Just finished one of my longest games, turncount-wise (>150K), in
memory. I'm glad it's over! This was an exercise in inefficiency,
aided and abetted by an unhelpful RNG. Never had so much trouble
ascending a silly Barbarian before!

First of all, I had a hell of a time finding either reflection or
magic resistance. No magic lamps in Minetown, no amulet in Sokoban.
Bags of holding up the wazoo, but that didn't help when I faced going
on my quest without those two key items. The trolls and ogres had a
field day zapping me and exploding my rings and wands, but I managed
to retrieve my (mostly worthless) quest item and the Bell at least. I
finally got magic resistance upon slaying a gray dragon on dungeon
level 20.

On the plus side, altars were a-plenty, including a co-aligned temple
in Minetown. I eventually received every nonaligned artifact weapon
and every chaotic weapon except the (nameable) elven ones (me being an
orc), but of course the one I wanted most, Frost Brand, came dead
last. (I used FB two-weaponed with silver saber until near endgame,
when I switched to Stormy.) Unfortunately I prayed too soon at one
point and lost nine hard-earned points of protection. Annoyed and
still desperate for reflection, I started a pudding farm at one altar
and kept at it until I got a magic lamp, which finally granted me an
amulet of reflection.

Then I set about gathering all the cash required to buy my protection
back. Never found Ludios - thanks, RNG. Plus, due to general idiocy I
had quaffed and wraithed myself to exp. level 22; protection,
especially without finding Ludios, was now going to be prohibitively
expensive. In the Valley temple, I took Stormbringer out of my bag and
threw it up in the air six times. Bought five AC points, charmed a
dragon, had him kill the priest of Moloch, picked up the cash (and his
robe), level-ported back to Minetown, bought the rest.

I figured I could get my levels back with blessed potions of full
healing as I'd read that in a spoiler somewhere. Unfortunately this
only worked for three of the levels. And I probably could have drained
only three and still had enough cash as it turned out. Not very smart.
Though my hit points hadn't suffered too much, my power and
spellcasting ability certainly had. I know, Barbarians, especially
orcish ones, have no business casting spells anyway, but I really
wanted magic missile. And thanks to the RNG relenting and giving me an
extremely successful polypile in the Castle, I'd managed to get a helm
of brilliance and gauntlets of dexterity with a single zap.

I did a bit of alchemy and eventually felt confident enough to descend
into Gehennom. Though the game had already lasted twice the length of
some of my ascensions, I fully explored each level to try to get more
potions for alchemy, among other things. I also collected every last
wand of teleportation, which had been scarce in previous games. I only
managed to find one scroll of genocide, unlike in previous games where
I'd wanted to play genoless. Eliminated mind flayers first, later
wrote off liches, and finally sea monsters immediately after entering
the Plane of Water; I wanted the points for offing eels and krakens
with magic missile wherever safe to do so.

In addition to the numerous teleport wands, I'd found four rings of
telecontrol. Since I'd already lost polyself conduct to an early
polytrap, once I finally get a ring of poly control I locked the Orcus
Town temple door, stripped, and prepared to Xornify myself. Both tins
of chameleon meat eaten instead produced "You feel like a new orc!" On
the plus side, I got my levels back. On the minus, I lost several
points of Constitution. And of course, since I had teleportitis, I had
to keep wearing that ring.

I charmed an assortment of purple worms and other beasties along the
way, but none survived terribly long. Rodney was moderately annoying,
especially as wand of death kept missing and I was short on charges.
He managed to steal the Amulet on Fire when I was right next to the
portal, which was nervewracking, but I got it back. Water was easier
once I geno'd things that could drown me. Took off conflict for Astral
so I could get my pet Angel; put the ring back on as soon as he died.
Didn't use jumping (burdened and spell forgotten), but teleported
things out of my way as much as possible. Second altar visited was the
right one, and I offered for my tenth NAO victory, second in a row
for the June tournament, earning my both-genders-ascension trophy
"Birdie with bells on". And as of this moment, I am number one on the
tournament's "Most extinctionist" list with 4684 kills. I do not
expect this particular honor to last very long at all however!

Congratulations :)

Sorry I'm not very experienced with Stormbringer and how you can
use it. Do you mean that you dropped Stormbringer to lose level-
drain resistance against all the Vampires, Vamp Lords, Wraiths,
etc in VotD, or are you actually able to hit yourself with
Stormbringer
by throwing it at yourself somehow?

Burdened on astral? As my friend sweet Rose likes to say in her
southern
accent: "Are you NUTS?" (although you did end up doing just fine while
burdened, but still I would have dropped that tinning kit and
spellbooks
at the least just before entering the portal but to each their own!)

Very nice achievement! I noticed your points skyrocketed after this
ascension. Go Team RGRN! :)

Anything you throw straight up, '<', will come back down and hit you
on the head. Being hit with a weapon this will have its usual attack
effects, as long as you are not wearing a helmet.

From what funcrunch wrote, I'd say six XL were lost this way. That
should make buying divine protection cheaper by $2400 per purchase.

Yep, that's what I did - and it worked even though I was wearing a
helmet. Never thought I'd intentionally level-drain myself, but it was
handy in a pinch! (I've used Fire Brand in such a manner before to
burn away green slime.)

I think there's only a couple of times I've been *not* burdened in the
endgame. If I were more mindful of noting at which turn I'd read the
books, I could have felt more comfortable dropping them - though of
course I realize I'd have precious little time to re-study them on
Astral! I'm just a packrat, but it hasn't stopped me from ascending
10x since January so...
