I first played nethack maybe... seven years ago? It was down in the
basement with my cousin visiting from Germany, on a shitty laptop
that I remember being quite impressed with. Our older cousin, a college
student, had provided us with the game, and impressed us with stories
about being all the way down to level TWENTY and finding some kind of
VAMPIRE.

I got back into nethack sometime late last semester, maybe three months
ago. When a server that a bunch of fellow computer science majors play on
updated to 3.4, I became obsessed with seeing my name in the top three,
and began playing nethack all the time. I wrote a program that rolled
characters for me to help me out. Eventually, my obsession turned to just
beating the game at all, so I started playing on my laptop to get rid of
the lag.

I started to hate the game. I just kept dying, over and over. I would
spend 10 or 20 hours on a promising character only to see it die -- a
single line on the top of the screen pronouncing my wasted efforts like it
was no big deal. Every time I died, I would feel stupid. I've read all
the spoilers. I've played this game for goddamn hours and hours. Why do
I keep making all these stupid mistakes? Why did I just attack that
priest?? Why did I eat that wraith corpse when satiated?? Why was I
standing on the cockatrice corpse when the dust vortex was approaching??
Am I some kind of goddamn retard?? I began to be embarrassed at how much
time I'd spent playing the game. Surely it doesn't take most people this
much time to win? What am I doing wrong? I played nethack so much that I
began to dream about it, and thought about it all during the day when I
wasn't playing. I played it almost all day, every day, for the past few
weeks before I beat it. I fantasized about the day when I could finally
make my YAFAP post and curse at all of you nethack players for being
hopeless fools, chained to this evil, horrible, mindless mockery of a
game, and swear to myself that I'm done with it forever.

But then I beat it, and it was sort of cool, and I mellowed out.

Anyway. My stat-roller gave me a wizard with a spellbook of identify and
intelligence of 20. Altar on level 2 gave me Magicbane. Sokoban gave me
a bag of holding. Found two magic markers and lots of cool scrolls laying
around. Fucked succubi to get to level 17 for teleport control, then ate
a leprecan. Quest was uneventful. Castle WoW (0:1) gave me gauntlets of
power, speed boots, helm of brilliance, and a ring of levitation. Got
Silver Dragon Scales from one of the castle dragons, and turned it into
Scale mail. Went back to mine town and killed the priest for his robe and
spellbooks. At about this point onward, nothing seemed to be able to do
any significant damage to me, and my natural HP regen seemed high enough
for me to not have to worry about it anyway. How exactly is HP regen
figured? And what's the formula for AC's reduction of chance-to-hit and
damage-caused? Gehennom went pretty fast with magic mapping and teleport.
After I found the vibrating square, I made some pots of full healing,
donated my gold, and was off. I only met the Wizard of Yendor at the two
times that were required, in his tower and on the plane of earth. Is this
unusual? Is it because I was blowing through gehennom so fast with
teleport? Earth was easy. Air was easy with ring of conflict. No one
seemed to ever attack me. Fire was easy with conflict and confused gold
detection to find the portal. Again, nothing attacked me. Water was easy
by virtue of me finding the portal randomly after not too many turns, but
how do people usually beat it? Just finding the portal randomly seems
like it might take a really fucking long time. The confused gold
detection just showed me the portal once, and that was it. Is there some
way to see the updated location of the portal each turn, without a zillion
?oGD or a crystal ball and scrolls of charging? Or would dropping a
single zorkmid on each square you stand on to see which ones you've
checked work? Anyway, as before, ring of conflict seemed to keep me from
ever being attacked.

On the Astral plane, I was shitting my pants. I took like a minute
between every single move I made, scared shitless that I would do
something wrong and die. The two angels that started off next to me took
an alarming number of turns to dispatch with just Magicbane, and I was
really scared that one of the riders would come after me and kill my ass
if I took too long. But they finally went down. I started on the left
side. Pestilence was left, Death middle. Pestilence is a much less
scarrier name than fucking DEATH, so I went left. Pestilence went down to
magic missile without even getting a hit off, even though he was right
next to me the whole time. Must've been the ring of conflict. The level
seemed like it would be 100 times harder without conflict. As it was, I
just slowly killed ants and weak priests and shit, making my way to the
altar with seemingly no one even trying to attack me. I never got to find
out what the special attacks of the riders do. Can someone tell me?

Left was the wrong altar, so I waded back through to try the middle. I
used the mass of Angels and priests as a barrier between me and Death, and
someone (not me) eventually killed him and his corpse was swarmed with
ants. Middle was the right altar. I stood on it for about five minutes,
just smiling to myself. I sacrificed. I ascended. Yay.

I dunno. I hate to waste a wish on something piddly like this. I bet you
found several more in Gehennom.

(I think I have this right) If your AC is negative, each time you are
attacked the calculation uses a random number between 0 and your
actual AC. But it ALSO reduces this amount of damage as well. So if you
have -40 AC, the average monster hit on you does 20 less damage. That's
why AC is so good.

You can see the portal if it's in the same bubble as you and there's
nothing on top of it, and you've previously detected it. Just wander
around a while and wait for it to come to you, and look out for items
lying around which might have the portal underneath.

Well, the insect summoning makes it a bit easier. Conflict or taming are
great for getting a low-HP character through.

> I never got to find

Famine: Lose nutrition. Get satiated on the Plane of water and he's a
pushover.
Death: Lose MAX HP. Could get really ugly. Also I think he does the
touch of death (no worry since you have magic resistance. I'd love to
see YAAP from someone who did the entire planes with no MR)
Pestilence: Sickens you. Causes quite a number of YASDs.

NOTE: Bubble Bobble doesn't work in this release. We are aware of that.
Use Bobble Bobble or Super Bobble Bobble instead, they work much better
than Bubble Bobble ever did.

Heh. I was on the plane of water with three blessed genocides left, so I

Yup. :P I guess I erroneously thought that I'd acquired poison
resistance at that point in the game. The post-mortem ID showed a
WoW(0:3) in my bag too, heh.

Okay, do most people curse like this on rgrn and I just didn't notice?

Hmm, wonder when we'll be seeing the snipping of this...

Was there any reason to drag this post out of the grave?

[snip hundreds of untrimmed lines from Thomas' YAFAP]

> Hmm, wonder when we'll be seeing the snipping of this...

A little verbosity in a FAP is excusable; you should have snipped them
yourself when following up. If you don't trim out unnecessary lines,
you make your post as objectionable as a top-post.

You know, I think that if I really wanted to look like a hackass, one
of the first things I would do would be to complain about the length of
someone's post WITHOUT EDITING OUT ANY OF THEIR ORIGINAL TEXT. But that
might just be me.
