Also in retrospect I realized that I didn't spend anywhere near enough
time training invocation. Chance of 'haste' was Bad. Not that it
would've helped much here, I suspect. The stairs were surrounded by
dragons and big hydras. I think I will try this combo again, in the
swamp it was ever so much fun :-D

Anyway, that's not what this post is all about. Okawaru presented her
with a demon trident of venom. I spent a few scrolls on it so it was
like +2+3 by the time I got to Swamp 5 (after finishing up with Lair and
Orc).
Whenever that trident was equipped, it showed up in RED. Why would that
be, one wonders? I could see TSO not liking a demon weapon ... but
Okawaru doesn't seem to care 'bout that kind of trifle !?!
Also, I have a sneaky suspicion that the thing increases hunger.
Sometimes no need to eat for a whole level, other times eat, eat, eat.
I was also using a vanilla trident for lesser monsters to keep training
enchanting, as it were ... the demon trident seemed to cause more hunger
than the spellcasting though. I haven't been able to dig up any info on
that though.
Any comments?
As an aside, Okawaru must be related to Xom. Why else would he drop
something like a -5 robe rF on me or, right at the end, a 'glowing hand
axe'. Yepp, my Merfolk Crusador with 17 Polearms skill is going to train
up axes for that measly p.o.s.? I don't think so! That's not a gift
worthy of a God observant of their followers. What A Clown.

Since there were hydras waiting for you at the bottom of that stair, you
should have gone down a different stair.

Don't bother with Invocations. As a Crusader, you should be using
Enchanments and casting Haste from a book.

Nice find. Demon tridents are awesome.

Demon tridents are red, the color of hellfire. Yes, there are a few places
left in DCSS where items are colored purely for flavor; this is one of them.

A demon trident of venom does not increase hunger while wielded, sorry.
You'll need to search for an alternate explanation.

This is not an original observation.

That's what I concluded. Yupp. Next time ... lesson LEARNED.

still too hard for her at that level, although I had a ring of wizardry
and a staff of [enchanting][enchantment] and between those I could get
the spell cast - immediately annihilating my food status, mind. I'd been
trying to train up enchanting and spellcasting at every opportunity when
there was xp in the pool. Didn't quite get there, as it were.
I'll take your advice and not bother with invocations next time either.

Great, thanks for clearing that up for me :) Now I don't have to worry
about that any more (if I should ever get to see another of those
things).
regds, -P.
When I play MfCr I spend almost all exp from the pool on training
spellcasting/enchantments in levels 2-8. Midway through level 10, I'll
get spellcasting up to level 5, and can then learn Haste and have it
at "Fair". If you can't cast it reliably at XL 14, then either you're
really not pushing spellcasting or there must be something else going
on... you are wearing light armour and choosing INT for all stat
upgrades, right?

Generally if you choose Okawaru as a Crusader, the whole point is to
try to get gifts, so wasting piety on Invocations is counter-
productive. But with other gods (Makhleb!) it's a useful skill.
If you decide to abandon Oka in favour of a better late-game god
(commonly TSO), that's when you burn all your piety on training
Invocations before abandoning.

The only things that should cause hunger on equip are things that
speed up your healing (or randarts with Hunger+).
But if you aren't sure, you can always test it for yourself if you
have some small food items you don't mind wasting. Wait until you get
hungry, press E and record the turn count, eat a choko or strawberry,
rest until hungry, record the turn count again. Now unequip whatever
you think is causing hunger, eat another of the same food item, rest
until hungry for a third time and record the turn count. Then compare
numbers.
Er ... I was putting most into dex actually. Right, point noted :-)

...[nods] - yes, I should/could have tested that. Doh!
Going to try again, now
eventually I will make more sense of it all ... -P.
