presumably a bug reflecting my partial win. Indeed, the "Player info" page
says "Partial wins: 0" - the same bug?
This was a close-run thing. I was nearly out of health, phase devices,
armour, and shotgun shells. In a way the last may have been a blessing
because I decided to go on a stairs charge from about level 21, and I
suspect once I was in 'vile territory I was risking a death for no
particular gain in resources. I fought one archvile in a Hellish City, but
ran into another one a few levels below - I blasted him to bits only to
find his archvile buddies waiting behind, and at that point discretion
seemed the better part of valour and I hit the homing phase device.
In those late fleeting levels I also traversed a couple by Computer Map,
at once point opening a door to an armour shard to discover a Pain
Elemental on top of it, hiding behind a barrel. At that point I tipped my
hat, said "Terribly sorry, I mistook you for someone else", closed the
door, and let the armour shard go. I also lucked out in that the final
staircase was two spaces from where I entered the level.

DoomRL (v.0.9.9) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------
David, level 9 Former Human Lance Corporal, defeated the Cyberdemon
on level 25 of the Phobos base.
He survived 104056 turns and scored 79583 points.
He played for 2 hours, 34 minutes and 35 seconds.
He didn't like it too rough.
He killed 432 out of 510 hellspawn. (84%)
This low figure obviously reflects my unwillingness to fight on later
levels.
He was an Angel of Shotgunnery!
He saved himself once.

[a] [ Armor ] nothing
It had just been blown off by Cybie. Is his melee attack weaker? It's
still pretty fearsome.

[c] [ Boots ] Phaseshift Boots [4/4] (100%)
[d] [ Prepared ] advanced combat shotgun (9d3) [4/5] (P2T1)
These two shotguns were my mainstay for most of the game. Why a bulk mod
in the double? That's what I had. I employed two basic tactics; knockback
people out of sight with the advanced combat shotgun and reload it as they
lumbered back into view (which doesn't always work on arachnotrons, but
nothing does), or coax people to step through a doorway one at a time into
the teeth of the double shotgun. With Army of the Dead both shotguns were
exceptionally effective.
I mostly got use out of the Shottyman reload when facing packs of
pinkbeasts or lost souls, but also when caught at medium range or against
a wall, to close the range while dodging.
I didn't see any of the unique shotguns, but you never get the things you
really want, and the plasma shotgun would have presented a headscratcher
after throwing away cells all game.
Also, of course, Invulnerability Globes work nicely with the double
shotgun. "Surprise! Death-o-gram!"

He started his journey on the surface of Phobos.
On level 3 he entered Hell's Arena.
He left the Arena as a champion!
On level 4 he stormed the Chained Court.
On level 10 he found the Railgun!
And said an extremely rude word.
On level 14 he found the Phaseshift Boots!
On level 14 he ventured into the Halls of Carnage.
And went all the way to the BFG9000. But I figured with the number of
sergeants there and the three supercharges, if I did it with junk armour
on, it was basically free XP.
On level 18 he found the Malek's Armor!
On level 19 he entered the Vaults.
He came, he saw, but he left.
This was not just a badgehunting side trip; I had surrounded the regular
stairs on the level before with lava.
I also saw the entrance to The Wall and the Unholy Cathedral but neither
was convenient to reach.
Then at last he found Phobos Arena!
On level 25 he finally defeated the Cyberdemon.

Yes, that's strange. Probably worth shooting Kornel a mail if it isn't
mentioned on forums.

Thanks to decisions like those I've managed to complete few wins too.
> He was an Angel of Shotgunnery!
Nice! I didn't manage to win that one yet. Playing constantly on UV
does not help.
> Army of the Dead (Level 1)
Does this trait significantly increase damage output? It seems to me it
is not worth picking.
> I didn't see any of the unique shotguns, but you never get the things you

Yeah, both times when I found plasma shotgun my marines needed cells for
something else.
> [g] thermonuclear bomb

Yes, works like expected. If you blow Cybie with it and die at the same
time it is counted as partial win and completed challenge game.

These are really tough to take down with shotguns. You have my respect.

>

Ouch! That hurts.
> On level 14 he ventured into the Halls of Carnage.
If only for ammo and supercharge it is worth to visit this place as AoS.
Have you found City of Skulls? I managed to clear it with a single
homing phase device and couple of shells as shotgun marine. Had juggler
trait though.
Congratulations!

Doesn't he still read rgr.*?
>>He was an Angel of Shotgunnery!
>Nice! I didn't manage to win that one yet. Playing constantly on UV

Call me a wuss, but I'm going to clear up all the Angel Of... on the
lowest difficulty possible. Er, which leads me to notice that the Subject
line says HMP but this was on HNTR. Ooops. I think that's because I
started playing Doom on HNTR and think of HMP as the "second" difficulty.
>> Army of the Dead (Level 1)
>Does this trait significantly increase damage output? It seems to me it

The wiki suggests it does against high-armour enemies. It's difficult to
test, but the double shotgun did do considerable execution.
>Yes, works like expected. If you blow Cybie with it and die at the same

I think of nuking Simon the Cyberdemon as the pyhrric victory.
>> -- Kills -----------------------------------------------------
>> 11 arachnotrons

>These are really tough to take down with shotguns. You have my respect.
I had good luck with invulnerabilities, and reasonably good judgement
about when to use them. Beyond that, the arachnotrons mostly turned up
in an arena; I phased away and used knockback to keep them out of range.
The archvile was a banzai charge with the double shotgun and, as
mentioned, when another 'vile turned up behind him, I decided to phase out
of there. The mancubi and revenants were mostly tackled by point-blank
blasts around corners.
>Have you found City of Skulls? I managed to clear it with a single
>homing phase device and couple of shells as shotgun marine. Had juggler

Never. I suspect the modded double shotgun would have made short work of
it, though.

If we aren't perfectly synchronised this corncob will explode!
Today is Second Brieday, December.
Tomorrow will be Second Gouday, December.
I doubt it. He concentrated most of his playerbase on chaosforge forums.
Last time I remember him posting other than to rgr.ann is when he asked
about line of fire algorithms for DoomRL.
About bug itself:
I have read up this on forums and discovered Kornel did this on purpose.
The idea is either you kill JC and are "full" winner or you die to JC and
you are plain dead marine (Cybie kill ignored). People have expressed their
doubts about this mechanic so probably it will be gone in next version.

Not a bad idea. I am long time DoomRL player and before player data
compatibility break my rank was general or so. Moreover win rate on UV
is roughly what I am used to in crawl or adom.

I appreciate that the failed full win is so described - I'm just saying
the player info screen is mangled.
