I delved into the Orcish Mines, and found the Elven Halls. I guess my
kit is such that it isn't terribly difficult. I just have to know
when to run and heal up. But, I got banished to the Abyss. My first
time ever there where I expect to survive at least for a little
while. :)
Anyway, the game said I need to find my way out. I'm not asking for
explicit spoilers, but just what to expect in trying to find my way
out. I've already been surrounded by a bunch of "numbers" and
survived, but I don't expect that will happen many more times.
Thanks,
Will

There are no monsters in sight!
Only thing: it is a cyclic level, so don't go straight up (or down, or
right, or left) but angle slightly. Your ring of Ice is a problem
since it gives you fragility with respect to fire, but resistance
with respect to poison and +5EV --
Fire-loving demons are much more common there than Poison ones --
Well, you'll get ice-fiends also where you'll need cold resistance --
Numbers 1 are tough enough.
The usual advice is: don't fight, just trudge on. When blocked,
fight if the enemies are small enough, else teleport (it'll create
a new level).
You're likely to make it:)
Oh, by the way, you can get rid of your shield, it is only a
piece of rotted garbage that hampers your moves!
Cheers! O.
> Oh, by the way, you can get rid of your shield, it is only a

It's still providing blocking.
YATIDNK: Yet another thing I didn't know:p
Cheers, O.
Thanks for the info.
Oh, and yes, the shield had blocked for me several times already and
saved me from being poisoned by darts before I found this ring.
Thanks again,
Will

Sometimes you will teleport within the same level. This is IME more
likely if the level has an arch-lich or something nasty(or maybe it is
just more memorable).

I did not think a shield hampered moves, only combat. And since you
should be running and not really "combating", you should keep it on.
The abyss is a tough place. 200 hp can go really fast, oh wait, you
only have 116 ...
You may survive but really Okawaru's haste and your ability to
teleport are your best/only assets.

Your scrolls will steadily disappear in abyss without an amulet of
conservation. Go ahead and use the scrolls of teleportation before
they get burned. Then you can use your wand of teleportation.

Take off the ring of ice. Fire is common in the abyss and you will
see cold or poison coming.

Too bad you are carrying your cure mutation potion. Those are rare
and it is sad to lose it to a white imp's blast. Keep the rest of
your potions and maybe those will get frozen instead.
Keep running! If you see an L or a 1 then run faster!

Thanks everyone, especially this comment, for the advice. Just before
I saw this comment I would fight. I removed my ring, and kept running
and within a few minutes found the gate out. Thanks. :) I feel like
I'm becoming a better Crawler :)

That is awesome. What does the gate out look like? I'm serious - my current
(and best) char has been running for thousands of turns, and I can't help
feeling I must have walked right past it. Can you describe it? Is it like an
upside-down capital U? Is it a solid square, about half the size of a wall
square but off-centre? Something else?
Thanks,
CC
I too wanted to know this after perishing severally in the Abyss. So I
just started some throw-away characters:Mi-chaosknight of Lugonu,
staring in the abyss. and then run a spiral around the starting point.
You'll see one quickly. It's a sort of pebbled archway with a yellowish
emblem (4 pointed star) in the centre the way the tiles version presents
it on my screen. The altars of Lugonu look more like a gravestone with a
jagged hole in the centre.
When my most promising character was zot-trap-banished to the abyss I
found a Lugonu altar, but because it was described as "corrupted", I
passed it by, thinking it had been decomissioned by some of the
inhabitants (the jagged hole appearance reinforced that impression).
Missed my chance to get out, and died shortly after. I am amazed that
you managed to survive for thousands of turns ... my visits to the abyss
have always been brief and painful.
-P.
Does anyone know the ASCII equivalents? I've never seen anything like either
of those described, but then I don't play with tiles so it's not surprising.
I was under the impression is that the exit gate is the same character as
used for the gate to Pan which are found in the main dungeon - but I haven't
seen one of those, so maybe I have missed the real thing while I was
looking. I've not been looking too hard for altars because I don't really
want to leave Trog (I have max piety), but I don't think I've seen one of
those either (I'm assuming they look like they do in the temple).

I'm a MiBe with a ton of armour and hp, and I've used all my escapes when
I've been cornered, and all my healing/curing when my hp have dropped too
low. I don't think I'll survive much longer.

Whatever glyph is used for portals in your charset. Portals meaning
shops, bazaars, portal vaults (e.g., sewer), and gates to
Hell/Pan/Abyss/Zot. It may be an inverted U, or a backslash. Altars do
look the same as they do in the temple, and all you're going to find is
Lugonu.
And no, given your condition, you really don't want to ditch Trog. He
doesn't take breakups well at all.
In ASCII Windows it is an inverted U like a shop, but multicolored.
It changes colors every turn.
Will
Strictly speaking, there are no inverted Us in ASCII :-)
I definitely haven't missed an inverted U, but I'm now wondering if I've
missed a backslash ... (I play on CAO via ssh so only the most basic xterm).
