--More--

The bag is full of goodies including a ton of holy water, two magic
lamps, and lots o wands of all kinds. I've cleared out the Ft. and
all the vaults, and used that to buy protection.

This is the first monk I've got close to being ready to wake the
wizard and run. So I really don't want to screw it up.

From other characters I've ascended, the goal should be to have a
complete AK with -50AC or -40AC being ok as long as hp > 500. While I
seem to have the complete AK, I'm pretty far from the AC/hp numbers,
so I thought I'd do a bunch of #offer #pray at a nearby alter. Only
problem is that I got crowned and I suspect my luck or alignment or
whatever stat determines it is too high for me to just get protection
or hp.

I'm thinking of trying for a wish from one of the magic lamps.
Wishing for a black pudding corpse. Then using my turn undead spell to
revive it and start a pudding farm. Of course having done pudding
farming before, I really really really want to avoid it.

Now since monks can't wear body armor or a shield, I figure there must
be something that makes up for that. Either some way to get the
missing AC or to easily boost hp to make up for getting hit more. I
haven't figured that out yet, so I thought I'd ask here how you make
up for this monk drawback.

Any suggestions?

a monk's only penalty for wearing a shield is the fact that you're
unable to deliver a stagging blow (4% chance with grand master skill,
but you're using a weapon anyway, so...), and the -20 to-hit penalty
for wearing body armor is balanced quite well since you're level 30
and have maxed luck (+43 to-hit)

really, you can just probably go and ascend right now, but get some
*dsm if you're truly paranoid :)

Where are those extreme numbers derived from?
Your AC:-27 and HPs:~300 is certainly enough.

If you are fast or even very fast and unburdened that shouldn't be a
problem, and if you have conflict then even less a problem. How does
it come that they are so critical in your games? I assume that you
have a couple blessed full healing in case the air elementals engulf
you? If not then I'd suggest to alchemize some potions for that case.
But generally avoid contact with monsters and run through the Planes.

Hope to see you at the demigod bar; I'm currently playing a monk, too.

Agreed.

So, save up your wands of teleportation, death, and polymorph for
them. There is also another possibility why the air elementals have
such an easy time getting you in their sights like maybe ...
must ... resist ... giving ... away the ... answer <gasp!>

I wish I knew. They just always seem to swarm me and next thing I
know I'm engulfed and down to less than 100hp.

These are all quaffed to get max hp up to the 200-300 range.

I agree running is a very good idea. Even when I wear boots of
Levitation or quaff that spare !oLev, the plane of air just really
slows me down enough for them to catch me

Actually just made it somehow. Thanks for telling me to go. I'll try
to do a ascension post shortly.

A mistake. Sure, you don't want to be carrying the lot around, but one
quaffed in advance is worth 8 MaxHP. One quaffed in a crisis is worth 8
MaxHP and all your HP back (and a cure sickness to boot).

Have you tried dropping a scroll of scare monster when you got swarmed
on the Plane of Air?
