I recently had an annoying death:

I found a necklace. I learned from earlier games those could be a evil
necklace of strangulation, so my plan was to just soak it with holy
water. I put the necklace in front of a wall, threw the holy water
bottle, it smashed on the wall and the text said like "the necklace is
soaked with water". Alright I thought, picked the necklace up, equipped
it around my neck but... it was still evil and it *was* a necklace of
strangulation.

Is the throw-smash-soak procedure not a proper way of making things
holy? Bug or feature? Would simple dipping have worked?

The throw-smash-soak method is disallowed for one very major reason:
You'd otherwise be able to bless every single item in your inventory
by simply dumping them in a stack on the ground, then throwing a
bottle on top of them. You could also fill several bottles with one
bottle's worth of liquid like that. If you dip an item, however, the -
entire- contents of the bottle go into blessing/setting on fire/
dissolving/whatnot the single item. (Though it is worth noting that a
stack of identical items, like arrows, will all be affected at the
same time.)

This even applies to a stack of normal bottles of water, meaning as
long as you have one bottle of holy water you can make more by
yourself.
