman.
