After all the whining I did about disintegrators, I decided to get one
on my side. Its now in the pantheon of best pets ever, and no doubt
causing quite a stir in the demigod bar.

I rolled some gnome wizards on un.nethack.nu with the goal of polytrap
dancing, so a magic whistle was paramount. Lots of shops, good
minetown and town square, early speed boots, but no magic whistle.
Two magic lamps, failed one and kept the other for light. Did Sokoban
for rings and food, and wised up about picking the guaranteed BoH.
Almost rerolled, but went down one more level, and found some bigroom
bones I left a while back. Decent loot, and my magic whistle! I went
back to minetown and uncursed everything, and set out with 3 pets in
tow. Found the polytrap one level above mines end. Loooooong time
later - no disintegrator, but had a vorpal jabberwock, an outstanding
pet in its own right. Two-hit kills on shopkeepers, one on everything
else. Found another friendly priest on DL11 and camped out with the
huge pile of loot and money from all the shops.

Got lucky with a graveyard and got to XL14 for the quest. The vorpal
jabberwock made short work of the Dork One, and I found another
polytrap. I had a ring of SD by now and settled in for some work. I
ended up with three tatzelworms - in this game the magic resistant
dragons. Was I going to have to wish for a figurine with the castle
wand? I put on conflict and let the dragons kill each other off so I
could get scales. Good cheap way to get magic dragon scale mail.

I explored the rest of the dungeon, looking for reflection. As it
turned out there were no reflecting dragons the whole game - I don't
know if thats one that was randomly left out. I ended up wearing a
AoR most of the time. Found the portal to One Eyed Sam's Black Market
and proceeded to rip him off. All you need is a teleport wand. Among
the loot was a wand of wishing! First time I've ever been glad to see
a 1:0. Wrested it for my blessed figurine of a disintegrator.

I gave it a wide berth at first. I could displace it without losing
my armor, and it never picks up or eats anything, so random stuff on
the floor is safe. Its slow, so a wand of speed monster is needed. I
genocided umber hulks (takes a blessed scroll for just one species
now) and felt ready to go. Its a level 27, so it will fight nearly
any monster, and with conflict on (careful with the spacing), it will
take out highr level demons. In one hit. Whistle it around and watch
everything vanish. Armor first then the monster. All the stuff falls
to the ground. Unlike you the player, monsters don't lose their
weapons trying to hit a disintegrator. Very effective on summoning
storms. Only things I was afraid of were death rays and poly/levtel
traps, so I kept it close and wore a searching ring. They do take
damage from zaps, and any healing potions you throw at them just
disintegrate, so you have to spell-heal them from time to time.

I thought about trying it out on Rodney, but wasn't comfortable
dancing around with a conflicted disintegrator and the Wizard in a
small space. Same for Cthulhu. Warning, when you kill Cthulhu, his
body vaporizes into poison gas and kills the Sanctum priest. Who is
peaceful, which makes you a murderer (I had to rev-geno floating eyes
to get my telepathy back). There's no way around this except to
teleport the peaceful away and get the Amulet from Cthulhu. And he
resurrects early and often, teporting next to you, stun-gazing and
brain-sucking. Theres absolutely no time for junk-sorting and altar-
testing. Just ride that cursed potion of gain level outa there.

I used the castle wand for another disintegrator, and unleashed it on
Earth - wish I'd waited for Astral. Confused gold detection doesn't
work for finding traps anymore, so I was wandering around a lot
zapping wands of SSD and casting detect unseen. I lost my new one on
when I hit the portal in air without seeing it. Regardless, these are
champions of the planes - tough elementals, priests, angels go down
quick. I got to Astral with my original disintegrator! Had to do the
grand tour, and now there is no way to tell what a Rider is until you
are right next to it. Just death-zap em and use a backup on Death. I
couldn't get my disintegrator to take on a Rider, even with conflict -
but I wasn't sitting still long enough to finesse it. Jump jump
jump. Zap zap zap. It cleared a good enough path for me to ascend
with it. Not as high level as an Archon or Solar (Slashem), but a lot
more fun.

Why did you genocide umber hulks? Are the UN NH umber hulks different
from Vanilla? In Gehennom (in Vanilla) I find them very convenient,
whether they are tame, peaceful, or hostile; they open paths for you.

How about unicorn horns? Can't those disintegrators pick/use them?
I always give a unicorn horn to my pet when I need a very high level
one, like an Archon.
I assume using an expensive camera to blind the humber hulks is not
efficient enough, since it can cure blindness with !oH.

It walked over several unihorns without picking them up. In fact it
didn't pick anything up at all. More like a Slashem minion. I don't
know if that means its not intelligent, or its cause it would
disintegrate anything it touches.

I wasn't going to mess around first time. But its a good question.
I'd like to see it in wizmode.

Who would have thought that I forgot to consider that simple case. :)

Oh, an inconsistency. Added to the TODO list.

I didn't know about the disintegrated potions. Nice. :-)

That's the vanilla bug of stinking clouds.

You killed Cthulhu from outside the chamber. If you had entered it,
the priest would have gotten hostile like in vanilla. Just as an
explanation, it is of course a bug.

Rodney lost the Amulet in 3.1.0 to the high priest of Moloch even
though the high priest wasn't that much harder. The sanctum added to
the difficulty but not the bearer of the Amulet.

Cthulhu is obviously not the God of the same name, otherwise you
wouldn't stand a chance, but some kind of pet of Moloch. Moloch likes
interesting pets. :-)

A crystal orb still works.

That's one of the early changes I haven't improved yet.

I want the rider to be indistinguishable by telepathy but
distinguishable by light. As soon as you can see them you know who
they are.

Right now only "indistinguishable by telepathy" part is implemented.

I just applied successfuly the same technic. (and almost died, as
forgetting to put on free action, and get a paralysis phial crash from a
soldier...).
BTW, just wished for a blessed figuring of a disintegrator from the 1:0
castle wand, and going now for gehennom...
Cheers.

Yes, that's why polymorphing into a Xorn doesn't work. :-)

You know, shop thieves are reported in real time in #unnethack. :-D

[09:17] <demogorgon> *** ctaboir stole 2355023 zorkmids worth of merchandise
from One-eyed Sam's black market after 26475 turns.

Using teleporting Sam for robbing will be a bit less effective in
future versions.

I don't know if I should do something special about the Eye of the
Aethiopica.

> BTW, just wished for a blessed figuring of a disintegrator from the 1:0

And wishes are also reported. :)
