Don't you hate it when that happens?

I also see my pony included among my creatures vanquished.
What's up with that?

This event will certainly advance your experience level to 2. :-p

All creatures killed appear on that list, no matter who was responsible
for the deaths.

But my situation is not entirely desperate. The Flatlanders are, I
have learned, edible, with a taste something like very moist smoked
salmon. It takes quite a few of them to make a meal, but they are
plentiful, and they are easy to catch. - Rudy Rucker

Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong. Gosh, APLer being wrong in every
detail... how surprising.

How he died is unknown; all we know is that he died. Whether you feed
him or he feeds himself makes not the slightest difference in this
regard. The RNG pays not the least attention whatsoever at all, at all,
begorrah, to what you feed your pets (only the taming and apporting code
does). And the only way you can feel guilty about how you treat your pet
is if you displace it into a trap or water and kill it like that.

You absolutely do not know that. It happens all the time with ponys. 900
turns would be just about right, perhaps a bit soon.

I never *said* I knew how it died. You however for some inexplicable
reason seem to think you know one way - the most likely - it didn't
happen. Provide proof of it.

The pony died by being hit with the death ray. I'd fed Old Paint by
throwing five apples and had just mounted him.

It was way too early in the game for the pony to starve.

Using him as a blocker for the kobold is why "you feel guilty"

The horse was killed by the same action and in the same move you were,
but first, hence you appearing guilty of not looking out for your pet,
which most folks think more of as an assistant.

Ok, another way that makes no difference to the RNG. Not fatal (ignoring
*you* being hit for the moment) in any way, but still peeves your god
off a touch.

Again: no, it most certainly is not.

First, I don't see any messages about feeling guilty in the screenshot
provided. APLer made that up, just as he made up the starvation when the
real reason for the pony's death (a death ray) is plainly visible in the
shot.

Second, the only contexts in which the word "guilty" appear in the
NetHack code are:
- breaking vegetarianism, as a Monk;
- killing a co-aligned unicorn;
- reading a scroll of punishment when you are confused or it is blessed;
- destroying a historic statue, as an Archeologist;
- when your Tourist quest nemesis talks to you;
- and finally, yes, when _you_ kill your pet, and even then _only_ if
you do so by displacing it into a trap or a liquid.

Note that the only one of these contexts where it matters at all, for
getting a "guilty" message at least, whether any involved creature is
your pet, is the last one; and that this one has two very specific
requirements surrounding it. Note also that the message you get, in that
case, is not merely "You feel guilty", but explicitly "You feel guilty
about losing your pet like this". (Note finally that there's also a
random roll that may decide that you don't get this message, and the
penalty that comes with it, at all - but that this random roll _never_
makes you feel guilty without the other prerequisites.)

Since the game has no way to distinguish you
cleverly putting one monster in the way of another
monster's wand or missile weapon (or other attack),
from you stupidly putting one monster in the way of
another monster's wand or missile weapon (or other
attack), you get credit for whatever dies,
will-thee-nil-thee.

Well, everyone who bothered to look knows that you
are wrong in every detail, Richard, on the other
hand, is just making a lucky guess based on your
100% predictable behavior in rgrn by now.

What part of "He starved" are you now pretending you
did not write?

> You however for some inexplicable reason seem to

Taking the trouble to look at the information
furnished by the OP, you might be surprised to
notice, if you can unwedge your head long enough to
look, the "Old Paint is killed by the death ray."

Now while "Old Paint" _might_ be a pet balrog, the
name is more traditionally applied to pets of the
equine persuasion, such, say, as a pet pony,
considering how early in the game its ending
occured.

As so often, you are dead sure, and dead wrong.

What is broken in your personality that makes this
your constant behavior?

You are a laughingstock here, best candidate visible
for Village Idiot, and the constant butt of jokes,
because you have earned all that by your invariant
imbecilic behavior.

Oh, well, count your blessings, Richard didn't
bother to look carefully at the original image
either.

Actually it cannot, balrogs are immune to death reays (but they can still
get toasted by Death's attacks).

Mea culpa. Since I haven't been anywhere that
balrogs appear since a much earlier version of
NetHack (or maybe Bard's Tale I), and have no
experience with their immunities, I picked a bad
example.

Let's just say "might have been a pet gas spore"
for the sake of completing the thought, then.
