The firm of Pater, On, and O'Gorgon is delighted to announce
the completion of the Heck^2 project, bringing exciting
new levels to the otherwise unused labyrinthine real estate of
Gehennom. The imps have called a (foulmouthed) halt to
construction; the lemures have put down their trowels; the
mumakil have been unyoked. The ribbon cutting ceremony will
be held shortly at:

http://www.multifoliate.com/nh

but now I will take questions. You, Sir Balrog.

"What exactly is this?"

I see you've burnt your information pamphlet. I'll go over it
again. This patch replaces 42 of our maze levels with special
levels, some newly built, some discovered in the reopening of
lost and ancient chambers filled with woe and dread. I see
that appeals to you Sir. Of course it goes without saying that
any one route from, oh, say the Valley to the Sanctum will
encounter a mere 5-8 of these new levels (out of 9-13 total
pure labyrinth levels to be encountered on any such path). So
you see that they've been carefully distributed and do not
generally overwhelm the pure labyrinth areas in an unseemly
fashion.

You, the zruty in the back.

"Is this one of those 'nhdat' patches that doesn't change the
executable and all that compatibility stuff remains unbroken?"

Yes. Next question; you, with the horns.

"Grf, as you know we mighty Minotaurs have special
interest in labyrinths. We like to wander them with a
certain frequency, we like to arrange our boulders,
gold, and our random assortments of traps and other
objects... We arrange them just right. We put them where
they are for a reason. For damn good reasons."

I can see where this is going, and assure you again that
we have paid close attention to your concerns, as we
detailed in our many responses to your vigorous letter
writing. I think you will be satisfied with the results.

You, the umber hulk in the sunglasses.

"As a representative of the Unified Stone Nibblers, I am asking
you about the 'special' level content of this patch. You
know what I mean, I'm talking about the sort of levels with
walls you can't eat or walk through."

We like to believe that all of our levels are 'special'
here at Pater, On, and [ducking thrown rock mole]

"Answer the question! Is it true that a few of these levels
might even be called [click] [snort] 'lairs'?"

No comment. Now now, people, calm down. I assure you that
if any special .. consideration has been given to the senior
partners or financial backers of the project, that the vast
majority of the new levels remain firmly in public hands,
and that any 'lair' levels are far off the beaten
path, if indeed they exist at all which I still firmly deny.
We would never cross the Unified Stone Nibblers.

Yes, Mr. Orcus, your worship?

"People are saying that this project was motivated NOT by
the desire to shield the underworld from those pesky amulet
hunters, but instead by the desire to make their hunt LESS
BORING! What do you say to this, WORM!?!"

Wholly untrue. I assure you that our senior partners and
architects despise those so called "heroes" just as much
as you do, if not more. If you received the information
packet sent to you by courierbat, you must have read our
analysis--the new levels, if anything, will *increase* the
number of mortals who meet their doom in the underworld.
Surely this is a Good Thing.

Anything more? Yes, the lich standing with the mind flayers.

"ARCH lich, and MASTER mind flayers. Now, Answer Me: when
will we get protection from genocide [hiss][mumble][tentacle
flubber] that we richly deserve beyond all previous known
richly deservings?"

I'm afraid that subject is of little interest to the firm
of Pater, On, and O'Gorgon, but your complaint is noted.

Mr. Impaler, you had a question?

"Yes. I've come to ask about the benefit package that we
worked out for the previous Heck patch. I'm not asking
to be able to turn people to stone or anything, heh, but
I'd like to know what kind of benefit I might receive
from this patch. You know it would be very simple, I
keep telling you to take out those ladders; I don't
need them, and things would be so much more secure
without them, and my tower is so old, musty, and it seems
to be strangely off center, and with matching funds I
know I could really make things right, get some cheap
plastic candelabra, maybe, too. Also I've been thinking
about this 'star' vampire thing, and strictly speaking
*must* I be present to effectively guard the youknowwhat?
I think with just a little work..."

Yes, that's very nice. If that is all the questions, I
hope to see you at the ribbon cutting, where snacks
will be provided for those that eat. Also when we take
the tour please keep in mind that not all of the paint
is dry, and use the comment cards if you please. Yes,
Sir, we'll have some fireproof ones made right away.

I am both shocked and amazed. I was just sitting around, thinking about
adding new gehennom levels to make it less boring, and lo and behold, K.
Bailey has done far more than anything I would have even considered. I tip
my (conical) hat to you ::tips hat::

one stupid question though, I saw that you mentioned that it doesn't change
the binary, so it would be fully save compatible, even for someone who has
ventured about halfway through gehennom? I just want to make sure I don't
lose my (wannabe) extincionist wizard.

[a very entertaining description]

Thanks! I think I'll dust off my ranger and explore Heck at last. The
patch looks really good.

I want it!
How long do you think it will take to have the windows nhdat file?
The link http://www.multifoliate.com/nh/nhdat.zip gives a 404 error!

You will not see any of the new levels since the dungeon is created at the
beginning of the game, and that is when the new levels are picked as well.

Fortunately you also won't encounter any missing level errors, because the names
of existing levels are not changed. If the patch included an alternate sanctum
level (so that they were named "sanct-1.lev" and "sanct-2.lev") then the
game would crash looking for the old "sanctum.lev" that it had picked pre-patch,
and I would be right now hastily adding redundant levels with the old names into
the patch.

Things should be hunky dory, but I won't tell you that you shouldn't back up
your character defensively now and then, especially with the crazy time investment
involved in an exctinctionist game.

If by dust off you mean restore a saved game you started previously,
I'm afraid your ranger is in for unmitigated mazification. :( Unless
you're good at editing savefiles.

I suppose I should put a note about that up on the page.

Oh, too bad.

I guess I could poke around with the savefile, but I'll probably just
fire up a brand new character instead. The ranger can wait, he isn't
going anywhere. :-)

Looks good, I'll have to apply it to my source tree.

PS. Does anyone else here use roll-your-own DOS binaries?

Impressive, both the introduction and how you push the limits of
the level compiler.

Not yet. I'm reluctant to start fighting with compiling.

Is your binary file-compatible with 3.4.2? I need a set
of level building tools for the DOS version.

'Fighting'? Compiling NetHack is ridiculously easy.

hahah

gonna have to check this out on the merit of your witty post alone, reminds
me of that README file i read when first getting into nethack. very funny.

thanks!

Afraid I'm still on 3.4.0 with Allegro and numerous patches. (I don't want to
fight with updating AllegroHack to 3.4.2 given how little feedback I recieved on
the 3.4.0 version.) Unfortunately, I'm using a couple patches which break
compatibility with Vanilla 3.4.x binaries.

I would encourage you to build your own binaries. Here's a short walkthrough:

1. Download and install the DJGPP compiler from http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/ It
works best with Nethack and is what I use. Get the Nethack source from
www.nethack.org if you don't have it already. (Use Winzip to extract it from the
.tgz)

2. Open a command prompt, cd to the nethack sys\msdos\ directory. Run "edit
setup.bat", then immediately save the file and exit. Now run "setup gcc"

2. cd to the nethack src\ directory and run "edit makefile". The only line in
the makefile that you'll likely need to change is the one that specifies
"GAMEDIR". Set GAMEDIR to your liking. If you don't want make to overwrite your
defaults.nh everytime you recompile, comment out the line
"copy $(SSHR)\NetHack.cnf $(GAMEDIR)\defaults.nh" by putting a # in front of
it. Save your changes to "makefile", and exit.

3. Still in the src\ directory, run "make install". This should give you a
working nethack binary and full datafiles.

4. For future changes to the source code (*.c), run "make" with no arguments to
get a new binary. For changes to the level definition files, you'll need to run
"make all" to force make to update the datafiles.

The first thing that I do when I hear that new version of nethack is
rolled out, is grap the sources and compile both win tty and graphics
version.

I use djgpp and Visual C++.

The reason to do that is that I want to know that I can compile the
vanilla before I start to add patches.
