I'm playing a wizard and started with a cat. I found a bunch of tripe
and a scroll of taming, and at present am on Dlvl 7 with two dogs, a
house cat, a large cat, and a white unicorn as pets. This retinue has
proved quite handy for the leprechaun hall on this level. I have some
bananas and there are some Ys not far away so I might have some more
groupies soon...

Questions:

(a) Do pets need to be adjacent to follow you downstairs? I know this
is true for one pet, but what if you have a whole zoo? Getting them
all around me before going downstairs might prove a bit of a
challenge. I haven't found a whistle or leash yet.

(b) Is there a way to suppress the "you displaced your housecat"
messages? They seem pointless. Yes, I'm moving and my cat moved out
of the way...so what?

(c) If a cat/dog/unicorn/ape eats a leprechaun corpse, do they get
teleportitis?

Hmmm...wondering if your pet unicorn will get teleportitis after
helping you dispatch leprechauns. I love this game.

Yes. It gets difficult with multiple pets. Be prepared to make
many trips up/down stairs.

There may or may not be, but the messages can be important...

No. As far as I know, pets don't get intrinsics.

Me too.

This limits how many pets are practical. At some point it's
time to pick some of the meaner ones and abandon others.

There's an easy way that you probably won't like - Zap
a wand of lightning. It might take a few tries. Firing
several daggers works, too.

It's part of the price of having pets. Let your first pet die
to hunger or abandonment and you don't have the problem.

Nope. Pets don't get intrinsics.

AFAIK you can't disable the messages except by turning safe_pet off, which
is Not A Good Idea if you want to keep your pets.

And can you really tame monkeys or apes with bananas? I must admit that
I've never even thought of trying.

Unicorns have teleportitis already.

I think you can only do this in Slash'Em (from what I've read; I've
only played vanilla myself).

And Spork. But not carnivorous apes, of course.

What you probably need to do is either choose the most valuable pets and
leave the others behind, OR take your pets up and down levels in several
batches: wait until some are next to you, then move down. Wait until
they have moved away on the next level, then go back up yourself. Wait
until some other pets are next to you, and go down again. Wait until no
pets are next to you, then move up again. Rinse and repeat.

A magic whistle is almost imperative here, and is also almost a
necessity when your moving on a dungeon level, since not all pets will
be able to keep up with you around corners...

There is no way to suppress this specific message. However, if you're
prepared to suppress several other messages as well, you could set the
"silent" option. This will suppress various messages considered "not
very important" by the Dev Team.

> (c) If a cat/dog/unicorn/ape eats a leprechaun corpse, do they get

Nope. Pets don't gain intrinsics other than by polymorphing into a
monster that has these intrinsics (and will of course lose these
intrinsics then they would assume yet another form).

Sorry...
