Yes, unless you have already discovered the stairway down, there must be
a secret door (probably even more than one) somewhere. Either at the
end of the corridors or also in the walls. Searching is done with the
's' command – best done multiple times, because you don't find
everything in just one turn. When I search a room, I usually start one
step from a corner with 'n10s' (search for 10 turns), then move on three
steps and repeat until I found what I seek. The command searches the 8
surrounding squares, so you usually affect 3 wall squares with a search
command. (You will find faster search options later on, but usually not
with the starting equipment only.) I.e.:

The kitten will heal by itself after a few turns, especially if you keep
it out of trouble when it has been wounded (e.g. by searching the
walls). Depending on what role you play, it may actually be tougher
than your character in the beginning (some people prefer to let the pet
do the fighting then). Also, it will grow stronger with time. If you
manage to find a stethoscope somewhere, you can easily check its health.

Thanks. Should have thought of trying 's' - Most of the other common
commands were intuitive. I should clarify that I'm new to Nethack, not
roguelikes. :)
Good to know the kitten heals. I don't know how tough it is; I do know
it wanders off and so far always comes back. It's an independent kitten,
which is pretty standard for felines.
Thanks. :)

Yeah, a kitten has a mind of its own… If you want to get a feeling for
their toughness, you can play a healer. They start with a stethoscope,
with which you can easily monitor its health (1 free usage per turn).

In a lot of games, your pet has many opportunities to die in the early
game.
One is attacks by monsters, and another is finding a trap (the cat, not
you). If you find them, your pet will typically avoid it. They can also
starve if left upstairs when you want to take a quick peek downstairs,
and if you leave them in a shop, the shopkeeper may kill them for
shoplifting. They seem to only get away with it when you are there
'helping'.
I think my kitten might be evil. It just killed a Hobbit.

...In that case, I'm in danger of being attacked.
Precise, correct and completely unhelpful. You must be a consultant! :)
There is a line in a Firesign Theater skit where he says something to
the effect of "let me orient you..." the certain way and inflection he
uses makes you smile. Your last remark made me think of that.
I think it was on the album
"Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me The Pliers"
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
Mouseturds, Mouseturds, Mouseturds!
Tee hee hee :-) Boo!
No; it's more that I don't read those.
*Zing!*
...Neither of them ship Hermione/Draco. Or Harry Potter/Severus Snape.
Or swapped combinations of either.

Shopkeepers don't mind pets (or monsters for that matter) making away with
the merchandise; pets only get killed by shopkeepers if they are foolish
enough (and *almost* high level enough) to attack them. They can easily get
killed by mimics, though.
