I've posted this before, but that was in summer 98, and I'd like
to know what people think now.

---
Lets imagine that you are outside and find a smooth stick. You,
just playing around, pick it up and say "Zap!" Next thing you
know, you have a handful of dust and there is a booming voice
from the sky saying "You wrest one last charge from the worn out
wand! The wand of wishing crumbles to dust! For what do you
wish?"

Other than wishing you'd waited for a blessed scroll of charging
to show up, for what DO you wish?
---

These days, I'd probably go for 2 blessed potions of gain
ability, blessed fixed +2 boots of speed, or a blessed bag of
holding.

ESP, no... I don't want to sense everywhere any sort of life form
is around me. And the problem with lifesaving is that I know
myself. I know the one time i didn't wear the amulet, I'd get hit
by a car.

I didn't think of, and will add to my list, "blessed +2 unicorn
horn".

Now that I think about it, there's a certain appeal to ODSM.  Not having to
sleep would be pretty nice, pity about the weight.

A cloak of invisibility has countless RL uses, anything of levitation sounds
good to me, teleportation would be good if only you could have TC as well, a
nethack-style skeleton key would be incredible, as would a magic marker, but
what many of us would probably benefit most from is an old-fashioned ring of
adornment. ;)

Anyway, as you said, it's a silly question.

unicorn horn?

An amulet of life saving will save your live *once*.
A pair of speed boots (even if cursed) will save your life *many
times*.

If I haven't got speed boots yet, my first wish ALWAYS goes on
them. Even above items that grant magic resistance... and the next thing
to wish for is a magic-resistance-granting item if I haven't got one.

If i wished for a unicorn horn, i'd likely get the thing that
was sold as the "genuine" horn for centuries - a narwal tooth.
Lifesaving, well, if you're 85 years old and very weak and ill,
having your life saved from a heart attack _once_ won't be such
a great bonus, eh? And that's a rather likely sort of death.

I'd be tempted to try for a black dragon scale mail, but i don't
think we've got the proper sort of sink around here. Wishing for
three cockatrice eggs and smuggling them into packages of eggs
in the local supermarket could be interesting, if rather mean.
If i could get two items, i'd go for a ring of polymorph and one
of polymorph control[1], but with only one wish?

Jumping boots and an amulet of magical breathing are strong
contenders. Other options would be: ring of regeneration, ring
of teleportation, ring of invisibility. And of course skeleton
keys - unlock every door or compartment. Finally, the easy way
out: maximum number of zorkmids allowed, or three diamonds.

But what i would really wish for would be a blessed ring of
levitation.

[1] And with three wishes, i'd take a blessed figurine of a
*cubus[1a], a leash and a bullwhip ;)
[1a] but whether i'd take a succubus or an incubus i'd have to
decide on a whim.

Those are pretty good choices.

Someone suggested wishing for the Amulet of Yendor, but of course if you
tried that you'd only get a cheap plastic imitation.

Someone else suggested wishing for money or gems, but I think a good
magical item would be worth a lot more than you could wish for straight-up.

ODSM would be a solid choice - having DSM would just be _cool_, and (in
theory) never having to sleep would be extemely convenient.  OTOH, a
ring of free action is a bit easier to carry around.

As far as all the other suggestions go, I think there are quest
artifacts that could do better.  Why wish for a ring of regeneration
when you could have the Staff of Aesculapious?

But, I have to agree with the person who suggested holy water.  Why?
Because unlike every other wish I can think of, it can propogate itself.
You could make a quick killing selling holy water to anyone and
everyone, and after a short time everyone would have all they need.
Perhaps some communities would even have holy water on tap.

Polymorphing into a black dragon is your goal? Who would you
disintegrate?

Certainly, and not even a specific target. If anything, throwing
them at certain people might be more useful.

Impractical, with the higher hunger, IMO.

Better with the =oI, as otherwise one would likely get into
trouble... ;)

Depends on how that would work in RL. How do you get about with
levitation? It doesn't lessen your hunger so I'd guess you'd have
to do some weird swimming motions that are just as strenuous as
walking, no gain...

<g>

An amulet of unchanging would be cool, but I don't really need
that and would rather go for the Eye of the Aethiopica (bugger if
I haven't got any spoilers with me to check whether that's
actually spelled right), that, or the Orb of Fate (whichever
would let me teleport around into places I've been in that don't
have to be on another planet, as I'm lacking the latter... ;) ).
An [S] "oFly would be nice too, if I can't get a tame saddled
silver dragon.

Myeah, but what's the use of being saved from a coronary if your lungs
only have a couple more years to go? I'd rather have something that
makes me enjoy my life more before that age.
Buggered if I can think of what, though. Everything mentioned so far

I'd never waste a wish on a unicorn horn; you *always* run into a
unicorn!

As for wishes IRL... I'd wish for a blessed ring of invisibility, but
then I'd get a golden ring and big, big trouble... :)

<g> Possibly. Though in real RL I probably wouldn't use a name of
often-killed game pets (and the other way round). Bad omen and
superstition... :)

Or visiting friends that have moved from a 20 (slow) walk away to
somewhere at the end of the world that takes an hour with the
tram to get there. And of course save any other time-wasting trip
anywhere.
