A little elven lass had a rather unusual experience during her
childhood: while she was on a school excursion to a wood close
to her village, a large winged beast of midnight colour
approached the group. While the children huddled in terror, the
teacher boldly (and very foolishly) attacked the great beast
with her umbrella. In response, the creature opened its maw and
spewed forth a thin stream of utterly black dust that caused the
old lady to vanish into thin air on the spot. Our little elf was
truly impressed by this feat - with a simple belch, the dragon
had achieved more than all the work she had put into a little
wax figurine of the loathed woman. She admired the beast and
instantly decided that she would be like it one day.

In spite of not being the brightest, she got apprenticed as a
wizard. She chose the name "Nightshade" and got a reputation of
silliness for wearing fake claws and fangs and treating her
wizard's cloak with black dye. She also took lessons in
fire-spitting, to emulate what she had heard of the winged
dragons. When she left the academy as a fully apprenticed wizard
she took along a potion of lamp oil, some water (for washing out
her mouth after fire-spitting sessions) and a drink that allowed
her to walk through the air - the closest she ever got to
flight. Then she set out to find a place where the creatures she
adored took abode, as she had heard that such an animal's skin
might allow their possessor to truly assume the beast's shape.

Eventually she learnt that the Dungeons of Doom held such
creatures. Since the cult of Anhur - of which she was a fully
initiated member - had been pestering her to enter this place to
collect some trinket for their god, she decided to look for her
destiny in that place. It was a dark and stormy... no, actually
not. The sun was just setting when she entered the dark
underground complex of the Dungeons.

She was rather disappointed: no dragons roamed the caves she
first explored, merely pathetic creatures like newts and
shambling corpses of vaguely canine/humanoid beings. She had
been trained to see a threat in every stranger, and in this
place it paid off - almost everyone she encountered seemed to
dislike her enough to try to kill her; fortunately, no-one
succeeded. Indeed, the dangers she overcame gave her ever more
confidence in her abilities. Nightshade explored many strange
places: a large lit room with a great number of small fountains
and historical statues, a large, irregular complex populated by
small and mostly harmless humanoids, a small tower full of large
stone blocks she had to push out of her way (and in the end she
found a magical amulet in this place which sent many dangerous
magics back to where they had come from). Some way beyond the
stairs to the small tower she learnt that a horrible Sorcerer
called the Dark One had stolen a valuable amulet from one of the
elder wizards who had been a teacher of her at the magic school.
She wasn't too eager to help the old fart, but she assumed that
she might somehow manage to profit from the deal.

In the next area of the dungeon, Nightshade detected a secret
room full of gold which also held a magical gate to the home of
the owner of the treasure, the castle of the mighty king
Croesus. In this area, she detected the object of her desire - a
black dragon. But as yet she was not able to skin it, so she did
what the old wizard wanted from her (and she even got to keep
the amulet the Dark One had stolen) and explored the dungeons
some more. Eventually she stepped out of a maze into a great
cave with a very high ceiling. In this cave sat a large mansion
with walls reaching all the way to the ceiling, surrounded by a
water-filled moat. But there was a drawbridge in one of the
walls, and after trying out some tunes on her harp Nightshade
had a lot of fun making her foes fall off the bridge or get
crushed between the drawbridge and the portcullis before
entering the stronghold.

She found a magical wand which allowed her to make a wish and
used it for a very special amulet. Now it was time to become
what she had wanted to be for years: the black dragon soon fell
to her magical arrows and she kept its hide, wore it and held
her snou^H^H^H^H mouth under the faucet of a sink. It didn't
take long before the water tasted truly strange and Nightshade
felt a change coming over herself - her face contorted, her
teeth grew into huge fangs, her skin merged with the dragon
hide, she grew wings and her hands and feet turned into massive
limbs armed with terrifying claws. Quickly she donned the
wished-for amulet to make her new shape stick and stayed in
dragon shape for the rest of her adventures. Some things still
needed to be done to make sure her life wouldn't be too
dangerous: she put on a ring which had the property to protect
her from holding magics and she read a scroll of annihilation to
wipe out a collection of creatures which could spell instant
death should she so much as touch them.

Life became very exciting in her new form: her bite and claws,
albeit formidable, were not quite powerful enough to rely on
them against many of the tougher foes. In addition, many
opponents could attack her in ways she was not prepared to deal
with, as her only "armour" was her scaly skin. But fortunately
she remembered that the horrible undead foes that can drain an
adventurer's life cannot stand the smell of a special sort of
onion, and used this knowledge to good effect. Most dangerous
foes fell to Nightshade's mighty spells of devastation or to her
destructive breath. She also had found a few scrolls which
creatures would not dare to walk onto, but couldn't make more of
them - she had to use these two scrolls very carefully.

A few very self-confident demons waylaid her, but Nightshade
just belched at them and they vanished into thin air. Only one
of them she did not treat like this, because she suspected he
might possess an object she wanted for herself - a most deadly
magic wand. With due care, Nightshade put an end to a very
senior blood-sucking undead and prepared for what she had
learned lay before her - the collection of the trinket Anhur
desired. An old sorcerer holding an item required for the ritual
granting Nightshade access to the treasure was mercilessly
slaughtered, and the gem-studded necklace taken from the dead
hands of a high priest of a foul traitor god. The god didn't
appreciate this and occasionally invoked a strange force holding
her back while she was busy trying to escape the dungeon, but
all these efforts were futile. Eventually she found the
staircase leading out of the dungeons of doom, but the trinket
she was still carrying transported her to a different plane. The
old wizard she had killed over his book appeared again, but
vanished the very next moment. Through four places she went and
eventually arrived at the gates of the heavenly realm itself,
where the holiest altars are placed. Here she prevailed in an
epic fight, searching out all the altars there were, killing
many dangerous foes and using a displacing magic to send away
those she could not handle (like a horrible brain-sucking beast
which wore an amulet that reflected her annihilating breath);
finally she found the True Sanctuary of Anhur and yielded the
item he had desired. As a reward, she was made immortal, to fly
the skies forever.

Congratulations!

I tested in explore mode and enchanting this doesn't boost your AC when
polymorphed. _I_ think it should, but I'm not the dev team.

Clever.

Wow. That is quite impressive.
