I have just ascended a 8-conduct pacifist survivor on NAO. In short, I
ate and wrote freely but kept all other tracked conducts.

This game features several personal firsts: Throne farming as a
strategic tool. An athame from an arch-lich. Needing Vlad's water
walking boots. First ascension on a public server, mainly because I
don't enjoy hitting escape after every action. Nearly it would have
been my only pacifist ascension without a magic whistle.

The 23d run (after fiddling with the config file) proved successful.
On six earlier attempts, I had lost pacifist conduct, four times my
pet had died, six times I had not had the armor and health points to
survive, and the remaining six were YASD.

More than others, this game felt like checking off a list. The first
points were food from Sokoban and levels from the Oracle. Mine town
was a triple bones file - both the loot and the dumplogs were a great
boost. Two XP1 protection runners had been saving healing potions for
heaven - I sure felt like a tank when they doubled my max HP later,
after uncursing and alchemy. A polytrap below mine town finally
provided me with strong, non-eating pets, solving my food problems. I
was very relieved when my last (uncursed) scroll of remove curse
finally made me holy water. Luckily, I found a throne to #loot for
wands of create monsters etc. Reflection came by quite late - a shop
on level 21 had a scroll of genocide. Dudley, wishing for silver DSM,
once got told by a djinny "some assembly required". Luckily, genocide
scrolls come with a fail-safe manual at Wikihack. The only useful
thing in the remaining Dungeons of Doom was a spellbook of charm
monster. I could neither cross water nor defeat the purple liches at
the Castle, but I could level-teleport into the Valley. So my level 8
wizard tried to charm wraiths and got horribly stuck between ghosts.
After much pulling of hair, I could cart off a only a handful of
wraith. But the priest was there, to be angered and recharmed a dozen
times. Voila, piously neutral, but still lacking two levels. Potions
of gain level belong to pet archons, but I had to sacrifice some to go
on the quest. It's curious how hard it was to gain alignment and
levels - normally a non-issue - and what a joke instead the actual
quest was. I quickly found Vlad's, was happy about one last foocubus,
and turned those wands of create monster into a huge pile of corpses
and two pet archons. But how would I make them attack Rodney? Looting
Vlad's throne was the only source of potions of gain level I could
think of. Then I carried the Amulet to the right High Altar. During
the entire game, I never saw a magic marker, a ring of conflict, or a
spellbook of create monster. The magic whistle showed up only right
before the ascension run, and the only reusable method of levitation
came too late to matter, from the High Priest of Moloch.

Congrats.

Is that some client system issue? (I've never observed such an effect
with telnet/Unix or putty/Windows.)

You mean, you've inspected the dumplogs, i.e. out-of-game information,
for identification purposes? Hmm.. - this tastes foul.

I think you'd need a blessed scroll (and read it while confused), not
just an uncursed one, to get a chance of blessing your water?

I wonder why you tried to charm wraiths...

That's where purple worms rule; with each swallowed wraith they gain a
level and subsequently, with high enough level, even attack The Wizard
and kill him in one turn. Different from the usual restriction with
wraith corpses generally, and wraith corpses in morgues specifically,
every swallowed wraith will always increase the level of purple worms.

Thank you. (Beams proudly.)

It's an issue with battle spam. I am using telnet/Unix.

To be fair, I re-identified everything properly before actually using
the stuff. At least I didn't claim to ascend something more "pure"
than I did.

An uncursed scroll affects only worn and wielded items, i. e. one
single stack of water. I had no way to bless the scrolls without
breaking conduct, and no magic marker to write ones on blessed paper.

They do follow, but they're dead by the time I reach the stairs. I was
stuck between ghosts and only had leashes, so my two vampire lords
killed what they deemed fit.

I needed those wraith corpses for myself. There were not enough sinks
and foocubi in the game. XP14 is required for the quest, and in this
game XP17 for archons to become eligible for generation in Vlad's.
In the past, all my purple worms died to fast and acted too slow.
Perhaps I can try this again with the cursed book of the dead and a
level 49 worm.

In the YAPAP, I forgot to mention there were no speed boots or books
of haste self in the game.

Do I understand correct, that you've installed something to prevent
spam and this conflicts with telnet I/O? - that sounds really awful,
to play even a single level.

Your achievement is very good, anyway. It's just a pitty that you
haven't refrained from using that side-channel source of information;
especially since you don't seem to have had any necessity to do so.

Have you thought about alchemy; did you have any potions of levitation
and enlightenment? (But I seem to recall you were generally lacking any
means of levitation, so probably that wouldn't have been an option.)

Purple worms are a bit tricky to handle, and especially without a magic
whistle as in your case; there are too many shape changers wround, and
green slimes aren't healthy as well. I lose my purple worms quite often
due to their contact with those creatures. ("It turns into it." - gaah!)

Just consider a sample of what the game prints in about four moves
(below). Now imagine going through that for 60000 turns. You quickly
get into a habit of pressing escape after each action. The Endgame is
particularily bad, but this is already a problem after Sokoban. All I
can do is: I set the options "noverbose, nosparcle", pull the xterm as
wide as possible, and occasionally wear a blindfold if there is much
fighting, junk, or eroded engraving. I wish all this spam would run up
in a separate window, like in the tiles port.

Boing! The priest of Moloch wields a mace! The mace welds itself to
the priest of Moloch's hand! The flagon crashes on your head and
breaks into shards. You yawn. The priest of Moloch zaps a wand of
striking! The wand hits it. The magic missile hits it. The priest of
Moloch hurls a potion of sleeping! The Angel of Moloch zaps you with a
magic missile! The magic missile hits you! But it reflects from your
armor! The orange dragon bites! The orange dragon hits! The orange
dragon hits! "Eat slime and die!" The mace welds itself to the priest
of Moloch's hand! The priest of Moloch wields a mace! The magic
missile hits it. The magic missile hits it. The magic missile whizzes
by you! The priest of Moloch wields a mace! The orange dragon breathes
sleep gas! The blast of sleep gas whizzes by you! The blast of sleep
gas bounces! The priest of Moloch zaps a wand of striking! Boing! The
wand misses it. You hear a chugging sound. You displaced invisible
Wunschkind. The magic missile whizzes by you! The magic missile misses
it. "Come here often?" The door is razed! In what direction? What do
you want to zap? [aejknp-tvyCDF-KMNQ or ?*] The invisible Garde du
Corps hits the master lich. The master lich is destroyed! The master
lich's body crumbles into dust. The master lich misses the invisible
Garde du Corps. The invisible Garde du Corps hits the master lich. The
invisible Garde du Corps gazes at the master lich... but nothing
happens. The invisible Garde du Corps hits the master lich. The
invisible Garde du Corps hits the master lich. The invisible Garde du
Corps hits the master lich. The invisible Garde du Corps gazes at the
master lich... but nothing happens. The invisible Garde du Corps hits
the master lich. The invisible Garde du Corps hits the master lich.

lich... but nothing happens. The invisible Wunschkind hits the master
lich. The invisible Wunschkind hits the master lich. The invisible
Wunschkind hits the master lich. You displaced invisible Wunschkind.
Something is engraved here on the floor. You read: "Elbereth". You
stop. Invisible Wunschkind is in the way! You float gently to the
floor. The master lich misses. The air crackles around the master
lich. In what direction? What do you want to zap? [aejknp-tvyCDF-KMNQ

you! The master lich points at you, then curses. --More--

I had one potion of enlightenment and two potions of levitation, one
of which I needed for the Endgame. Sure, there is a multi-step alchemy
recipe to make lots of gain level. But you need enough enlightenment
to get it started.

It's good to have the option. A tame purple worm and the cursed Book
of the Dead were my fallback plan in case the Wizard shows up more
than six times or my better archon steps on a polytrap.

Ah, okay. You meant *that* sort of spam; Nethack's verbosity.

(Though I don't see what's different in case you're playing on NAO. Last
time I played on a local box I hit the Esc key as often as I do on NAO;
no difference for me.)

I am guessing that he uses something other than the TTY interface when
playing locally where the message window can be bigger than one line.

Congrats, TJR! I've barely ever tried the pacifist route... you're
nuts, and yet, you're a demi-god. Sounds rather dangerous, actually...

I never even thought of that! Brilliant. I just had a pet purple worm
in my current game, but lost it to a polytrap (hey, my own personal
violet fungus!).

Yet a third definition to overload an already overloaded noun. Lovely. I
can do without the second "meaning" myself. If it ain't email, it ain't
spam <g>. I was wondering about possible malware myself.
