Personally I think Derek should have gone one step further; renamed purple
covetous archliches "master liches", renamed green uncovetous master
liches "demiliches", renamed demiliches "lichs", ditched the lowest rank
popcorn liches altogether. :-)

I could just take away all their spells except "summon nasties" and make
them skittish... ;) Though I'm inclined to make them skittish anyway once
more of the monster spells don't rely on melee range to be effective. There's
no reason a critter with grade 'A' ranged attacks should rush up next to
you just so it can get Cuisinarted.
(That, of course, still requires a lot more thought, since this sort of
thing can really shake up the game, possibly too much so.)

Small historical note: in pre-3.0 NetHack, leprechauns were L, leocrottas were
l, and liches did not exist. These NetHacks didn't have color, but if they did,
they might have had green L.
Furthermore, color first appeared in 3.0.4 (29 Sep 1989), and leprechauns
changed places with liches in 3.0.6 (22 Nov 1989). So mainline NetHack did
indeed have green L -- for all of 54 days in 1989.

For those who -- like me -- missed these days and never played the
very first Nethack version released, now you can:
After discussing whether Nethack or Perl was older on our local LUG
(Linux User Goup) -- don't ask why this question might be of any
importance, it really isn't -- and some researching (Nethack is in
fact older by about five months) we dug up the original sources from
an usenet archive.
Unfortunately the old sources can't be build on a modern system out of
the box, so I hacked them a bit up -- and now they compile and run on
a nowadays GNU/Linux system. :-)
So for all of you interested in time traveling, here is the tarball
with the modified sources:
