This might be a stupid question, but do katanas count for dipping for
excalibur, or only actual longswords?

Katanas are actually masterwork bastard swords. Not to derail the
topic I suggest a katana should be a 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to
hit and damage Counts as Masterwork when wielded one-handed and 2d10
Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork when
used two-handed.

Katanas are what you get when you've only got crappy steel. If you've got
decent steel you don't have to mess about like that, and you can design a
weapon for cutting as well as slashing without it wanting to break on you
all the time.

The idea that all katana are masterwork is absurd.

I cannot convey my level of disinterest in your desire to give utterly
munchkin stats to some weapon you have a hard-on for in some game that
isn't NetHack.

Katana is in the long sword skill school so it isn't a stupid question.
Artifacts go by exact type not school, though. Only actual long swords.
