Why this is the coolest YAAP I've ever had (maybe even as cool as my
YAFAP)? Well:
You (that's me :) and
the guardian Angel of Hermes (first time I had an Angel survive) and
***** _the invisible Pestilence_ ***** and
***** _Famine_ *****
went to your reward with 3543290 points.
Yes! _This_ is how a Healer should ascend! If the tame Archon named
Pistis Sophia hadn't been eaten by a stinking trapper right next to the
altar of Hermes on Astral, this would've been the perfect ascension.
As it is, the RNG can go and cry in a corner, 'cause I beat him to a
pulp. And for the Archon I lost I _am_ going to start a lot of games
with a pet named RNG and let it die in most horrible ways.
Ok, here's the story. It's _very_ long and probably very spoilish and I
couldn't care less right now. ;)
First the game up till the Quest. This is copied from my earlier post
titeled "Yay! Rejoice! The Staff is mine!". If you already read that,
than a) you must've been really bored and b) skip down to where it says
-----> HERE <-----
Incredible luck paired with good, nay, _really_ _great_ pets did it. I
got a Healer past the Quest. Which is no easy thing to do, even if I say
so myself... This is going to be rather long and contain some spoilage.
And serves no other purpose than to brag, I guess...
This gnomish Healer was actually very lucky early on, a bones level
from a previous failed attempt provided me with so much gold that I got
my AC down to 1 naked in an Elbereth-less protection racket. Which I
think is only fair, considering the three times some arch-lich got me in
the mines (one another bones level). Still haven't down the Mines lower
than Mine Town actually...
The early game sure lasts along time for gnomish Healers... But with 3
dogs and 3 cats (most large) he only thing I had to watch out for was
starvation on my part... No magic whistle made that problem even worse,
but I managed. Sokoban went well, got a BoH, which was much needed to
keep me unburdened but still with enough equipment to defend myself. The
combat tank classes sure have an advantage here. A good weapon like
Excalibur, Mjollnir or Snickersnee sure makes up for a lot of wands and
scrolls and such...
Well, I actually found the Quest portal on Dlvl 13. I went in, saw
dragons, went out, went in again, tamed them all with a magic harp, went
out again with a Gray Dragon and set the dogs and cats free. Two or
three of those got eaten later on by the Gray Dragon... Well, such is
life...
Still further down I noticed two jackals moving about (by telepathy) on
what seemed to be a sealed of 2x2 room. Well, it was and it contained
the portal to Ludios...
I had an AC of -10, no reflection nor MR, but at least one zap of
polymorph, before doing Ludios, provided me with a long sought for magic
whistle and a cloak of protection.
The Gray Dragon I had tamed along with all the others on the first level
of the Quest ate a chameleon corpse while I was holding the door to
Ludios, turned into a Water Nymph and was killed by a magic missile.
Which made me rather sad. So it was quite good there were so many
soldiers to take my anger out on. I was holding the door and killing
them one by one, often zapping sleep (which I had learned from a
spellbook I had found) into the horde on the other side, to minimize the
chance of them zapping evil death rays or such into me...
After the soldiers where mostly dead, I took out the magic harp I had
used to tame the first Quest Dragons and used it's last charge to tame a
Silver Dragon outside Ludios. Then I killed the rest of the outer
dragons, got yellow dragon scales and went out again, back to my stash
on Dlvl 13 (where an altar to Hermes and the Quest portal are). There I
enchanted the scales into a yellow DSM and got an AC of -16, which was
enough to clean out Ludios. Croesus was sleep zapped and poked to death
with my blessed +2 unicorn horn (at expert skill). Also a wraith on one
of the treks got me to XL 15. Warning is cool :)
A Gray Dragon from inside of Ludios was kind enough to leave its scales
together with a ?oEA. There were still some monsters inside Ludios, so I
blocked the door with a boulder from a stone giant and again went back
to the stash.
Exchanged the yellow DSM with a gray DSM and went back to Ludios.
"Silberner Wächter" (SW) (silver guardian) the Silver Dragon was growing
up nicely along the way. Back on the way to Ludios I got fire resistance
from a red naga, completing the "usual" resistances. Then cleaned out
the rest of Ludios. The throne vanished after two tries and got me
nothing (good or bad). I did find an uncursed polished silver shield,
which I couldn't use, on account of both the unicorn horn and
quaterstaffs being two handed weapons...
I was just glad that none of the Ludios soldiers had had a WoDeath. Me,
I had one. I don't quite remember where I had it from, but I figured if
I had one, chances were somebody else might as well...
So, I decided to do the Quest without reflection. I figured I might be
able to hide behind SW should a black dragon come along. I was magic
protected, but not disintegration resistant yet, so that was my #1 worry.
Stepping through the portal, I got a message that I had better succeed
this time. I recall somebody saying you can only try the Quest for a
certain number of times, so I knew it was now or never. Stupidly I had
forgotten to take the polished silver shield along, which I remembered
when I realized that dragons might also be black. I had Sting and SW
with me, so I wouldn't have been completely defensless while wearing the
shield and advancing to melee range of a black dragon.
Well, through out all the quest levels I actually managed not to fall
into the water, nor to get drowned by the eels. The first black dragon
appeared in the temple. He got one disintegration blast at me (which
whizzed by...) before I got into melee range. Thankfully I wasn't
satiated at the moment, so I felt very firm soon afterwards. I whistled
in SW (should have done that before getting into the fight with the
black dragon, maybe) and we went down.
Two levels below, still no Cyclops (I knew it would be the Cyclops,
since one of the Healers on the tournament had the Cyclops as a killer
on the high score list). Well, I had a WoDeath especially reserved for
him. On that level, another black dragon shot one disintegration blast
past me, then I meleed him. I had to quaff a !oFH until me and SW killed
all the dragons.
The next level down was the Cyclops' Lair. I was standing on a little
island, with a level teleporter to one side and found I didn't bring a
WoCold along. Fortunatly I still had the two ?oEarth from Sokoban with
me and fortunatly neither me nor SW got level teleported anywhere. I had
planned to use those as protection in an emergency. They came in handy
here and one was sufficient, so I got to keep the other one. I made a
path to the land around Cyclops' island. Then I went around killing
snakes and rats until SW had taken care of most of the eels in the moat
around the island.
Finally I pushed a last boulder into that moat and went across. I got
out my WoDeath (I had it in my BoH, since I didn't want it to get
disintegrated by a lightning bolt or something) and manouvered the
dragons surrounding Cyclops in a position that I could get a shot at
him. Well, one zap and he was down. I whistled for SW and we killed the
last four dragons there.
So, I finally have it in my hands. The Staff of Aesculapius. I collected
all the goodies on the levels, went back to Hippocrates and had the
Quest completed. And they were glad! And there was much rejoicing!
Went back to my stash, b/u/c id'd the loot, put the ~45.000 gold pieces
I was still carrying from Ludios (for no apparent reason other than
maybe lack of sleep and lots of other stuff on my mind) and most of the
loot into my stash box at the altar (which already contained roughly
that sum), saved and went to brag about it here :)
-----> HERE <-----
Ok, so that was that. Never actually went below Mine Town. When I felt
ready to face lots of Liches and such, I felt I should do the Ascension
Run and finish this game, not go and see the Mines again...
Here's what I remember about the rest of the game:
Medusa's Level was the Titan version. This was actually the first time
I've ever seen that level. Well, I had none of the means of crossing the
level available that I know of, so I dug down. The castle I opened with
my magic harp and the fight lasted quite some time until all the
monsters swarming out were killed.
My pet silver dragon had been turned into an Ettin by a poly trap in the
maze level between Medusa and the castle. Which I didn't much like, but
it couldn't be helped.
The castle wand got me a blessed figurine of an Archon, wielding
Sunsword, so I had something like a lightsource. I also got water
walking boots (blessed fireproof +2), a scroll of charging, a magic
marker and an amulet of reflection.
Went to empty the two barracks, where a soldier death rayed the Ettin,
but the rest where no problem, and left me with two WoDeath in my Inventory.
I dragged the 100.000 zorkmids into my BoH, went to the VotD and donated
all of it. Got one more point of protection, whistled in the Archon and
got my money back. Leaving no more priests in the Dungeons, so I left
the pile of gold there. I decided to name my Archon Pistis Sophia, cause
she was supposed to be an Archon and the name means something like Faith
Wisdom, which I could very much do with.
While there a wolf left a figurine of a leocrotta, which I applied and
got a tame Leocrotta, whom I named Geburah, which afaik, means Strength.
Well, some more alchemy, stack sorting, magic marker usage and such
provided me with more hit points, better AC (-38) and some scrolls of
magic mapping. A last charge
I also recharged my magic Harp and used it to tame one of the castle
dragons (a silver one, guarding the weapon and armor storage to the
north). I named him Hod, which I think means splendor, which seemed
fitting. (Yes, I was going for wierd names in this game). The armory
actually had a T-shirt and a Hawaiian shirt. I decided to thake the
T-shirt. I was the one about Fort Ludios Intra-Mural Lafoobar Team.
Considering the money from Fort Ludios was quite useful, I chose it over
the Hawaiian shirt. Also it fit the color of the rest of my armor better
(in the tiles version, you see). The castle throne got me nothing
actually...
Found out that it's a bad idea to let Archons go fight Umber Hulks. Was
I glad she didn't turn hostile on me, the occasional confused bump hurt
enough.
Well, went mapping Gehennom. During this time Hod got turned into a long
worm, because he had just killed a Knight and I thought it would be
funny if a dragon would actually eat a knight. That knights in Gehennom
are mostly doppelganger I didn't realize until after he had
polymorphed... This pissed me off (mostly because I felt stupid about
it), but couldn't be helped.
Geburah the Leocrotta actually made it with me to Vlad's Tower. While
standing on the stairs I considered patching in the Tough Vlad patch,
but decided that this was not the right time for it. Healers have a hard
enough time without putting Vlad on steroids and evil magick. So I went
into Vlad's tower, killed the monsters and Vlad. A hostile Leocrotta
killed Geburah and so it was me and Pistis Sophia from then on.
Well, no complaints about Vald being weak this time, since I purposly
didn't change it... His throne was quite nice to me. I got one genocide
(deicided on green slime, still mad about the silver dragon I once lost
to one). Then one wish. Considered speed boots, but I had already found
a spellbook of Haste Self, so I went for a magic marker instead. Gave
the AoLS to Pistis Sophia. Dragged all the loot back up to the VotD.
Enchanted Vorpal Blade to rustproof +7, and my armor as high as it would
go. Made some more holy water. Blessed more stuff, enchanted the 12
elven daggers to +1 with an uncursed ?oEW I had found and for some
reason didn't bless... Decided that an AC of -43, with over 300 HP was
enough.
One last polymorph charge got me a =oSlowDigestion and later on I found
one of Free Action and an "oMagical Breathing lying about in Gehennom.
Well, I used the rest of the magic marker charges to write magic mapping
scrolls, which ran out at about Dlvl 47. The VS I found on Dlvl 50. I
dug four pits around it to mark it, cleared the area around it from
walls (for no particular reason actually) and went back up, carving
straight line paths between the stairs. And clearing the Wizards tower
up to Rodney's abode.
Back in the VotD, again sorted my stuff for the run. I decided that
although it was 4 o'clock in the morning, I couldn't just save now and
do the rest tomorrow, so I made double sure I had everything I needed.
Including one cockatrice egg I had found and id'd. By this time I knew
lots of useful spells, including remove curse, charm monster <grin>,
identify, foo healing, cure sickness, stone to flesh and some others I
didn't need so much. I knew magic mapping, but at 86% fail, that wasn't
doing any good. I reread all the spellbooks, though I noticed on Air
(when I wanted to heal the Archon) that it doesn't actually help to read
spellbooks of spells you haven't forgotten yet. Which was annoying since
amongst those were the healing spells.
Well, I felt prepared. I went down, into the portal and up to Rodney's
resting place. Two zaps (one WoDigging one WoDeath) and I had the Book.
Went down to the VS. Rodney re-appeared pretty soon and bothered me, but
the WoDeath still worked. And yes, I _did_ think I could kill him, so
there.
The Sanctum wasn't too much of a problem. Especially with an Archon for
company. The combined power of an Archon, the Staff of Aesculapius and
Vorpal Blade made it to the High Priest of Moloch pretty soon. Tried to
pick up the AoY, but I had actually filled out my whole inventory with
gems as curse buffering, so I couldn't pick it up at first... Well, put
some gems into my BoH, got the AoY, named it "The One" and made my way
back out.
I did have a c !oGL, but I wanted to get out quick and not wait until
Pistis Sophia was next to me. I especially didn't want to find out that
she would've stayed in the Sanctum, which I wasn't sure she wouldn't do...
So, out I went and up up and away! Well, actually that would've been
very nice. I don't know, I always thought the mysterious force is bad
only for lawfuls... Well, this neutral gnomish Healer found out just how
bad it can get.
Here's a list of what happened to me on my way back up:
Dlvl 47 -> 47, 43 -> 43
That's not all. On Dlvl 40, some bastard lich decided to see if I had
what it takes to ascend. Was I glad my unicorn horn was blessed, for
Demogorgon stood next to me. My heart missed a beat and I was actually
shaking.
I whacked Demogorgon a few times, between frantic applications of my
unicorn horn. I didn't want to drop the AoY and it was draining my Pow
too fast to cast cure sickness very often. During one of the turns I
wasn't being sick, I decided to get out my !oFH from my BoH. And was
reminded of the cockatrice egg I had been carrying around with me. Well,
Demogorgon appeared next to me again, I threw the egg and Splat! A wave
of relief eminates from GP_Spukgestalt. Demogorgon as a statue is quite
ok. But alive... He actually managed to get me down to 150 HP from my
340 or so that I had. I guess without the Staff regenerating me, that
alone would've been the end. Well, Pistis Sophia and I took out the rest
of the summoned nasties and went on our merry way:
40->42,40->40,37->39.36->37,35->36 (by this time I thought I'd never get
out of Gehennom without having to go back to the VS again), 36->37,
35->36 and that was that. Rodney did appear some more there, but wasn't
much of a problem for me and the Archon.
At the stash I left the invocation utensils behind, on account of weight
issues. Took some of the stuff I had left there which I didn't need for
Rodney but wanted for the Planes (like ?oGD and a crystal ball and
WoDiggings and Teleportation and so on).
Well, went up to the castle, around it, because I didn't want to change
boots right there and into the maze above the castle. Rodney appeared
again and double troubled (not for the first time) after I beat him up
good with the Staff. So good in fact that I only got a small Rodney
tile. No idea what that was supposed to be, but I just kept whacking
him. Once he reached an XL so that Pistis Sophia (XL 28) started
whacking him too, there were no more problems. he actually got scared
and ran of, upstairs. We went after him, beat the last 19 HP from him
and went on. I decided that I'd again go to the Quest and show the Quest
Leader the AoY. It's something I try to do in most of my ascensions.
Well, this time it was nearly the end of me, but I lucked out. Right
after stepping through the portal, Rodney appeared. 3 death rays later
he was dead and his corpse fell into the water. I thought nothing of it
and went to see Hippocrates, who asked me how my quest for the AoY was
doing. Well, I thought, can't you see I have it right here?
You can maybe imagine what a terrible surprise it was to see I didn't
have the AoY on me anymore. Scrolling back the messages, I saw that
Rodney had stolen it before falling into the water. I sure was glad I
had that AoMagicalBreathing with me!!!
I went to the place I had killed him, put down my BoH, made sure all the
stuff not ment to get wet was in the BoH, switched Amulets, dived down,
recovered the AoY, went out of the water, switched my AoReflection back
on and picked up the BoH again. Then showed Hippocrates the AoY.
This is what he said this time:
"Ah, you recovered the Amulet, GP_Spukgestalt. Well done!
"Now, you should know that you must travel through the elemental planes
to the astral, and there return the Amulet to Hermes. Go forth and
may our prayers be as a wind upon your back."
Well, thank you I thought and went on to Dlvl 1. On the upstairs, with
Pistis Sophia by my side, I again checked I did in fact have the AoY
with me and went to the Plane of Earth. Rodney was there with an Elf
King and a Minotaur. I killed him while the Archon took care of the
other monsters.
Confused myself with force bolt (which I had forgotten), read a ?oGD and
dug my way to the portal with a WoDigging.
Arrived on Air. Changed my WW boots for Levitation (should've done
thaton Earth I guess). I got out another ?oGD and was just about to
again zap force bolt when an umber hulk decided to be so nice and do the
confusing for me. The portal was found and I made my way over there. Not
much problems on the way. The Staff was keeping me alive so well that
even Air Elementals couldn't harm me much. The only bother were the
forgotten healing spells, since Pistis Sophia's HP dropped to 140 of 224
and she apparently didn't get the time to heal herself...
Again I went through the portal before changing boots and arived on the
plane of Fire. I switched to the Boots of Lava walking, made sure no
burnables were outside the BoH, except for a ?oGD. This found the portal
very near to me, maybe 10 squares away or so. Went there, whistled for
the Archon and went into Water.
Switched boots again and levitated above the Water. Which is _very_
nice. A last ?oGD made the portal visible and I went in search for it.
Stayed out of the way of the ; and got to the portal rather quick. Went
on to the Astral Plane.
A guardian Angel appeared and I was wondering how long this one would
last. The arch-lich greeting me didn't do much except casting headache
and smashing force on me before he was dead. I noticed that some of the
monsters had beaten up Pistis Sophia some but since I had forgotten the
foo healing spells that wasn't possible. Well, next time I'll drag the
important spellbooks along with me, or wait with the Run until I've
forgotten all the important spells and can actually reset the forgetting
timer...
Well, I saw that Death was to the left, Pestilence in the middle and
Famine to the right. With 19 K-Rations and a "oSD and having appeared
near the right side anyway, I made my way there. Turned out to be
Poseidons temple. I cleared it from monsters, except a few ants and
beetles I had tamed with charm monster and thought about what to do next.
I had posted that to get even with the RNG for killing my pets and for
arch liches below Mine Town, I would ascend with both a tame Famine and
a tame Pestilence, so I decided I couldn't very much not do so now.
So, protected by a guardian Angel of Hermes and Pistis Sophia I set
about level draining Famine. In the middle of this some fire giants
appeared and handed me two boulders. Recalling the way one of the
tournaments top scores had racked up millions of points, I put the AoY
under one boulder and revived Famine with the other. I actually
remembered to cast Haste Self now and then and got Famine down to XL 0.
After a few failed charm monster spells I got hungry and wanted to eat a
zruty corpse, which I couldn't. The reason was I was still wearing the
+0 Levitation boots. So I switched to the +5 WW boots, ate a food ration
(there was some time between killing the zruty and realizing I was still
levitating and I didn't want to pass out from rotten food just then) and
went on regenerating my Pow. In the mean time Pestilence showed up and
sickened me rather a lot in the begining.
When I realized the haste self spell had expired and I recast it, it
wasn't such a big problem. And when I noticed I had been applying an
uncursed +2 unicorn horn and actually reblessed it, it wasn't too
difficult to survive any more. There I also quaffed two potions of gain
level I had been saving against level-drainage when the Staff would've
been stolen, which, tahnkfully, never happened.
I revived Pestilence (Death was still at the left most altar and decided
to stay there...), killed him (and Famine when ever he rose from the
dead) and repeated that until Pestilence was also at XL 0. Then revived
both of them until I had the opportunity to cast charm monster again and
again.
And lo! and behold! Pestilence was tame. I had checked previous post on
r.g.r.n with google about taming the two riders and it said they revive
hostile again when killed. Well at XL 0 the possibility of them dying
wasn't so small, so I locked Pestilence up with the high priest of
Poseidon and went to tame Famine with Pistis Sophia and the guardian
Angel of Hermes. A few tries later Famine was also tamed. Wow! I
thought, it actually works! So I locked up Famine with Pestilence and
Poseidons High Priest and went to the middle altar. I had some !oFH to
get over the HP drain from Death, but since he was still watiting at the
left altar, he never bothered me.
The middle altar was actually the right one. I decided I better clear
out the temple so that neither Famine nor Pestilence would get killed
there and I'd have to re-tame them. While doing so the evil RNG had a
trapper eat Pistis Sophia just one round before I could slay it. Which
made me _really_ sad. To get that far and then loose her at the altar...
Well, I uncursed my magic whistle (after wondering why none of the
Riders appeared when I blew it), got the two &s and the guardian Angel
next to me and sacrificed the Amulet to Hermes. (And I think he really
deserved it, he was being nice to me this game).
Well, so that's that. Radiance, Choir, Happiness. After this ascension I
don't think there's anything the RNG can throw at me anymore to stop me...

And that's that. Definately the most dramatic of my ascensions so far.
But I learned to take care of pets in the process. Gnomish Healers are
_not_ easy, but with patience, pets and perserverence it's possible to
ascend. :)
Next is a longish pause from playing (gotta do some university work),
then maybe a tourist or a rogue... Can't have it not to have ascended a
rogue in a roguelike game, can we now?

GP_Spukgestalt, gnomish Healer. "You displaced your invisible

Lucky you. I've twice had an archon pet and both times they got gulped
down after less than a thousand turns, i think.

I thought the pistis sophia was some sort of incarnated aspect of the
divinity, not an angel.

Geburah is (at least in the more traditional trees) the fifth Sephirah
and is something like the Divine Anger. My cursory readings on the
matter suggest it's basically doing the job of the christian devil but
is still considered one of the aspects of JHWH xxxself (unfortunately,
the english language _expects_ a pronoun and i'm utterly uncertain
which pronoun to use for the jewish god as represented by the
Kabbalah).
BTW, you can ride on a leocrotta (but you'd better have a few healing
spells for this purpose, they really have a hard time surviving in
Gehennom).

Try to equip your archon with a unicorn horn (dump an excess one on
the floor and force the angel to step over it until it's picked up and
equipped; all item-using monsters will do this). A confused pet will
not turn hostile, but at least in the 3.2.x versions it could cast its
spells on you. Ouch. I once got killed when my confused pet titan
summoned nasties at me.

Yes, re-learning is only possible once there's no more than 1000 turns
of use left. I occasionally pack one or two of the key spellbooks for
later relearning when i'm sure they're due to run out "soon, but not
soon enough".

Actually, i don't bother naming it - if it's not the real one, it can
be put into a container. To be doubly sure, i sometimes cast a spell
just to see whether i get the energy drain message.

For Archons, you just need a little breathing space - they regenerate
naturally.
Nice game, really. Ascending with Famine and Pestilence - wow! And
taming Pestilence is just about the most in-character thing a healer
can do. BTW, the two of them are _not_ in any serious danger of
getting killed by hostiles - being level zero, they will only
voluntarily attack (and suffer retribution from) level zero and level
one monsters. I think they'll refuse to fight anything more scary than
killer bees and garter snakes.
Congratulations!
It wasn't so difficult to identify purple worms and trappers and such
and get to them before they got to my companions. Especially with
teleport control from a tengu and teleportitis from a leprechaun. Until
the last possible time, when my concentration was slipping because I
thought I was already home free.

Well, I didn't find too many sources of information about it, so I just
used the oncesI found (and listed below).

Hmm, seems I have to read up on that... Two pages of internet
information is not even cursory reading...

Yeah, well, I didn't have a saddle and no wishes (hmm, I have this
terrible feeling of deja-vu ;). The good thing was it was carnivourse so
I could at least keep it fed for the brief time it was with me.

Well I usually name all my pets, because I find I take care of them more
when I named them then when they are just "Your large dog" or "Your
invisible Archon".
So I needed a name for the Archon. Well, first I had to find out what an
Archon is (other than an old Atari game). So after telling google that I
didn't want to know about that game, I actually found some information
on sites about gnosticism. Here
http://www.sarahsarchangels.com/archangels/queen.html
and here
http://azothgallery.com/gnosis_chronology.html
Well, there were also some names of holy beings which seemed fitting to
the pets I had at the time so I took those...
Probably doesn't make any sense, but it sounded fitting...

Yeah, well, when Pistis Sophia got confused (I didn't notice until I was
standing next to her), she suddenly hit me with Sunsword twice, then
gazed at and blinded me and cast a weakening spell at me. All in one
round, after which I moved away and decided that if she was having a bad
day, better let her get over it and go do something else. (Being at my
stash that wasn't exactly a problem).
Actually I had some spare unicorn horns and I recalled some posts about
people with tame Archons saying they gave them unicorn horns, so I tried
it, but she didn't want to pick it up so I thought she wouldn't need it
that badly anyway...
I know confusion doesn't untame pets, but after I found out what just
one round of being bashed by an Archon means, I was glad that during the
game she didn't become hostile at one point or another. Incidently I
don't even know wether there were any Archons on the Planes, or wether
they were all just peaceful...

Ok, lesson learned. Especially since the classes left to ascend are all
spellcasting classes more or less...

I just don't like the confusion that identifying The Amulet of Yendor
yields "The Amulet of Yendor". Of course I could've tried putting it in
a container and such, but still, naming it is easier and even MF proof.

Yes, but a little breathing space is hard to come by on Air. What with
all the monsters swarming in... Well, I got through Air and Fire fast
enough and on Water the monsters weren't so bad anymore and she healed
herself up nicely, just in time for Astral.
> Nice game, really. Ascending with Famine and Pestilence - wow! And

It's quite cool that Healers get a level-drainer as a quest artifact
making this possible. I guess chaotics could try for Stormbringer, but
what would a lawful character do?

Hmm, I hadn't considered that... Still, it was probably a good idea all
the same, there were quite a few stray magic missiles and lighting bolts
and such whizzing past me which could've toasted them...
> Congratulations!
Thanks, especially for the hint about casting Haste Self and choosing a
magic marker over speed boots. That helped much.

They are demonic shapeshifters

Does look good, doesn't it?
I wonder if you can name Pestilence and Famine after taming them.

Oh, I'm sure I'm going to die quite a number of YASDs in the future. But
that's not the RNG doing stuff. The only time it could be said the RNG
has won is unavoidable death. Like a Yeenoghu bones file for Dlvl 4...

Hmm, that's a good theory... Though Tina's theory about the Riders
playing their own nethack game and reappearing on Astral to try the
final test of slaying the pl@yer is also rather plausible :).

Don't taunt the RNG. After getting bored with several healers who
have died the assortment of mid-game deaths (drowned by an eel, stoned
by Medusa, drained by the Cyclops, shocked by a blue dragon,
disintegrated by a black dragon, surrounded by stuff summoned by a
nasty lich in VotD), I tried a tourist, who was finding decent stuff
until he came across a -5 shield of reflection. The RNG must hate me.
I kept it because I couldn't uncurse it (I assumed it couldn't
possibly be worse than -2). Tourists really stink to start out with,
just 10 HP, 10 AC, 2 PW, and only 2 !oEH. The magic mapping I like to
get to minetown, though.
I may have to try to ascend a healer still, though. The alignment is
a lot easier for the protection run, and the potions and pets mean
that I can get down to minetown pacifist 75% of the time, with about
10% being cornered by monsters and the rest deaths from trapdoors etc.
and being seperated from pets.
But all or most of those can be avoided (ok the black dragon maybe not
always and the Cyclops only if you have a WoDeath or something of that
sort). WoTeleport are _very_ good defense weapons. Though when the
liches started appearing I already had a tame Archon for company, so
that surely helped a lot...

Never yet seriously tried a tourist... I started two or three who never
made it past Dlvl 3... Since they can't manage pets as well as Healers
can, I suppose they're much harder to play... But it sure seems to be
possible to get places with Tourists as well...
> I may have to try to ascend a healer still, though. The alignment is

Yes, especially as gnomish Healers, cause the mines are then the
easiest, since only the non h or G monsters are hostile and there's very
much fewer of those.

Yeah, that's the #1 cause of death for my Healers that didn't make it.
Or the pets are all eating and I'm trying to run away from a soldier
ant... Which never worked.
