Has anyone here ever had a streak where you just couldn't get anything
going before suffering a very early YAS/AD? Because I could use some
advice on breaking one. (Taking a break may not help, because I more or
less did immediately before this streak of bad luck.)

Right now, I'm working on elven wizards, because I seem to have more
success with them overall (read: get deeper before dying).
Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get any of them to a viable point.
Of my past 12 attempts, none have made it to Sokoban. Went into the
Mines early in some of them (either the early levels were lit or I had
a light source with me) hoping to get daggers/mithril, but they still
didn't help. Once I made it to Minetown, decided to visit the temple to
BUC-test my stuff, and died to a giant ant *in the doorway* (granted,
it was my fault being stressed, but I didn't want anything using my
stuff against me). In my most recent game, I lost my cat to a falling
rock trap in the first five turns (and the starting room), and only
made it another 100 or so before I died (to a sewer rat, for extra
irony).

I know someone out there is getting a lot of RNG favor, because I'm
certainly not. Oh RNG, what'd I do to anger you, and what do I have to
offer to mollify you?

When I hit a patch like that it is usually due to a stylistic
mismatch. Most often I am trying to play a weak finesse role
as though it were a melee type. Melee seems to be my default
style so changing to something strong, stupid and durable like a
Caveman for a while can get me better results...

Of course it was, if you're stressed grid bugs hit like soldier ants, and soldier ants hit like Mumaks.

The way I play a wizard: hit what you can (read: what doesn't kill you in few turns) in melee with the quarterstaff until you're lvl5. Put on any uncursed armor, even metal, you're not going to use spells for a while anyways. When lvl5, find a dagger (preferably elven) and hit with it until you're expert. Hoard stacking elven daggers to throw and bless-enchant them to +3. Let your pet grow, poly it, engrave Elbereth every time you need it and then some. Do alchemy for more HP (dip n healing into speed -> dip n extra healing into gain lvl -> dip n full healing into holy water -> profit!).

Get magicbane and you're done until the quest, then get crowned for infinite rechargeable /oDeath, stash everything in Soko lvl1 and use the Eye for fun and profit throughout the whole of Nom... and don't forget to get conflict and levitation for the endgame. That's it! Have fun!

Which is why I like to Elbereth the ants. Grid bugs are of minimal
threat since Wizards start with an MC3 cloak (and even when they get
through it, it's only 1 damage, which I can usually heal naturally
before another grid bug zaps me).

Already do that (at least until I find a non-cursed dagger, which I
can practice on stuff like lichens and fog clouds).

I always pet- or altar-test armor I find, trying on anything that's
not cursed. Metal armor can get problematic, though, if I start with
a nice disabling/utility spell at 0% failure, like sleep....

Main issue is getting to the Quest (not doing the Quest; it's a near-
pushover, especially if I block the stairs on the Goal level). Of
course, both times I did it, I later suffered from Death By Boredom
(TM) -- once at the Castle, again at the Valley.

Heh, as far as wizards go, I'd say the main goal in the early game are, in order of importance:

- Find something to eat.
- Let your pet grow / Get more pets (be patient with polytraps)
- Get low AC,
- Get a wish, be it blessed magic lamp, blessed smoky potion, a throne, early WoW... I've been reliably getting at least 1 early wish every other game. Can't hurt to bless a lamp and you can always find at least 1 holy water to multiply and can afford to lose 1 to bless smoky potions (odds are initially the same of a throne, lowered when a djinn has already appeared). And when you get it, it WILL be blessed greased +2 SDSM.
- Sacrifice until you get Magicbane.

Well, actually, making a break is what I'd suggest. In my case it may
be some bad mood that results in sloppy play. Killing a character and
immediately restarting another one usually doesn't help in my case.
If I wait a few days (or more if necessary) before I continue to play
another game things often evolve better it seems. Sometimes I watch a
couple games on NAO, good players as well as bad players; just to get
aware again in what pitfalls one can get if inattentive. But sometimes
I may have really bad luck as well. To keep cool and persevere the bad
situation, making the best of it, not becoming desperate, is the key.
A psychological issue, I suppose.

Well, I recall a recent bad streak of games where I finally got a
Valkyrie who slashed through mines and whatnot; only to run into a
floating eye. I lacked the necessary thoughtfulness. Sometime it's
better to play a weak character and play especially cautious.

Heh! - Speakinf of irony; reminds me what I posted in March...

Click! Fritz triggers a rolling boulder trap.
The boulder hits Fritz!
Fritz is killed!
You are hit by a boulder!
You die...

Feel better now? :-)

Just try to ignore the RNG. - Convert to the Flying Spaghetti Monster!
