Wow, I've been waiting for this one for a long time... about a year and
a half, give or take. I think what surprised me most was how easy
everything was once I had all my equipment picked out. The Eye of
Awesome is almost broken (I never ran out of PW again until Astral),
and conflict definitely -is-. It makes any level where the enemies
come in hordes a cake walk, and I hadn't noticed because I hadn't
gotten to any really crowded levels before.

I started by leaving my kitten behind, since it didn't seem interested
in being useful, and heading into the mines in search of AC and food.
My secondary spell was create monster, so I was all set for altar
camping. I found a wand of wishing, got myself 2 blessed scrolls of
charging, +2 SDSM, and +2 fireproof speed boots. In Minetown I tried
to sac for Magicbane, but Anhur must not have been paying attention,
'cuz I didn't get jack for ages. I offed the watch and the shopkeepers
(minus Izchak - I didn't even steal his stuff), bought protection, and
lost my spare wishes when a hill giant broke my glass WoW with his
WoStriking. As a side note, I think the game would be improved if
shopkeepers were significantly tougher - trying to outwit them is fun
up until you know what works and what doesn't, but you can kill them
almost at will if you have magic missile and reflection (and with only
a little difficulty if you instead have magic resistance), which makes
the whole thing kind of pointless. Anyway, after that I remembered to
use containers. Sokoban had an amulet of reflection (I swear it must
be guaranteed if you've already found a source of reflection), but I
found a bag of holding soon anyway, and managed to never blow it up.

I wanted Magicbane before the Quest, so I went around converting
altars in the main dungeon and sacfesting. At some point I ended up
with another WoW, a magic lamp, and a water demon wish, which together
got me a helm of brilliance, gauntlets of dexterity, a t-shirt, the
Master Key of Thievery (which was actually after the quest; but
whatever), a amulet of life saving (I later found more), and an amulet
of magical breathing. The Amulets spoiler led me to believe I could
eat it to become unbreathing, but it must not have worked because I
wasn't unbreathing when I ascended. The Quest was easy, and with Eye
and Bell in hand I descended to the castle, stoning Medusa with my
reflection on the way.

I didn't want to deal with the drawbridge, so I smashed it from afar
and flew around back (as a master mind flayer, wearing water walking
boots in case I changed back). I wore conflict and threw around MM,
and in retrospect I think this is the other wand I was thinking of
when I wrote the paragraph above. I went down to the Valley, decided
to beef up, and used the Eye's oh-so-handy levelport to set up a stash
in Sokoban, where there are fewer interruptions. I enchanted up my
armor, made holy water, and prepared scrolls of gold detection (and
cursed scrolls of confuse monster, because at the time I didn't have
any forgotten spells to confuse myself with and wanted to make sure I
could get confused on the Planes). I sacced a little more in hopes of
getting Stormy, but Anhur was screwing around and I gave up - I was
wielding Magicbane all the way to the High Altar. I did a little
nurse dancing to raise my HP, too.

By the time I killed Vlad (who is almost pointlessly easy - why not
make him more formidable?) I was nearly untouchable, but I genocided
some stuff just to be safe - L because summons are annoying (although
with conflict and -37AC (-47 in my preferred master mind flayer form)
they were hardly much to worry about), c because I'm prone to stupid
footrice related instadeaths, and ; because I wasn't confident that I
actually had unbreathing like the amulet spoiler said I did, which
turned out to be a good thing. I experimented with mounts, but I kept
killing them with reflected magic missiles so I decided to remain
petless. The Wizard was no trouble. He always went down in a single
death ray - no fuss, no mess, and I never lost a single artifact.

When I actually got the Amulet of Yendor from the High Priest of
Moloch, I stopped for a minute just to enjoy it. I dropped it so I
could read its flavor text, and then remembered I should #name it so
that I could find it easily if Rodey got his grubby mitts on it. I
named it Dave, and Dave and I went up through Gehennom. As I was
chaotic, the mysterious force was no problem (which I don't understand
- the Amulet and Moloch are unaligned. Why would they affect different
alignments differently?). I made liberal use of teleport, and made up
for the nutrition loss by consuming the occasional brain. Meeting no
resistance, I proceeded to the first floor of the Dungeons of Doom,
where I quaffed a cursed potion of gain level to ensure that Dave was
still, you know, Dave. Rodney came to wish me luck on Earth, and I
gave him my best wishes as well, in the form of a sweet little beam of
negative energy. I took the spellbook of digging, got confused, trap-
detected with gold detection, and headed off for the portal. Air was a
bit tight, and the elementals actually managed to knock me out of my
mind flayer form. I don't think any spoilers actually mention it, but
being a flying monster is just as good as having levitation for moving
about on Air (I took off my ring for a few moments to check). I
decided to just 'port all the elementals away and run for the portal
to Fire, which worked. I was low on PW from Dave's parasitic
tendencies so I couldn't poly back into a master mind flayer, but it
hardly mattered. I just floated past some balrogs over to the portal
and headed to Water. Water was even easier; I just levitated over to
the portal's bubble and jumped in.

Astral took me by surprise. The enemies had more HP than I was used
to, but couldn't hit worth crap. With -37AC, half spell and half
physical damage, the most HP I lost on Astral came from getting
blasted by the Master Key of Thievery when I used it to pick the locks
on the doors. Anhur tried to be useful by sending me a guardian angel,
but he was unexpectedly weak so I just ignored him. I replaced my ring
of polycontrol with conflict, my ring of levitation with free action,
and tried the right door. Death came for me, and fell to two magic
missiles. I didn't realize his touch of death was so pointless; 2hp
per hit, with a chance of doing nothing? The right altar was Thoth's,
so I went to the center. It was Ptah's, and Famine was guarding it. He
never touched me; my wand of death did nicely for him. I think the
Tourist had Firebrand and I considered killing him for it to get more
points, but he had a ton of HP and I eventually just walked away to
the left altar. On my way in I death-rayed a lot of priests, and
Pestilence, and I think I killed Death some more. I got to the Altar,
savored my victory for a moment, and offered.

I then realized I couldn't cut and paste the entire window anymore on
the Windows terminal, so I took a screenshot instead. These are the
final stats.

You offer the Amulet of Yendor to Anhur... //I was really hoping it
would say "You offer Dave to Anhur...//
An invisible choir sings, and you are bathed in radiance... //What?
Anhur the Great and Chaotic Lazy Bum has invisible choirs and
radiance? That seems more like a Lawful shtick.//
The Voice of Anhur thunders: "Congratulations, mortal!"
"In return for thy service, I grant thee the gift of immortality!"
You ascend to the status of Demigoddess... //At one point I became male
through a polyself accident, and had to polypile for an amulet of
change. It didn't seem right to become a Demigod when I'd started out
female.//

You have to be careful with killing shopkeepers
if you're not playing chaotic (you lose telepathy and
2 points of luck). This usually makes me reluctant
to kill them. Plus you lose a useful source of price-
identification. (Which I guess you don't have to
worry too much about as a wizard.)

You only get a 1 in 5 chance of getting an intrinsic
from eating an amulet:

http://www.steelypips.org/nethack/343/amul-343.html

"If the EAT field is Y, then it is possible to obtain an
effect permanently by polymorphing into a metallivore
(rock mole, rust monster, or xorn) and eating the
amulet. There is only a 1/5 chance of obtaining the
effect this way ("Magic spreads through your body
as you digest the amulet.")."

Why did you bring so much gold to the Planes?

True enough. I suppose that by the time you've converted an altar to
raise luck at, there's no point in worrying about whether or not
shopkeepers are balanced, since you can altar-camp indefinitely until
you find something you want anyway.

Still, tougher shopkeepers might be worth looking into.

Heh. I must've missed that and skipped right to the amulet
descriptions. Ah well; it's good to know for future reference.

Because adventurers should always take home all the treasure they can
carry! It would be a mortal sin to let all that gold sit with some
priest who never leaves the dungeon. If I don't get to keep the Amulet
of Yendor, I might as well have something to show for myself.

Well, besides immortality, which probably isn't all it's cracked up to
be.

There are other ways to easily clear really large numbers of monsters.
A wielded cockatrice corpse is remarkably effective if you can do it
around a corner where you generally always have the first attack.

Or:
1. break a wand of teleportation.
2. bread a wand of death, *preferably* while wearing an amulet of life-
saving, as dying is rather inconvenient.
