My neutral human Archeologist after three weeks of real-time finally
reached vibrating square level fully kitted, AC -35, 219 HP, XP 21,
after many excruciating hours of mapping and digging out Gehennom.
What I did to kill myself was digging a pit on VS level crawling out
of it and falling into it again ... with wielded cockatrice corpse.
DYWYPI.
Game highlights:
- Gauntlets of Power found on dlvl 1
- amulet of reflection found on dlvl 3
- found extra wand of wishing in Gehennom
Overall, this game was extremely lucky -- the unlucky end balances it
all out, however.
Please note, that my last best game was where I reached Mine's End and
died there. So this was huge step forward.

Reminder to all players: don't move along the ground while wielding a
cockatrice corpse. Levitation's fine, as long as there are no sinks and
you aren't in (an as-yet uncleared) Sokoban.
Also, bigods, wear an AoLS (and wish for one at the Castle if you don't
have one) until you've got enough experience to not need to.

By that time I have seen at least three amulets of life saving (and
had one in my inventory). But what use it is when my reflection comes
from amulet?

Two options: go reflectionless, understanding the ramifications of that.
But if you do that, you're probably in the category of players who can
play AoLSless.
Second; get reflection from something else. It'd be well worth giving up
damage from twoweaponing to have a SoR and an AoLS. What's the lack of
damage going to do, kill you?

I find fighting arch-liches hard enough with twoweaponing. I think
the proper solution is to simply take care when wielding cockatrices.

Then I think you're going about it wrong. Get to the upstairs quickly and
efficiently - then twoweapon is the difference between three whacks and
four. I've ascended a bunch and never felt the need for twoweaponing -
beyond the fact that I think it's kind of munchkinned out, defence tends
to trump offence in the late game.
It's a serious question, though. If you die for the lack of twoweapon's
damage output, you're down the AoLS, and you can try the twoweapon/AoR
approach from there, so no loss.

Ultimately, yes, and in all the other situations where you can die in the
late game. But typically I think you can expect to get your first
ascension long before you develop that degree of discipline, and as such,
it's best to plan to use AoLS when trying for the first ascension.
SDSM and one of the many other sources of MR, then. The AoLS is an
invaluable safety net until you've got a few ascensions behind you
(and even then, it doesn't hurt.) And don't forget, the most effective
weapon against archliches is a blessed scroll of genocide.
Although dual wielding cockatrices is probably a close second.
Never heard of that before - I mean, heard of someone doing
that. Sounds interesting. But wouldn't the to-hit penalty for
two-weaponing make this inferior to just a single cockatrice?
Janis
Actually, it's not possible. You can't dual wield something that
isn't a weapon class item. (I just checked in discover mode.) But
Borek said he finds fighting archliches difficult without
twoweaponing, and that he died while wielding a cockatrice corpse,
and the thought of someone dual-wielding cockatrices was amusing
enough that I thought I'd share it.
