Yaay! After 3 weeks of NH and numerous spoilers, I managed to ascend a characterSilma the Wizard, n-th of a long generation of Silma's which failed on various dungeon levels but never even got to Medusa's island... and this humble Wizard, first past the Castle, manages to ascend with little hassle! I was initially less than happy about being a gnome, because I like being chaotic, but hey, I figured an initial knowledge of "Create monster" and somewhat easier mines would help me. I was right!

...of course, this has to be traced back to an early WoW (0:3) i found on Dlvl 3 or 4. My initial wish of "2 blessed scrolls of charging" yielded only one of them, then I wished up a staple blessed greased +2 SDSM which would last me the entire game... and save me in many a circumstance. The Gods were happy and made me find speed boots and a cornuthaum not much later. Quaffing an unidentified potion had the side-effect of turning me into a silver dragon... but hey, I'm female, so presto! I had 2 cute dragonlings... one of which murdered a shopkeeper before long. Good gold for protection, and also his inventory. Ahem. Also, my cloak of MR was gone, but soon replaced with another found in bones files (just on the Oracle's door), properly uncursed and fooprofed. Incidentally, I wasted a scroll of charging on a dried-up marker. I had completely fooprofed, blessed and enchanted all of my armor (no gloves though, which made me uneasy due to previous cockatrice-related deaths)

Sokoban yelded the BoH, good! The Quest and subsequent descent down were fairly easy, by that point I was wielding a +3 Magicbane and had AC of -19 and on-off pets.. no magic whistle, so keeping them was a pain, but I had fun with polytraps (at some point a pet green slime slimed half a dungeon). After the quest, with unlimited mana at my fingers, I sacrificed like crazy and obtained Ogresmasher, Vorpal Blade, Fire Brand and Frost Brand, the latter of which (blessed greased +7) would follow me to Hell and further.

In Ludios I learned the true power of the ring of conflict... and gained +3 leather gauntlets, very good. Also nice gold for protection, again. Not long after, accidental poly'ing of a live monster turned him into an Arch-lich which went on to curse my items, summoning mind flayers and the like. Panicking, I burned a wish on a trice corpse and disposed of him. Then I accidentally threw a force bolt on my WoW, which happened to be glass!

Medusa was backstabbed by the finger of death and the Castle was similarly conflict'd. I then proceeded to wish for a couple things I sorely lacked: a blessed figurine of an Archon and a magic whistle! Needless to say, this made the first half of Hell really easy. Asmodeus was bribed just for the heck of it, Juiblex engulfed me the 2nd step I took in his lair, but I digged out and my Archon finished him off in his free turn... never got a look on him. Vlad was unicorn horn'd (after I lost my archon to a lurker above!). The Wizard died to the finger of death... 8 times. The mysterious force was a complete pain in Nom, very mild above that and I also took with me a large cat I found in hell, poor thing! (...he then went on to be a jabberwock at the first polytrap I found above). The elemental planes were fairly easy with a good bout of luck: found the portal on the plane of fire without confused gold detection after I managed to waste a scroll while stunned. On the astral plane, I locked Death behind me (and an army of ants and beetles) and go to the leftmost altar first... which was the right one. Done!

It was great fun!

Congratulations! I remember my first ascension like it was yesterday!

Now you think you're done with the game, but soon you'll get this urge to try Valkyrie. Once you ascend that, you'll really be done. Until you decide to try Tourist. Once you ascend tourist, you're really really done, since that's the hardest role... but soon you'll be itching to try Rogues. And Monks. And Knights, Samurai, and Barbarians. And Archaeologists. And Priests, Cavemen, and Healers.

At some point, you'll probably also want to try SLASH'EM... good luck!

And rangers. And hmm, what were wizards like again...? And what about
different conducts, and all those fun strategies like polyself...

Or UnNetHack :)
GruntHack might be worth a look too; it's similar to SLASH'EM regarding
its flaws, but it does have some nice ideas, IMHO.

SporkHack seems to be nice too, though I never really tried it.

UnNetHack has the advantage of still being developed, of course, and is
really nice without the balance issues of SLASH'EM/GruntHack.
(Of course, it's still a NetHack variant, so it's not completely
without balance issues; think of Elbereth.)

Congratulations! Ascending after playing the game for only three weeks
is no small achievement, IMHO. It took me decades to get that far…
(Admittedly, there were quite a few breaks in those years, and I was
always playing more for the fun of it than desperately trying to win.)

Thanks! It's not that I "play to win", but the game got me so hooked up that I used up some hours of my spare time, on Pc and on phone.. so eventually it worked :D

Now I'm well on the way again with a Samurai... and yes, can't wait to try some conducts and whatnot, but first I think I'll try ascending some more characters, just to get more comfortable!

Good choice. After three weeks, you have seen far from everything the
game can throw at you. Even if you'd play another Wiz gnome, the next
game would be very different.

Indeed! Right now on the plane of fire with my samurai (on a smartphone), 300+hp due to alchemy, -30 AC because i ripped out of my +5 hawaiaan t-shirt accidentally and never found a /oPoly... the plane of air was an orgy as always, used conflict but dropped to 60hp due to super-air elementals... but I loved the feeling of absolute chaos among the storm ("Kaboom! Boom! Boom! The air elemental engulfs the white dragon! The djinni is jolted with electricity! Boing!")

By the way, I never saw an Archon this game or the last, save one I wished for and came out unfortunately only peaceful... is this usual? True that with the gnomish wizard I wandered on Astral for less than 100 turns... also I encountered a disenchanter which didn't passively disenchant (and never got a hold of a /oCancellation).. wierd.

I'd say it's unusual (unless you deliberately level-drain yourself
post-Quest to keep the odds of an Archon down during the run), but not
impossible: there are no guaranteed Archons in the game. There are some
guaranteed A's, if I remember the wiki correctly, but none of them are
preset Archons.

I'd say mildly unusual, based on my rather few ascension runs.
And I don't hurry, so they /do/ have some time to spawn ...

Be happy that you haven't seen any/many yet. ;-)

As high level monsters I think they will appear more often if you're playing
with high XL. So, yes, it's usual that you don't meet them regularly. If you
were asking whether it's usual that an Archon from a wished blessed figurine
will be peaceful; the standard probabilities are 80% tame, 10% peaceful, and
10% hostile.

I usually do not go for a high XL, and (as far as memory serves) in a hundred
ascensions I have not seen more than two (or so) Archons.

Yes I'm happy about that as I did witness the combat capabilities of a pet Archon... also got a few hits myself when I put a ring of conflict right next to him (-30 AC, 150->70hp in 2 turns).

I hit a max lvl of 21 so that's pretty "low" I think... also, still, I don't like to linger around on the Planes ;)
